Westminster MPs ready to accommodate Administrators

572

A group of Westminster MPs are set to accommodate administrators Rangers FC PLC in London tomorrow in the hope of using whatever influence they have to pull a deal together.  Political interference in distressed companies is not uncommon but on this occasion the risks of collateral damage are enormous.

Fifa strictly prohibits political interference in football matters and has banned national teams and their representative clubs from international competition for matters as trivial as politically motivated appointments, never mind overt political lobbying on behalf of a football club in tax delinquency.

Prime Minister, David Cameron, commented on Rangers situation last week, although unlike Scottish First Minister, Alex Salmond, he limited himself to a neutral comment, however, I hear that Treasury officials have already been lobbied to exert pressure on HM Revenue and Customs to agree to whatever necessary to prevent Rangers from suffering the consequences of not paying tax.

Ironically, it’s Celtic and the Scotland national team who are set to suffer.  Craig Levein hopes to take his Scotland team into the World Cup qualifying tournament in September while Neil Lennon will hope to give his Celtic team a chance to qualify for the Champions League.  Fifa would be delighted to take the British government and football associations down a notch or two after the accusations of bribery at the international body emanating from England when their bid to host the World Cup perished.

Duff and Phelps have nothing to lose from meeting the MPs but with so much at stake for Scotland, Celtic and our other European entrants next season, the Scottish and London politicians must rein-in their over political interference and the SFA must get off their backsides and remind everyone of Fifa rules.

  2. When Sion tried to get the Swiss Authorities to back them up didn’t Fifa/Uefa warn them off by telling the Swiss authorities to leave well alone or else all Swiss teams , including the national team would be barred from competing .

    This seemed to do the trick , surely the Scottish authorities wouldn’t be so daft as to be seen to punish all of Scottish football by trying to save r******s .

    Or am I missing something .

    Wasn’t Adam Ingram the minister who sanctioned the release of Jason Campbell (murderer of young Celtic supporter Mark Scott) as part of the Good Friday agreement. Campbell was on a list of UVF prisoners. Ingram chickened out and acted daft when the Sunday Mail went mental about it and was forced to remove Campbell’s name from the list.

    Just on a wee point of muddy waters yer man whyte claims the ticketus deal is finance, ticketus say they don’t do loans or finance, they invest in asets.

    The Tv reports manage to mention both in the same sentence “bridging finance whn they bought the ticket assets”. Just words put together.

    I believe the administrators suggest it was 20m plus vat.

    Check, and mate. No vat on loans or finance. They have sold the tickets. I could not have put them in a bigger mess if i’d tried, and boy i would have tried. Ticketus would go to court even with a newco.

  15. Snake Plissken – I know I shouldn’t be surprised any more, but the depths of delusion to which the permanently raging hun mind will sink in order to rationalise its hatred of all things Celtic/Irish/Catholic retains the capacity to amaze.

    With the internet now allowing like-minded huns to nurse the wrath of their fellow bears by crowdsourcing bitter fantasies, sites like Follow Follow act as a sort of demented virtual echo chamber, like an Orange Lodge that’s open 24/7.

    Other things we’ve learned from Follow Follow:

    * Celtic used floodlights in WW2 to help guide German bombers onto British cities

    * “Castle Greyskull” is a coded reference to those who died in the Ibrox Disaster

    * “Hun” is a sectarian term

    * The Fields of Athenry is racist

    * Celtic was founded because Brother Walfrid was a bigot who wanted to stop Irish immigrants integrating with Scottish society

    * And other mentally hilarious lulz I’m too weary to remember right now

    Here’s how the American Psychiatric Association diagnoses sociopaths:

    * failure to conform to social norms with respect to lawful behaviors as indicated by repeatedly performing acts that are grounds for arrest;

    * deception, as indicated by repeatedly lying, use of aliases, or conning others for personal profit or pleasure;

    * impulsiveness or failure to plan ahead;

    * irritability and aggressiveness, as indicated by repeated physical fights or assaults;

    * reckless disregard for safety of self or others;

    * consistent irresponsibility, as indicated by repeated failure to sustain consistent work behavior or honor financial obligations;

    * lack of remorse,/ as indicated by being indifferent to or rationalizing having hurt, mistreated, or stolen from another;

    Having watched Scotland Tonight and listening to Dingwall and The MP O Donohoe (?) I can see pressure and a case for an HMRC deal to be done that FIFA/UEFA will not interfere with.

    I argued the possibility a few weeks back on RTC blog and it has NO downsides for all parties IF a repayment plan is put in place that allows the taxpayer to be satisfied that it will get its money back as quick as is prudent and so is in their interests to agree to such a deal.

    Rangers keep their history (but get the EBT titles of 2003 and 2005 definitely removed under unfair competitive advantage rules and possibly the last three titles for switching competitive advantage from EBT to Debt, rather than budgetting for the potential back EBT tax)

    Scottish Football avoids the integrity dilema of where a Newco starts not to mention the nightmare logistics and challenges

    The tax gets paid and Rangers get what they lost chasing empty symbols of worth – some vestige of dignity.

    TV company is happy

    Rangers get saddled with the kind of wage paying and so playing circumstances clubs like Hibs and Dundee Utd* have learned to cope with but with a much larger income source to meet the tax due.

    The only downside “however” is who is put in charge of Rangers for frankly their attitude culturally cannot be trusted (and this also was recognised by Speirs tonight) . Some sort of “Governor” arrangement is required with two aims:

    To follow specific adherence rules that are transparent to everyone to stop rule bending to get out of the tax mire more quickly.

    To prepare for handover to independent ownership once the tax is paid.

    * I had a quick look at Dundee Utd accounts for 2009. The wage bil was £3.6M on a turnover of £5.8M. Using that as a rough guide:

    Working backwards if the “Governor” set the wage bill at say £6M how much, after paying other running costs would anyone estimate would be left to pay HMRC annually at a rate that would satisfy taxpayers it was a good deal for them and not an easy way out for the dodgers?

    All Rangers supporters have to do is decide what is more important, beating Celtic or having a club to support. The club made the wrong decision in 2007 and the support went with it, but knowing the conserquences would they now accept what always had to have priority and that is the long term sustainabilityof their club?

    So I have still not ruled out a deal until the guys with the figures tell me a repayment plan cannot be done within a £3M to £6M wage ceiling.
