What did we learn last night?

902

So what did we learn last night?  For a start, when we need to, we can defend effectively and shut up shop, last night was our fourth clean sheet in Europe this season.  The 4-5-1 formation, deployed for the opening 65 minutes, was not effective at producing attacking opportunities, although this may be as much to do with personnel as formation.

Emilio Izaguirre was swamped every time the ball went near him, which did little to settle his confidence.  It was wise for Neil Lennon to hook him and drop Charlie Mulgew back.  I felt sorry for Miku, who looked like a player in an unfamiliar line-up.  He is not a lone target man but will do well when we get the ball to his feet. He was only asked to play that role due to injuries Hooper, Stokes and Samaras and will only do so again under similar circumstances. By contrast, Hooper looked the part once he came on. He bullied defenders as effectively as he does in the SPL, a real pleasing point for me.

Victor Wanyama needs to improve his sharpness to make the most of his composure and tackling ability at this level.  The perpetual motion of Champions League teams means a fraction of a second off-pace can compromise the defensive formation.

Did you notice how every time Commons got the ball he was thinking “goal”? His turn before crossing from the left belied the meagre money we paid for him. He is every inch a Champions League player.

James Forrest was played out of the game by the full back. He/Neil needed to find a resolution to this challenge but it didn’t happen. He tried to knock the ball round the outside and pass on the inside a couple of times, which was over-ambitions, to say the least. I don’t think we saw him drop the shoulder and take the player on with the ball, which is a pity, as I’m sure he had the taking of his marker. Both Forrest and Wanyama will be stronger on Match Day 2.

The first objective from our return to Champions League football was that we would be able to compete at this level.  That achieved, we can look forward to Moscow in 12 days time.

  1. As for Green….the longer he keeps flappin’ his twisted lips the faster will be their demise.

Sevco….a step too far for the greedy vulture.

As for his quote,”…the stupidity of Scotland.”. Well, I would’ve thought that even the worst of the butcher’s apron brigade might find that hard to swallow.

Mind you, they swallow everything else…..

  2. mrob1967 – You might think popular ginger disk jockey Chris Evans was engaged in harmless Thursday morning hijinks when interviewing his mystery guest about dolphins and whales, but he was actually MOCKING THE IBROX DISASTER!!!111!1

    FACT!!!11???!

    Radio silence brother bears. (thumbsup)

  3. Not been a big fan of Scott Brown, and said as much on these pages.Last night he was fantastic, and probably will never play a better game for the Hoops .Lustig looked very comfortable and assured.I thought Miku put a great shift in,though not seeing much of the ball.He has got a very good first touch and has awareness of team mates. Can’t believe it’s the same Izzy………real shame he has lost all confidence and a few yards of pace.I think NL is trying to play him through it,but I would have subbed him at HT for his own good. Here’s hoping he can get his mojo back.Very good point IMO ,without Ledley,Kayal and Samaras,3 certain starters .We were possibly a Samaras away from getting the 3 points. Finally, very pleased that Neil got his team shape spot on.

Ra Bommur’s been inconsolable since scuffing one of his brown brogues at the Edinburgh Fringe – where his routine had the critics in a tizzy.

Legless and Cornelius Graham are currently revamping their double-act to fill the void. OFCOM have been contacted prior to any bookings.

will go on line tonight to try and contact the club about it.

Poor effort really – even an apology on the website would do me

  6. Just listened to Radio Shortbread sport,Celtic were the 7th item,”despite only getting a draw against Benfica…” I’m sure Chick Hun,Leckie,Lamont et al will be looking forward to their freebies in Lisbon,Moscow and Barca.Seriously hurting huns.

    Thanks for your response.

Yes, Charlie has a presence in midfield and has a bit of insurance against his habit of getting caught on the ball.

I agree, a fully fit midfield would give a manager a bit of a problem, although with a clever use of subs, he could freshen it up during a game and keep a high tempo throughout.

  8. EDB-He said if/when the huns start getting titles stripped ,he said ” I hope it all kicks off..” might be a slip of the tongue…..a bhoy posted a link a couple of pages back.

  9. Guidi was predicting a riot in upbeat anticipatory tones if the huns get stripped, while his partner fud was yukkin’ it up about how much fun bungs under the table at Christmas can be for footballers, especially the hun variety.

All that cheatin’, corruption, violence? Pah! A mere bagatelle…a nonsense….nothing to worry our wee heads about. Soon be forgotten as the mighty power rangers zoom to the apex once again.

The usual comedy nonsense from SSB, the usual guff about how jocularly violent and corrupt are the huns, how it’s really all nothing to worry about….huns will be huns….dontcha just love ’em?

As usual, nothing will be done because the hun is really just a misunderstood angel. Dontcha know? And the polis see them as their citizen wing, keepin’ Scotland safe for masons.

  10. My Dear Kojo….

I concur with your most perspicacious observations on last night’s ‘performance’

As I had feared,Our Ginger Apprentice scorned a Golden Opportunity to start our CL campaign with a vital home win..

Whether he should have started with Miku+Watt upfront….

Or just Miku on his lonesome,is up for debate….

However….He should certainly have brought on Watt to partner Miku for at least the last half hour..,rather than the off-form Hooper….

At the very least,he should have replaced the tiring and ineffectual Forrest for the closing stages….

It is quite astonishing that Lennon appears to place so little faith in Tony Watt….

When he is the one player in our squad who has NEVER let us down….

And who offers a direct skilful and physical edge to our attack….

Which would ask questions of the opposing defences….

I agree that we could have played another hour with that team, without scoring….

Instead,we get Our Naive Ginger Apprentice criticising Tony Watt….

    In our ‘Hostile Domestic Press’….

For not being a ‘good trainer’….

Personally,I don’t care how good a ‘trainer’ a player is reckoned to be…..

So long as he performs magnificently in competitive matches….

So Our Manager continues to make costly mistakes….

With little evidence that he is learning from the process….

Perhaps he feels just a wee bit too secure in his post…?

Much like the case with Levein…

Who ignored a Tsunami of Opinion calling for Rhodes to be given a meaningful opportunity in Scotland’s quest of Brazil 2014….

We expect much better from a Celtic Manager..

It’s totally irrelevant to try to compare his performance to that of a bloated ex-quiz show celebritee, currently employed by a ramshackle fourth-tier outfit….

    Anyway….Credit where credit’s due….

    For a timely re-acquaintance with Gillettes’ Finest….

Pity about the ‘adolescent’ habit of chewing gum whilst being interviewed..

Bit like Harry Enfield’s gormless teenage nerd,”Kevin”……?

The punt thing annoys me as well. But I think you need to cut the players and manager some slack. Apart from Brown none of them have played in the Champions League before.

Our young squad will learn a lot this season playing at this level. While it was frustrating that Forrest didn’t get his game going, much of that was down to his marker being a very good player. Credit where it is due.

  15. good afternoon all,

Tried to post earlier (around noon) when i got home from the game but think i broke the blog!!!!

    So here goes again,

pretty much in agreement with Paul there, i was quite happy with the performance last night, considering we are missing kayal, stokes (remember him) and more importantly for me, ledley and samaras. Also remember the new bhoys have had very little training time with the rest of the squad.

I really think that once we have the full squad to choose from, we will see the very best of the likes of kris commons as the creative player he surely is.

I think also when samaras is back and firing it will help james forrest as benfica full back had him in his pocket with no alternative on the other wing.

Was delighted with the form of kelvin wilson, despite one near fatal slip, which he recovered very well. I have not been a fan of his up til the last few months but maybe we have a proper centre half at last and even lustig looked good last night.

It’s still a work in progress but the possibilities for this squad ‘could’ be superb.

Now move on to saturday Celtic and make sure the attitude is right (and better than last saturday)

    Hail Hail

  16. On the Aberdeen forum…

Positive Discrimiation in Favour of Sevco!

Jim McInally has had it confirmed by the SFA Referees Supervisor that Sevco will not have a trainee/developer/learner referee for any of their matches. Whilst other 3rd Div Clubs have to endure the mistakes made by those inexperienced and developer referees – much to the detriment of all those other Clubs.

e.g. Peterhead had 3 players sent off in the derby game against Elgin City, at the weekend.

The sending offs may have been correct, but the learning loon fairly lost control of the game.

Another instance of the SFA (Establishment) giving Sevco favourable treatment, but which won’t be mentioned by the Greener or the MSM.

I’m just too young to remember Billy Price.

I think left mid is definitely Mulgrews best position. He’s not a natural CH and is sometimes very exposed at LB especially against classier wingers. In midfield he has very good workrate and a physical presence, both of which were put to good use last night.

    ———————————————-

I was in the 3rd row from front, 405 in the North stand, amazing view.

I really thought Charlie & Issy did not combine well at all in the first half. Too often a ball was played to CM on the touchline, Issy would go slightly ahead of him on the inside, then check back,

was crying out for a quick ball up the touchline and away into the corner, wither for Miku or Issy to chase.

We really missed Sammi for that out.

    Just a wee observation.

  24. Celtic’s graph in European competition has been rising steadily and I reckon we have only suffered two defeats in our last eleven games with a huge improvement in away results. I had that sinking feeling last night when I heard the bad news that Gary Hooper was the latest injury problem and with Georgios out we had no goal threat up front and I think we would have got full points if the two guys were available from the start. Benfica were way off the pace in the early stages and were there for the taking in the last fifteen minutes.

It was a solid European performance and good to see at last Kelvin Wilson show the class that encouraged Neil to sign him for Celtic and Lustig, why he is a first choice Swedish International player. Young Matthews is another Danny McGrain in the making – superb.

Roy Keane in his halcyon days at Manure had a great engine but Scott Brown on last night’s showing was turbo-charged. In his post match interview on Sky you could see that his tank was completely empty – brilliant.

Celtic’s depleted attack did reasonably well in the circumstances. If and when the injured players return we can look forward to some great games in this Champions League.
