We need to be honest with ourselves

255

I read in some places how poor PSV Eindhoven were last night.  PSV are not a poor team, they finished ahead of a Conference League finalist and two points behind a side who won all six of their Champions League group games last season.

During the first half, they were harried out of their stride, were unable to build periods of possession and only remained in the game as they clearly have better players than their well-drilled opponents.  Even if Newco are denied Champions League income next week, we have a fight on our hands for the domestic title.

I’m struggling to think of a single Newco squad member who would get into the Celtic team, but none of us would entertain the fantasy that our current squad would get anywhere near a European final.  Newco players have a curious level of energy and physicality.  This is what took them to Seville and what inhibited Celtic in the clubs two final meetings last season, when we managed a draw and extra-time defeat.

No later than three weeks today we will have played in the Champions League and our [principle domestic challengers.  We need to be honest with ourselves, there is still work to be done.

    Mad Mitch

    I can remember Willie Wallace playing right half when Bobby was injured- Also a young Kenny Dalglish at times.

    I think Stevie Murray was earmarked as his replacement.

  2. My friends in Celtic,

  3. Last year for a long time it looked like the Huns would win League & get automatic Champions League spot,

    However it didn’t happen,

    Then the worry was they were going to win the Europa and go straight into Pot 1 Champion’s League but thankfully that didn’t happen either.

    Now they are an away game from getting there through the Qualifiers personally I believe that won’t happen either,

    Now I see it’s time to worry again about them winning current League.

    I was confident we would win the League last year and am even more confident we will win it this year.

    90% of what we worry about doesn’t happen and even if we end up getting turned over we will still wake up net morning Celtic Fans.

    We have a decent squad, an excellent Manager, we are playing Football the Celtic Way and it’s a joy to watch,

    We have Champion’s League Group Football coming our way, yes it’s a bit scary but also intoxicating.

    My advice park your worries and enjoy the Show, what happens will happen, all the worrying in the world will not change a thing.

    Thanks for the reply.

    Helps me arrange my memories.

    I do remember KD playing as some sort of MF’er — playmaker even.

    Was not sure if BM had played alongside him in this role.

    Age stuff throws up some interesting point.

    BM = Born in 1944.

    SM = Born in 1944.

    Straight replacement it is then.

    RG = Born in 1951

    DS = Born in 1951.

    Straight replacement brought in by BMcN who had been his previous manager.

    Not sure exactly where RG played — RMid like BM or AMid because he seemed to score quite a few goals.

    Memory a bit hazy if RG was more of an AMid then who played RMid from 76 to 79?

    The jump to PMcS — born in 64 — in the spring of 82 now seems incredible.

    Regular starter for the rest of that season at 17 and making a name for himself.

  7. I don’t think Ange will buy a traditional defensive midfielder, times change, so do tactics. I think Ange is at the cutting edge of football.

    “Some teams base their strategy on the idea of playing at a speed that they think will disrupt the opponent, either when defending or attacking. For example, a team equipped with quick defenders who can accelerate rapidly and cover ground (say, 10 yards or meters) at high speed may gear its defensive play to quickly press an opponent who is either receiving or in possession of the ball. As the opposing players try to escape pressure by moving the ball to teammates, other defending players reapply the pressure quickly and relentlessly until possession is regained.”

    As CorkCelt has said earlier relax and enjoy as we are playing football the Celtic Way

    MMcL @ DM.

    DS @ RMid

    TB @ LMid

    There were goals in that MF — mostly for us but this was the start of the sieve.

    After this it was egg chasing on a Saturday so I started to lose it.

    PMcS I can remember / PG not so much.

    I am a lover of Large aspects of Japan’s history and culture.

    I am an x martial artist, in karate the best form of defense is attack. As then your opponent is reacting to you, rather than you reacting to them.

    I would love to hear the thoughts of an x football coach on the below.

    In martial arts the Japanese say that as westerners when we move, as a general rule we do so from the shoulders.

    Japanese generally move from the hips

    Maeda is imho is really difficult to push off the ball because of how he utilises this. Same when winning the ball.

  12. A photo doing the rounds, Jota and Tim Williamson at Ross Hall allegedly…….hopefully nonsense….

    I was at that game. Thought he looked a real player and just what we needed to play the way Liam Brady wanted us to play.

    How wrong you can be. Pity about his injury record and lack of steel,

    Also Davie Hay swithchedvfrom full back to midfield and George Connelly before he moved to a more defensive role

    I also think the style changed from a right half type player spraying to midfield players who ran with the ball more- Definitely felt Ronnie Glavin more of an attacking player.

  18. Anyone notice VAR not doing their job last night when Colac slapped his opponent.Was seen,and the boy got treatment.Not a Ref issue as it was off the ball.VAR saw it but advised no action required.

    Ludicrous decision.

  19. where is the pic of Jota at Ross Hall ?

    Ross Hall have opened a clinic at the GAP building at Titanium in Braehead,

    I could see that as looking a bit like Dakota hotel actually.

    Nice as it is to have you act as my editor, a more accurate conclusion would read – “You can’t easily influence the business to your preferred end”

    I doubt many of us gave full approval to all decisions of the previous Boards and their private business practices. How ethical was Fergus? Bob Kelly got praise for boycotting after the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia but was dead keen on playing teams from fascist Spain. Did all Celts agree? Could any of us have stopped following Celtic for that?

  22. Bella Ciao

    Old Tommy Larkin pushed himself up gingerly in his bed when he saw his son and two grandsons approaching. Tommy junior hugged his old man carefully, as if he was a valuable and fragile heirloom. ‘Alright Da, you been in the wars again?’ The old man’s hoarse and noticeably weaker voice rasped at him, ‘Aye, no for the first time son.’ The three visitors sat around the hospital bed to chat to the old man who on days like today looked every one of his 94 years. His once strong frame seemed somehow shrunken and his face had grown thinner as the years advanced. ‘I slipped on that damn laminate flooring, Doc says the arm’s broke but tae be honest I feel fine,’ the old man said. His grandson, Scott, looked at his proud, old face. His blue eyes still gleamed even from behind the bruising which lined them both. ‘Did ye see the game last night, granda? Big Jullien got the winner in the last minute. Ryan and I are heading tae Rome next month for the away match.’ The old man lay back on his pile of pillows. ‘Naw son, I was in an ambulance at the point. I missed the game altogether.’ Scott continued, noticing how now, 24 hours later he still felt buoyed up by Celtic’s win over Italian side Lazio. ‘They were a decent team, even if their fans are tubes. Celtic park was rocking; it was a great night, just like the old days.’ The old man, a veteran of Celtic’s greatest day in Lisbon more than half a century earlier, listened to the two younger men relay their experiences of the match with a gentle smile on his face. It pleased him that he had passed his love of Celtic on to his son and that he had in turn passed it onto his two boys and their sister Ciara. They came from different generations, had different life experiences but a huge affection for Celtic was something they all had in common.
