West Brom-Celtic row: it’s about Rekeem Harper, not Oli Burke

228

There is a subtext to the unedifying comments by West Bromwich Albion technical director, Luke Dowling, concerning Oliver Burke’s care at Celtic last season: Rekeem Harper.

Dowling told the Daily Record, “Once Brendan [Rodgers] left to go to Leicester the treatment he got from the manager that’s in place now is something we don’t expect for one of our players.”  Short of curbing Burke’s playing time, as Brendan Rodgers also did, there were no issues between Neil and Oliver.

Rekeem Harper is a completely different matter.  The 19-year-old central midfielder is out of contract next week and Celtic can sign him for Training Compensation money.  He is coming off a breakthrough season at West Brom, where he made 12 league starts since his first in December.  Celtic are monitoring the situation, while Dowling is doing what he can to persuade the player to stay in the Midlands.

These comments are all a bit transparent.  They are not based on reality and I would be amazed if they convinced Rekeem Harper he should sign a new contract with West Brom.

Hopefully we’ll get a positive conclusion to the Turnbull transfer he looks a prospect. As ever it’s good to get some snippets from Lennbhoy and Catman, always appreciated. Hopefully the interest in the Kilmarnock players is just that, interest and it goes no further as I genuinely don’t think either is an upgrade on Hayes (if we sell KT) at LB and I’ve seen nothing in O’Donnell that makes him a better prospect than Ralston (and he’s done nothing to suggest he’s PC Lustig’s replacement)

At least Celtic dont need to worry about turnbull doing a Hartson on them (Rangers pulled out of his transfer because of a medical issue… he signed for Celtic and the rest is history ) …

Sevco dont have 3 million to pay motherwell …

mind you, Sevco buying someone and sevco actually paying for him are two different things….

    Thanks for the polite reply.

Nobody was led to believe anything. Some people posted stuff about which they were uninformed. Lennybhoy, on the other hand, gets some inside info close to the event but, even there, there’s many a slip between intention and completion.

That’s one way of putting it, another might be that after reading several things on several blogs and newspapers etc I formed an opinion based on the info contained in those articles etc, just as today Paul67 ‘led us to believe’

interesting phrase which was used as I understand it to mean ‘influenced to a certain belief by something heard seen or read

our spat with West Brom was about something to do with a 19yr old youth player. I wonder who led him to believe that or maybe he is speculating and just offering an opinion on something he heard seen or read. Either way it matters not a jot as most Celtic fans appear to have accepted this version of events. Combined with the release of the statement from Celtic I think it’s safe to say the story is now buried on Celtic Forums and blogs.

There are posters who are pro-Board, others who are anti-Board and a lot in between trying to make balanced judgements, not always succeeding.

    Never disputed that.

I think JF is a fine writer but can be quite volatile with his opinions, quick to react and occasionally, a bit OTT.

Won’t disagree, I think the Battered Bunnet maybe, spoke recently about JF seeing things in B&W to often.

Not being afraid to be critical of things Celtic is a good thing imho.

Paul67 is less excitable and, probably restricted by his access but the idea that CQN is an influential moulder of Celtic supporter’s views on Celtic, is fanciful and does not stand up to evidence. Most Celts are unaware of the site and, those that are, take it with a pinch of salt, and just want to beat Rangers again (even though they died).

Honestly not sure as of the point of this, did I say otherwise. I mentioned another site had ran with the same story re West Brom(I think I read the same thing on Celts are Here and 1 other site). It was also mentioned on twitter, this was then followed up with Celtics denial of anything untoward I was alluding to this maybe being something ‘put out there’. I’m sure Celtic, as do other clubs, have access to ‘friendly bloggers’. Making sure you get your message to as many outlets as possible would be a clear strategy for Celtics PR dept. CQN on its own isn’t that influential on that we agree.

I get a bit fed up being painted as pro-Board because I am sceptical about the wilder claims being made about them being Masons and anti-Celtic (they’ve done a terrible job of undermine us by allowing 8iar to happen).

I have been around the site for a bit now and while I don’t always agree with your analysis I wouldn’t say you were explicitly pro board.

I know the Celtic Board let me, personally, down in 2012 and, subsequently, re their passive response to the dead club’s cheating. I am strongly critical, too, of their overall reactive PR on the historical coach abuse issue. But I refuse to join in the hysteria re transfer dealings as the historical record shows they are getting a lot right

There are more than 40 shades of green opinion

    Couldn’t agree more

Re Turnbull , i hope it’s the blood thingy rather than the knee. It’s one thing to have a dodgy knee playing the amount of games Celtic have to play , including plastic pitches , but certain other medical conditions ,properly handled can have a minimal impact on a player’s career. Just ask Daniel Fergus McGrain.

what an utterly ridiculous penalty decision to allow holland to beat japan in the womans world cup

even though it did win me 20 quid from my coupon

so gave half of it to this

  6. I looked at that pen and, like many in the Women’s WC, I don’t know why it was awarded. It did not seem to strike an arm, if it did, it was an arm being withdrawn behind her back when faced with a shot from close range. I don’t know what more the defender could do.

If we start getting award for these type of incidents in the SPFL then Tavernier will be a great bet for Top Scorer next season

I’m surprised your surprised at being board friendly.

For years on these pages you said that Peter Lawwell didn’t interfere in manager’s business.

I told you i heard directly from a former player he definitely did, yet you kept posting that nonsense.

That’s not only board friendly, more propaganda or worse, telling lies to fellow Celtic fans, what was your motivation for that?

  8. Ha ha, are you seriously denying it ?

Are you saying you have never stated that PL doesn’t involve himself in manager’s business, seriously?

    You’re not quick enough, clearly.

  11. SID

    Definitely.

I recognise my own words when I see them.

Those are your words. They were never spoken or typed by me.

Good luck in finding evidence to the contrary- but I doubt you’ll even bother trying.

If you want to debate what I “think” goes on in transfer operations as opposed to what you “think” goes on, I’m happy to give it a go, but I won’t be boxed in by what you think or wish I had said.

Here’s a clear statement to start you off-

“If PL is NOT involved in transfer negotiations in and out of this club- the he is not doing his job properly.”

  12. quadrophenian on

Has wur club came out and issued a categoric “neither KT nor CalMac is for sale” statement since the English clubs have been mentioned as interested?

Also, as we keep hearing there’s gunna be a lot of ins and outs, who are the most likely OUTS in the summer window? Olli, Marvin, Eboue or Morgan?? HH

  13. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

Not sure I can last the transfer window.

So far (according to dying media organisations) …..

    – Tierney is leaving

    – McGregor is leaving

    – Edouard is leaving

    – Rogic is leaving

    – Nobody is signing except maybe Julian (is he bringing Dick, Anne, George and Timmy the dog?)

    – Turnbull failed a medical (my source told me it wasn’t the knee but that he has only nine toes)

    – We were “not nice” to Oli Burke

    Did I get that right?

    Hail hail

  14. SFTB I coach minor soccer over here and we’re only 5 games intae the season and the amount of handball penalties given so far is bordering on ridiculous.

We had one again last night which we would call ball tae arm, the big lad punished was almost greetin “honestly coach” he said “it hit my shoulder”.

We are governed by the Canadian Soccer Association which is part of FIFA so I’m thinking that any ball that hits anywhere on the arm is now a penalty, we better get used tae it.

  15. Rumour we have offered £750k for Turnbull after he failed medical due to issue with medial knee ligament. Karma has turned full circle on Motherwell after they went public and hawked him off to Norwich thinking they were smart. Now we go back and turn the screw.

If true, one wonders if the player and the agent knew he has a dodgy knee and did he fail Norwich medical?

Personally i would walk away from the deal.
