Victor’s £1m a light amid utter insanity

1847

You want some good news? Around £1m of Tottenham’s money for Victor Wanyama will find its way to Celtic, which will offset some of the economic impact of this morning’s news. This aside, there is only bad news. If we want to buy footballers priced in euros (or anything other than GPB) they will cost more money. We will also have to pay higher wages to be competitive with European clubs.

Goods will cost more – it will start today with fuel and travel, then food, electrical goods and everything else. Wages will buy less (not just less-able footballers). Borrowing repayments will be higher. Business expenditure, wages and employment will drop, so will the tax take – and money available for welfare spend.  The poor always pay the highest penalty.

If you are rich enough and without a mortgage you can indulge in flag waving all day, happy in a delusion that self-determination even remotely exists in modern economies. Or that more self-determination over here, and a little less over there, is a panacea. It’s not, it’s just another economic crisis coming your way soon.

The entire political class have failed us. Calling a flag waving referendum was a grubby attempt to hold onto power by the prime minister; this mess is his making. Whoever succeeds him will have to successfully pander to the same party membership in order to get elected.

Jeremy Corbyn’s mealie-mouthed campaigning was an embarrassment. His “7 out of 10” backing for remain did what it was supposed to do: convince people he was going through the motions for something he didn’t believe in.

Who’s ever heard of a leader winning support for an issue he is prepared to back 7 out of 10 himself? He should go, but political ego will ensure he’ll hang around to make sure Johnson wins the next general election.

It took six days for the Greek government to abandon their own disastrous EU referendum mandate. Instead of attempting a rescue, all our political ‘leaders’ will give us is more populist power grabs. It’s already underway.

You have to distinguish between renegotiated terms of membership and terms for the UK doing business with the EU post Brexit.

I think there’s more scope for latitude with the former than the latter.

  2. Very arrogant Paul. Almost Sevconian in tone. Paul knows best. You seem to agree with Democracy when it suits you. You are an Uber Blairite. Bad judgement with your opinion piece.

On hearing the bad news that Syria & Iran are not part of the EU an Ultra Nationalist, while having a smoke outside a Bristol pub, demanded a referendum so that the British people could vote to leave the Mid-East Union.

  5. Cameron has given the Tories some breathing space and Parliament a bit of manoeuvrability by staying on for three months. In that time there will be a clearer picture of how the markets, pound and economy are performing. If it looks like things are going down the pan look out for a bit of back tracking. Article 50 will not be invoked until there is a new person in number 10 at the earliest, though the European heid bummers want it invoked ASAP.

Jeremy Corbyn was also intimating that article 50 should be invoked immediately.

    From the Torygraph:

“By contrast, the official Out campaign has said there is no need to trigger Article 50 until informal negotiations have taken place – potentially lasting years.”

    This could get interesting.

I am also in BA lounge ( first class ) as the business one was mobbed and the Glasgow flight is delayed until 17.55pm

Surprised Paul67 by the politics/economics—-it’s not how it will pan out. The most important number is the £10Bn net UK to be absorbed by the others. Only Germany has the balance sheet to absorb. Berlin will say Nein. The fame has just started. Sterling will recover and euro will weaken significantly. That will be the dynamic which drives the agenda going forward.

    How is Pedro doing ??

Claimed hundreds of thousand of pounds in dubious expenses, one of the first to access the John Lewis list. Fond of alcohol, which has contributed to him participating in embarrassing incidents. Laughingly claims to be a Socialist but has a similar lifestyle to the wasters in the House Of Lords( which in his younger days he wanted to abolish), the phrase drunk as a Lord, could have been penned for him.’

  9. Lucky Cody I’m also in the First Class lounge. In the corner past the food turning left as you come in)

I take it that those Brexit fine fellows who have been mouthing off about democracy will be seeking to alter a system where someone can sit in parliament with a third of their constituents votes.

    That will be the day.

  11. Am in my lounge at home. Guess that politicians and Eurocrats will sort it over many years. We will still be in the EU for many years.

Well, apart from the small matter of the £15b deficit, the collapse in the price of oil etc etc.

Yep. It is never over until the fat lady sings.

Who knows? Maybe the willie Rennies and Ruth Davidsons of the world might just be revising their thinking on second referendums.

  18. QUONNO on 24TH JUNE 2016 4:44 PM

The fall in the price of oil would have a larger effect on the Scottish economy than it would on the UK economy because oil forms a larger percentage of the economy, Scotland having a smaller economy than the UK.

If things pan out the way you wish what sort of border do you think there will be between Scotland and England?

  19. No harm at all in bumping our gums re the Politics but no point in getting too het up either, what will be, will be.

Our first game is 6 days away, the game itself will be just a fitness exercise and will be of no importance whatever. Yet I’m really looking forward to it.

  20. Wonderful news re: KT signing up.

Very much hoping he’ll be here for at least 3-years. Either way, all those interested in acquiring his talents should now expect to pay a hefty fee.

Also: on the sub-topic of getting Irish citizenship through grandparents… I’ve just clocked the current, eye watering fees.

Anyone know when they became so dear ?

I got citizenship about 10 years ago and seem to recall that it cost me a modest £85 …

that with so much thinking going on iro dealing with the UEFA letter I/we never got around to thanking all those who supported the legal route Res12 had to embark on to meet the latest legal bill.

My personal thanks (but Im sure I speak for the others) to WC for all the hard work he put into to make an idea a reality and of course to everyone who bought the T Shirt.

It would be some legacy of Res12 if an unforeseen consequence were the creation of a legal mechanism that would make football much more accountable.

Please read the link, think about it and ask the CST/CSA to at least consider in conjunction with other trusts/associations if they would support the creation of a legal challenge model.

  23. Robinbhoy,

Good to catch up from the Berlin days— say hello to your brother for me.
