We want a win, but let’s not kid ourselves

964

We are almost week on from Morton (our only mustn’t lose game in March) but there will be a business-like atmosphere around Lennoxtown today as the team prepare to go to Ibrox, scene of three consecutive wins since Newco were promoted to top flight football.  Brendan and his players are all too aware of the big talk coming from Murray Park.  If ever they needed motivation, they didn’t need to look far.

Fans of either colour, who have been around long enough, will recognise the occasion, but this is not the way you and I used to feel about going to Ibrox.  Back in the old days I preferred to go there as slight underdogs, which was often as good as it got for Celtic fans.  Now, we travel to every ground in the country as strong favourites, no matter what our form.  This is nothing like it was in the pre-liquidation years.

I want to win, of course, but I would have been devastated if we’d lost to Morton.  Sunday’s game cannot reach me the same way.  This is a step on the road to what will hopefully be a treble, don’t pretend it is about winning the league, it’s just not.

  1. A strange sense of calm today before the storm erupts tomorrow. In my mind Rangers have nothing to lose, but such is the height of the pedestal that their fans -in the media especially- have placed them on, that I’m certain they cannot possibly live up to those expectations.

Keep our discipline, we win the game.

  2. Mahe the Madman on

    Blantyre Tim and Gordon etc

If we lived there it would be very different but here i have zero interaction with anything or anyone Celtic so she won’t ever find out about their hatred of us unless I introduce it to her.

I think me and her mother would feel better if she grew up without that particular knowledge.

If she finds out on her own at some stage then at least I tried.

We shall bond over something else, Lord knows what, but I’ll think I would sleep better knowing shes a little purer not knowing they and that mindset still exist today.

That’s not to say I’m right and you’re wrong.

    Hail Hail

I see Kev.J writing that Murty is clueless now I hope Brendan and the team dont share his point of view as it is the very kind of talk that can make you over confident and can cost games. As a Celtic fan I have no interest in Murty and Rangers other than to offer my opion that young Murty is far from clueless and he is doing a good job for the huns. I would love a win tomorrow or I would take a draw but we will need to be up for it our walking pace game will not be good enough we need to fight for every ball and be constantly in there faces and we should not under estimate them. H.H.

  4. Must say I read Mahe’s post at 2am with utter amazement. Talk about making a Mountain out of a Mole Hill.

Not just aiming this at Mahe but to anyone who for any reason has lost the will or desire to follow Celtic,

It is OK, live your life, be happy but leave those of us who still love & enjoy following Celtic get on with the job.

So what do you do with the following statement, a sevcomidian has just had a wee chat with me about who will win on Sunday, needless to say our opinions differ on the outcome, however I was left speechless when he said that his team would win cause

“the new rangers are back ”

Dont even know were to start with that.

The MSM can talk about a “title race”. They can say “old firm” 10 times a minute. They can go on about “Rangers” (sic) being “back” (sic).

They can say how brilliant their players are and how off-form ours are. They can create their combined teams half-filled with Sevco players. And they can manufacture fake bids for their players which get turned down.

What they cannot do is to make their players better than ours.

We have better players, a better manager and if we play anywhere near our best we will win the game comfortably.

We will create far more chances than them. Just need to make sure we take some!

For us it is a routine game against a team who are not as good as us. Just like the other 37. If the opposition and their supporters in the media want to build it up into something more then let them. Then let’s see what they are saying on Monday.

Just been reading back and caught your post of my wanting any mementoes of our trip to Lisbon. The Meal, the Mass,Stadium or Pink Street–anything would be most welcome.

Not the son of Willie Fernie but in the 50’s my dad was the Secretary of the Celtic Supporters Association and his brother John was the man who accompanied Tommy Burns and his dad on the night a young Tommy signed for Celtic.Tommy respectfully remembers him on his DVD.

Once again, thanks for remembering my request re Lisbon. HH.

  12. Brogan Rogan Trevino and Hogan on

Following on from the issues that Mahe has raised here is a very personal perspective and I stress this is my experience and my own personal views. Others will have differing views and experiences which are no less valid but carry no greater weight or importance and vice versa.

Let me start by saying that I like Scotland. I like the majority of the people I come into contact with irrespective of what team they support, what sport they follow, what faith the practice or if they practice none at all.

In the main, I don’t come across bigotry and sectarianism, though I have in the past come across complete and absolute bigotry, attempted bullying and prejudice from an employee of The Bank Of Scotland which I could not explain. In fact, I didn’t even recognise it as anti Catholic sectrianism until it was pointed out by the season ticket holding, Rangers shareholder grandson of David Hope, the former chairman of Rangers FC Ltd, who was only chairman for 17 minutes until someone else remembered that his dead wife had been a catholic!

Once i realised what the bank employee was about, it didn’t take long to have someone higher up in the bank have him removed as an investigation revealed a pattern of behaviour which the bank could neither explain nor defend.

Equally, the behaviour of the Ibrox board ensured that my Rangers supporting pal followed in his father’s and his grandfather’s footsteps in that he too married a Celtic supporting catholic much to the chagrin of some former “friends”. Incidentally, he no longer goes to Ibrox because he refuses to expose his children to “those people” and what they believe in and stand for.

And I know many like him.

Similarly, in business a big number of my own clients were fans of the Ibrox club. One, whom I befriended 30 years ago in the course of refusing to do something that would have greatly helped him out but would have led to a conflict with another Rangers supporting client, has not set foot inside Ibrox since some time in the 1970’s. He still follows football of all types on TV (His father won league medals with both Rangers and Everton) but he too says he would never associate himself or meet with people who express the type of bigoted view or preference that is espoused from the Ibrox stands.

In fairness, I have to say that I was once invited into the “Tim” team amongst certain legal types. To me, that was just as bad as any other type of team based on ethnicity or religious lines and so my reply was thanks but no thanks.

However, my point is that in the main I like Scotland and its people. Sure, I don’t agree with everyone, or all the instituions, or the traditional way of thinking in some quarters and I believe in the Trotskyesque view that just because something was right yesterday it will not necessarily be right for tomorrow and so you should always question not only yourself but your govrenment, your business, and whatever to ccheck on and plan ahead for tomorrow. If that means fighting for change in your business, your street, your party or whatever then stand and fight: express your view and say your piece.

With Celtic, well for me the club has always been a social movement that was formed and based here in Glasgow. I think the club has certainly been a positive force for The West of Scotland Irish community in and around Glasgow, for many people from the Highlands who found themselves in Glasgow, for Scotland in general and indeed for football in Scotland, the UK, throughout Europe and the rest of the world.

Some of that influence, some of the good that the club and its fans have brought about, has been achieved in the face of out and out opposition which, at times, has been based on prejudice, enshrined and institutional bigotry, and almost automatic mindless emotional, political and social segregation.

Personally, I think that is something that I want my children and their children to know and recongnise. In other areas of the world there is similar discrimination in operation based on gender, skin colour, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, height, weight, social background, political viewpoint, and many other things – and wherever my children end up on the planet they should know that in the opinion of their parents, at least, such prejudice should never be tolerated or encouraged — actively or passively.

But as I say, I am fortunate in that in the main I do not see much of that in Scotland except when it comes to football, and even there i feel it is on the wane.

I think I mix with many people from different backgrounds, from all walks of life, of all faiths and I just don’t feel like I live in a country that is filled, in the main, with hatred or prejudice as Mahe describes or is fearful of.

There are those who obviously don’t like me, my chosen religion, my team or my Irish background but they are so insignificant, so out of touch, so marginalised, not by me, but by their own narrow mindedness that they are an increasing irrelevence and represent an ever decreasing point of view.

Celtic, as a club, as an institution, as a business, as a foundation, as any kind of recogniseable entity continues to grow in the community, to engage with people of all backgrounds, and to do great things for people from any and all backgrounds just as was originally envisaged.

I think that is something to be hugely proud of. Something that in a wee small way I would want to play an active part in and be part of and to support.

Celtic has always been, and in my opinion, always will be a social movement with a political (with a small p) agenda in that it was forned with the intention of achieving results which have nothing whatsoever to do with football. There isn’t now, and never was, any league table or cups for feeding children or helping the poor, or in any way looking to bring about social change, yet that, to at least some respect, has always been part of Celtic’s stated purpose.

We were more than a football club and a club like no other from the very outset, and the non footballing agenda was to specifically help, support, and change the lives of the poor from the east end of Glasgow and surrounding areas.

As many know, I flit between being a west ender and living in rural Stirlingshire. In only its second year, Celtic made charitable donations to help the plight of the Irish and the poor of the Endrick Valley where many Irish labourers (and others) were to be found working on the new resevoir being built at Loch Katrine and the infrastructure which would bring the water supply all the way into Glasgow.

Celtic’s influence within Scotland was felt at and from the very outset and my own view is that I prefer to be defined and shaped by the influence of Celtic and the values of those who founded the club than by the vocal ramblings of an ever more irrelevant group who have a diametrically opposite set of values which are a completely foreign country to me.

No, I don’t alway agree with the way the club is run, its structure in business or legal terms, or the decisions that are made about how to deal with this issue or that. I wish Celtic played more in Europe as I believe that is where we truly belong in terms of modern football, and it is the type of experience I grew up with in the late sixtes and seventies.

I believe that the SFA and the SPFL are both organisations which need root and branch reform to recognise what is needed for football in Scotland in the modern era, and to ensure that the rubbish that has been allowed to take place in the past, has been tolerated in the past, is jettisoned by one and all and confined to the history bin.

All of that requires Celtic being based in Scotland, fighting for its beliefs, our beliefs, in Scotland, influencing in Scotland, working in Scotland, pushing the envelope in Scotland, and helping to shape things in Scotland for the better.

To leave, for a more “convenient” or lucrative football home or league would, in my opinion, be a dereliction of duty and a selling of the spiritual and ethical jerseys.

I am, and always will remain, a west of Scotland Irish Celtic fan and proud of each term within that sentence!

Though I have to admit that I am partial to some Tuscan sun and a little Dolce Vita whenever it is on offer …………

Dinna fret about tomorrow………. and don’t let the rotten fourth estate con you into believing that the ghost of Ibrox past is present or in play, because no matter what the result that is not the case and the imposter is on financial life support and everyone with a brain knows it.

Sorrry for the long post again.

  14. Morning all, I have been watching from afar this week, well Manchester actually. Great to avoid all the OF bollocks going on up here as the MSM getting all moist about their heroes finally having a punchers chance.

I have been very busy and this weekend will be no different, some great posts on here this week and my own contribution will be very pale in comparison.

My lhad is up for the game as usual tomorrow, it was funny to see his big happy face in the crowd at Ipox in the Sky trailers for the derby games this weekend, hopefully he will be happy tomorrow. My only concern about tomorrow is to ensure he gets home safely.

Lot of cooking to be done today, sausage cassoulet in main course today, tomorrow will be pasta based. After the game tomorrow I will return home and my Lenten pledge to stay off the booze will be hard to stick to if we scupper the MSM bandwagon. I don’t look forward to any of these bigotfests so I will keep a good distance from all the nonsense.

If we play well and to 90% of our ability we should win, I have concerns over our goal line loving keeper which I hope will not cause us grief. . Take care everyone and look after each other. HH

I read your comments on the next generation and why they are insightful and well laid out. I am of a different mind.

I am in my 60’s and I have attended Celtic park since 1960 when my dad first took me. I met my grandfather there and often my 6 uncles and other Family. We stood at the first pole in the jungle, originally the 3rd pole and there were between 20 -40 of the family at each game. In the 60s we went every week, first team then the reserves the next week. My dad took around 4 or 5 children to each game all lifted over.

I did then see Celtic park as part of my family as I always met them amongst our larger Celtic Family. Since the modern era and allocated seating, we now gather around Walfrids statue before the match and visit the families memorial bricks behind Walfrids statue and then disperse to our individual seats.

My 2 sons are now grown men but Celtic is something we share and it remains a main plank of our relationship. In time, I expect them to be there with Grandchildren. Celtic is something we do together.

Archaeologist reckon primitive man built memorials and had a type of ancestor worship. My feelings are similar, I love going to Celtic Park especially on match days. I reckon I have been there around a Thousand times. I still join in signing especially you’ll never walk alone. When at the stadium I think of all those that have passed my Grandfather, his 7 sons and my cousins among the many. It is my joy to remember my dead relatives when I am at Celtic Park. I don’t think I am alone.

Each person has different views on what Celtic mean to them, but to me the memories mean a lot to me.

I have been lucky to have watched Celtic through the Stein era and since and it is a matter of pride how the club has evolved. I still miss the Jungle and the meeting my family standing together to support our team, singing the praises and cheering the bhoys on.

I see what you have avoiding introducing your daughter to Celtic to protect her and that is right for you but for me and others introducing our children is a great joy both to them and to other members of the family.

    See we never walk alone
