Victor’s contract offer, Charlotte and Willie

663

I hear from good sources at Celtic Park that despite Victor Wanyama declining to sign a contract extension since October last year, the player is an absolute joy to deal with.  His professionalism is well rooted; there have been no “rolled out of the pub” emails about this guy, nor is there likely to be.

There are usually reasons why a player with the best part of three years left on his contract (as it was) declines a one year extension for dramatically better wages (Victor is on an entry level contract and was offered a top pay deal).  We now know discussions were taking place for a proposed move to QPR last summer.

According to Victor’s agent, Celtic blocked the proposed move, costing the player £1m in wages.  It could be argued that advising Victor to decline Celtic’s new contract offer also cost Victor a substantial sum.

Herein lies the problem.  QPR were paying the kind of money that would make Louis XVI wince.  Staggering sums were paid to players, well beyond their value.  Despite this, those very same players are now readjusting to life as lower-division players.

The irony has escaped Vic’s agent, but the contract value proposed to the player during QPR’s pre-guillotine era made declining Celtic’s offer almost a year ago look like a good idea.  The contract offered by saner-Southampton clearly pales by comparison, which will make the decision to sit on entry-level wages at Celtic for nine months look ridiculous.  Of course people are getting irritated, there are questions to answer about the advice given.

My guess is that the agent needs to pull a big contract offer out of the bag.  Victor is a special talent but Louis XVI-type offers don’t always come along in twos.  If Victor goes, it will be to a club matching Celtic’s valuation and the money will come in handy.  If he stays, Celtic expect to retain their top player for another two years.  No one, and I mean no one, is distressed at this prospect, after all, Celtic sell when they choose to, not because they have to.

So the Daily Record have (for the second time, in case you’ve not been paying attention) dipped their toes into Charlotte waters.  Items “leaked on to the internet, where they are openly available” have been used, without reference to source, and without concern for apparent legal consequence.

As far as I am aware, none of the owners of the material leaked have disputed their authenticity or declined permission for it to be used.  Our media are a huge part of this story, they feature in galling terms in many of the leaked documents.  The cry of legal probity was convenient, but has twice been shown to be nonsense by the Daily Record (who have been highly selective on who to target).

It is a huge story.
There are months of material waiting to be written about.
The Daily Record are doing what many said cannot be done, without consequence.

But, this one does not fit popular narrative, and is likely to cause the kind of schism Mme Guillotine did in 18th century France.  Seek Truth, as someone once said.

Willie Wallace………… what can we say?

Willie came onto CQN last night before leaving for Australia today.  This is a taste of what he said:

“I just wanted to come back onto CQN this evening to say my farewells as myself and Olive head back to Australia tomorrow.  I would like to offer my heartfelt thanks to all the Celtic supporters I have met during the past month, at book signing events, in supporters clubs such as Greenock and at the CQN Golf Day.

“Also to everyone at the Lions Roar event last Friday where Bertie stole the show as usual! I came all the way from Australia and I couldn’t get a word in! The 1254125 charity tells you everything you need to know about Celtic supporters.

What is amazing about this Celtic family of ours is that when you live at the other side of the world you still know that this is a special club with wonderful supporters. Then you come back to Scotland and realise you actually under estimated these things because Celtic is even better than you remember and the fans are truly amazing. The best in the world.

“To everyone on CQN can I say a very special thank you. I hoped that the book would go well and we’d sell a few copies but it was never about money – it was about telling my story. I arrived at Winning Captains house and was met by a mountain of books to sign – all ordered by the CQNers. I had to go back another day to finish signing and the mountain was as big as before! I’ve been avoiding him ever since!

To Brogan Rogan Trevino and Hogan – when I heard his name I thought that would be some round of drinks! He’s been great, helping make Heart of a Lion what it is – a really good Celtic book – and turning up at the CQN events and book signings.

“Thank you the CQN’ers.

“Thanks to the Celtic family and I look forward to our next trip home to Paradise.

“Hail Hail and all the best to each of you and your families.

“Willie Wallace

“Keep the Faith!

“Hail Hail!”

Willie, it has been an utter joy.  Thank you.

Heart of a Lion:

Hope all goes well with scan next friday, keep us all updated on your progress. Off to Portugal today for a few weeks, will keep lurking for your posts. All the best, keep on fighting. Hx2

  2. Good luck Tom Mc. I had my prostate removed in Feb, after extensive investigations. The only thing I would say is that -once you get the results – you should ask as many questions about the next steps as you can – what are the alternatives, etc. Hopefully you won’t need to go to that stage. Fingers crossed.

    Morning all,

I don’t suppose anyone remembers a Scottish ref (don’t remember which one – they’re all pretty much the same!) going on Sportsound the day after the Juventus game when they were discussing the Juve defending “tactics”.

Anyway, he said the ref was correct NOT to award any penalties as the corners had not been taken.

However, in last night’s game the ref awarded the penalty even although the corner had NOT been taken. I know this for certain as I started recording the game as I had been watching the Federer game to an end. I hit the pause button and the ref had blown his whistle for the corner to be taken, but the kick had not actually been taken when the ref blew again for the penalty.

So was Platini’s old boys getting a wee favour? Was our good old Scottish ref wrong. Or maybe just another honest mistake….?

  4. Tom McLaughlin,

Hope all goes well with the scans and that the prognosis is good.

    Morning CQN.

Celtic say we operate a buy low sell high policy now. They freely admit this, so, Vic has to go. Will his stock ever be as high again? Possibly, but for sure, if we are eliminated from the CL in the qualifiers, it’s more likely to decrease dramatically. No European stage to strut his stuff to potential buyers? Massive gamble. A bird in the hand and all of that….

If we are eliminated, (God forbid) his sale for £12m would soften the financial blow dramatically.

Of course he could stay, but do you really think the board will want to take that chance? Buying for £900k and selling for £12m is a remarkable piece of business, and does not happen too often, so I for one don’t expect Celtic to miss out on such an opportunity.

Vic’s good, but he’s no Lubo, (in respect of what he adds to the team) and £12m is a huge sum relative to the financial market we operate.

For Vic’s own sake, I would have thought Southampton was not a great move, so pleased he’s not gone there. Everton? Perhaps. Arsenal if they’re interested? I believe he’d be a great addition adding a bit of bite and drive to that midfield.

  7. Morning Celts

I would just like to say….

canamalar1 – I wish you the best of luck with yer campaign M8

I’m not a shareholder – used to be a SB holder but gave it to my bro when I took the huff wi the Cellic when MO’N left. That aside – if I was a shareholder I would be right behind you my amigo.

But – I think that the only way that the bored will grow a pair is if – the Celtic support en-masse announced to the bored that – we no longer believe in you as guardians of the club we all love so much and – as a result of this lack of belief – we’re with-holding SB / Merchandise and all other coffers that are filled by the support until – the bored are GONE En-masse !!!!

Your efforts are to be applauded to the hilt and you must be respected for trying to go through the proper channels which is the correct procedure. But ye see…I love the Celtic fans to death – I really do. I hate the fact that the club has become enveloped in apathy – as will be seen once the novelty of the new season wears off and CP will be back to 40% of the attendance missing because – we’re gonnae sell Vic67 and Hooper-Man – the players we’ve brought in – I hope they do well and I think they will but – we hear a lot of moaning about Vic 67 going to Southampton – not being ambitious enough blah blah etc….

…well – are Southampton any less glamorous than the clubs that Celtic are buying players from ?

The bored could have buried the orcs – oot of sight if they would have backed WGS for Stephen Fletcher – but didny.

The bored should have told Neil – when he was questioned after the LNS result that – Celtic FC are not in any way involved in the LNS stuff. In fact – the bored should have courted any questions about LNS – NOT the manager. imo

The bored – imo – new more than we on here or anywhere else on Celtic Cyberspace – new about the license situation – If they didny….they shouldny be there imo.

The bored have been hiding behind the setee since the passing of the late Paul McBride QC(RIP) – and they should have let it be known that a replacement for this fella would be installed on the bored immediately – they didny cause – they know that there are – too many happy-clapping sheep amongst the supporter -base…so…I think that the boreds strategy here is – to brass it oot. imo

The boreds God is – YOUR MONEY !!!!

If it was indicated to them that – they had a deadline to announce that – the bored was on the same page as yerself and the rest of the support – or, a block on SB payments would be effected by a growing number of – disaffected fans – the bored widny be long in standing to attention. imo

But, I’m afraid that the amount of – happy-clapping sheep – amongst the fans will head your campaign off at the pass – so to speak.

As I have been ranting for years on here – when the chips are down – the bored will look the other way. Folk seem to think that the bored are doing a brilliant job – thier entitled to that opinion – just as I’m entitled to say – when 40% of the crowd disappear(and they will again) – just how good a product is being put on the pitch ?

The pitch is where it matters – not the balance-sheet imo.

My rant is over M8 – I wish you EVERY success – but don’t say ye wurny telt :) :) :)

Hail Hail n God Bless – Off oot.

  10. twists n turns on

In fact….the “balance” is very much the key!

Decent football, success, achieved whilst paying your way.

Each fan has his own definition of success. For me, the title is a must under current circumstances, indeed, given where the opposition are positioned, 10 in a row is realistic. That could all change of course in a few years depending on future investment elsewhere, but, under current conditions, 10 in a row.

A domestic trophy as well as the title should be possible.

I believe practically any half decent manager at Celtic these days would achieve the title and 1 cup.

The test of the board’s strategy and the managers ability, lies within Europe. Group stages is a good benchmark of a decent manager. Last 16 is the benchmark for a very good manager. European success beyond that will take an exceptional manager allied to a very supportive strategy from the board.

Had the board gone for Stephen Fletcher as you say, but said Mr Fletcher got injured due to some typical Scottish refereeing blind eye turning, leaving him out for the rest of the season a la Izzigure, what guarantee would there be that we would have buried the huns there and then?

The reason you lack support for your arguments is your insistence in disrespecting the rest of the Celtic support of which I am one, you’re unable to make your case without slagging the rest of us off.

Canamalar is undertaking a new project he doesn’t have to slag off anyone who doesn’t agree with him, he does what he does instead of ranting on here every day.

Stephen Fletcher FFS that was five years ago mate and there’s no proof that he would have done anything in the Hoops.

In any argument there has to be balance and you seem incapable of seeing anything good at Celtic, e.g. you write off our financial situation which in this day and age is just silly.

It’s not Celtic’s job to bury the orcs just because you me or anyone else disnae like them, as for your PaulMcBride worship there is also no evidence that he would have done anything more for our cause in fact did he not support the new bill??

Get yer slippers oan Kev before yer heid bursts wi’ that resentment..

  23. I don’t get these Jeremiads against “the bored” – which I guess is a deliberately humorous mis-spelling???

In Scotland we have (ex)Rangers and Hearts going to the wall. Down south there are a mix of sugar-daddies, basket cases and a few private equity PLC who extract huge rents from their fans.

Celtic meanwhile are a PLC but don’t pay shareholder dividends… ever. They just invest everything that they back into the team and stadium. Their manager by all accounts is (or was) paid a fraction of the (ex) Rangers manager. They have a decent squad and a good chance of CL action this year. Given their income, league and what is going on around them … this seems an OK job.

Against that we have err… Steven Fletcher? and not hanging onto players that want to leave till their contracts run out. Not buying talent from expensive clubs??? Plus they should mount a legal challenge against a liquidated club so they can errr…something or other…stick up for the fans! Or they should have mounted a legal challenge against the SFA back in the day… with the UN or somebody… that would definitely work.

You know what … Rangers died by their own hands and Celtic didn’t have to lift a finger. That is for the best in the best of all possible worlds.

    Just enjoy it.
