Westminster MPs ready to accommodate Administrators

572

A group of Westminster MPs are set to accommodate administrators Rangers FC PLC in London tomorrow in the hope of using whatever influence they have to pull a deal together.  Political interference in distressed companies is not uncommon but on this occasion the risks of collateral damage are enormous.

Fifa strictly prohibits political interference in football matters and has banned national teams and their representative clubs from international competition for matters as trivial as politically motivated appointments, never mind overt political lobbying on behalf of a football club in tax delinquency.

Prime Minister, David Cameron, commented on Rangers situation last week, although unlike Scottish First Minister, Alex Salmond, he limited himself to a neutral comment, however, I hear that Treasury officials have already been lobbied to exert pressure on HM Revenue and Customs to agree to whatever necessary to prevent Rangers from suffering the consequences of not paying tax.

Ironically, it’s Celtic and the Scotland national team who are set to suffer.  Craig Levein hopes to take his Scotland team into the World Cup qualifying tournament in September while Neil Lennon will hope to give his Celtic team a chance to qualify for the Champions League.  Fifa would be delighted to take the British government and football associations down a notch or two after the accusations of bribery at the international body emanating from England when their bid to host the World Cup perished.

Duff and Phelps have nothing to lose from meeting the MPs but with so much at stake for Scotland, Celtic and our other European entrants next season, the Scottish and London politicians must rein-in their over political interference and the SFA must get off their backsides and remind everyone of Fifa rules.

Theory is ok, but with no chance of competing for a prolonged period the crowds would be tiny from year 2, the budget colapses and they are back to the court of session.

  5. Have to agree with Excellent[ with a capital E] CQNer James Forrest’s point that I too would get no satisfaction from being awarded honours in retrospect. As he so eloquently put, these things are to be enjoyed IN THE MOMENT. I cannot derive any pleasure at being given these by default years later.

I believe they SHOULD be awarded but in no way should this be considered ‘recompence’.

The Westminster Celtic Supporters Club has been in existence for many years. One of my former staff had an aunt who was an MP for an English Constituency and who was a member of the Club. There was a newspaper article about the time of Seville highlighting some of the members.

    +++++

Rangers were still using EBTs up to an including 09/10. Haven’t seen their audited accounts for 2011 to comment on, but Whyte (who can be trusted to get such things correct, right?) is on record as stating that he put an end to them (EBTs) when he took over last May – which suggests that they were also in use last season.

I’d just repatriate any and all trophies they’ve won since 02/03:

    5 League Titles

    4 Scottish Cups

    6 League Cups.

  9. Auldheid

    An very good summation.

Regardless of what happens now they are going to be weakened significantly and Celtic should win the titles for the foreseeable future.

Rangers dying has its own appeal but watching them toil and struggle for third place would have its own joys.

In any event they must be made to suffer.

If they need those old firm (although such a term would be incorrect) games we know how to get them:

League cup sections again Celtic and Newco together every year they are in the lower leagues.

Scottish cup home and away 3rd round tie, away goals counting like a European match.

    Integrity must be maintained

I’d be happy for trophies to be stripped from Huns without us being awarded their tainted titles. Even better if HMRC can go back to 1993 and manage to strip at least 1 of their HUN in a row.

The current SPL football deal is the very poor relation of Eu football.

Even the new one adds only an extra £3mill pa to the pot.

Add in the Sky led deal with the SFA for the SC and the NT games and we are getting shafted big time by both Sky and the BBC.

£13 mill for the SPL – ESPN in the main plus Sky doing a bit of cherry picking and the shambles of a BBC highlights show.

£16mill to the SFA. – sky in the main plus some crumbs for the BBC in the SC and another set of highlights.

Sky takes £400mill plus – possibly as much as £500mill – in sales and subs from the Scottish TV Market and puts back less than 5% of that into Scottish football.

Their product is sports led and cricket / RL is not big box office north of the border so we are getting ripped off – cheap deal for the SPL / SFA and subsidising the EPL.

The actual costs of delivery are small so Scotland’s revenues go straight to the bottom line in the form of 25% of their profit margin.

However Sky are not the only culprits.

The BBC output is shameful compared to their efforts with the EPL / EFL.

They get it on the cheap and they deliver it on be cheap.

STV is a husk of it’s former self and does not even bother trying.

The demise of the TFOD is not the issue regarding the finances of Scottish football it is the scandalously low TV revenues that go back into the game.

If the TFOD fail to survive Sky will still need to flog their subscription packages in Scotland.

They have 25% of their profit margin and consequently share price riding on it.

I agree. UEFA will point out to Article 50 of their FFP rules on tax due which will allow overdue tax not to considered as such under Annex VIII para 2 b if a written agreement is reached on repayment between club and the tax authority.

Given all the other plus points I described previous I reckon that s long as the tax repayment schedule was in big castor oil doses all parties would swallow it and Celtic would be happy to see it administered.

After wrapping up our 5th title on the trot in 2015/16 and getting to the final of the Europa League for the 2nd time in 14 years (which we win..2-1 against Porto :) ) Ran*ers 1690 FC finally gain promotion to the SFL Division 2 after 5 years in the wilderness.

In season 2018/19 Celtic FC, after retaining our SPL title for the 8th straight season announce the rebuilding of the main stand to accomodate the possible influx of supporters due to negotiations ongoing in UEFA regarding restructuring of the Champions League into a full season league, comprised of 34 midweek games between Europe’s top club’s in a Home & Away 3 point for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss format.

Donohue was not talking about a deal that would see HUN FC PLC ( in administration) pay back their full outstanding debt to HMRC. He was talking about a pence in the pound CVA or nothing.

Full remittance or liquidation should be HMRC’s stance. Can’t imagine HMRC will be happy to act as a bank. If it is a repayment plan then surely interest has to be compounded at a rate of a soon to be non triple A rated economy.
