What did we learn yesterday?

406

There’s a question I have heard over a long time from football people, “What did we learn today?”  It is usually asked by a coach who wants his player(s)  to figure out the change he wants to make.  So what did we learn yesterday?

If any doubt remains that the current Celtic squad are very effective as 3-5-2 and relatively ineffective as 4-2-3-1, it can only be from someone who was on Twitter most of the game.

Gordon Strachan endured some torrid criticisms as Celtic manager.  I am sure this informed his pre-match comments on the “Twitterati’s” verdict on the tactical deployment against Ferencvaros.  Gordon assured us Neil Lennon knows the players better than anyone, especially online fans, and he picked his strongest team to start on Wednesday and again on Sunday.

On any level, this is true.  Neil Lennon knows his squad better than any of us, just has Gordon did in his day.  Both men are also tactically better versed than most of us could ever hope to be.  But the sight of two central defenders making rampaging runs at different times late in the game against Motherwell, surely will convince the final doubters: three at the back, two up front and leave the middle five fluid.

My great uncle Jimmy Delaney made his debut in 1934. Won the Empire Exhibition Trophy in 1938. Signed for Manchester United in 1946. Why are you asking me this AKBW?

Delaneys Dunky, because that’s your handle/name, you use on here.

Anyway, the Bomb went off ages ago, as regards to your Response,

Thirty six minutes, to answer the said questions, that’s how long it

    Very good question posted earlier.

“Do CQNers feel that Sevco supporters will be as disappointed in their team right now as many of our support seem to be with ours?”

    Nah.

I suspect your average Sevco supporters has a confidence level of approx. 105% that this current team is the most magnificent, talented sporting unit this nation has ever seen.

Pride cometh … and all that.

  5. Celtic’s performances this season have been poor in the main. A combination of losing silly goals, slow build up play and pointless posession has been a hard watch and that’s before we discuss 1 up top. it’s easy to see why teams are able to defend well against us. 1 striker vs 3 centrebacks is a hell of an ask.

We have the best players in the league but the system and shape is not making the best of them. I hope that issue is because of issues with player availability and so we will see a change after the international break.

At least 2 up top is need to give defenders more to think about and less time to act on those thoughts.

wingbacks/ wingers that can go beyond the opposition or get the ball into the box early. To many occasions when we recycle the ball with no obvious purpose and end up with same problem I.e. lack of targets to hit up top.

We need a Centreback that can bully and organise the backline and cut out the number of times we leave our centrebacks 1 v 1.

2 of our 3 central midfielders need to be able to get box to box and beyond the ball rather than keep the ball.

One of the main reasons we are easily picked off is because all our posession is in front of teams as soon as a mistake is made or there is a misplaced pass they pounce on it. We should all know by now possession does not equal result.

Well Said StephBhoy67, & I totally agree with your observation/comment.

  8. Sort out our Defence, Sort out our Tactical Formation.

We should not be sloppy & careless @ the Back.

Not sloppy & careless with the ball, in the opposition’s

final third of the pitch. & We should also have more

purpose & penetration in the final third & last but not

least, we should not take any prisoners, with our style

of play, for example side to side, over playing it, too

much pocession, with no meaningful purpose/end result.

It is Goals that Wins matches, not pocession of the ball.

  9. More mischief afoot on CQN than there is on Prankster Weekend on Perversity Island.

    Anyways- fitba talk

    3:5:2 was a no brainer.

But it was a no-brainer when we had Eddy fit and on form and Griff, focused and fit. It is more questionable when both of these are absent.

Ajeti would confess to being not match fit yet but he’s getting there. There was no “unfitness’ issue with Klimala nor was the alternative explanation that he was ‘mistrusted” because the manager did not sign him

Klimala got little chance to acclimatise with the squad becaue of Covid restrictions in March-June period. He got 10 minutes as a sub in the SC game vs Partick thistle and 75 minutes in the next round of the cup vs Clyde. He had not played in an SPFL match until this season started so considering him as any kind of no brainer for a vital CL qualifying tie either as a front 1 or as a pair, is not easy to justify. These guys have to be broken into the team. We have seen disasters like this before. We played Euro debutants Van Dijk and Mouyokolo, both fresh in the door vs Karagandy away and lost 2:0, with both looking like duff buys during that game.

So, I can understand Lenny’s decision to roll the dice with Christie as he was, at least, experienced at that level, but I have to conclude that, while understanding it, it did not impress. any more than it did when Mikey Johnston amd Lewis Morgan tried out as False number 9’s.

In hindsight, we could have played Klimala for over an hour and brought Ajeti on to close out the match. It may not have resulted in a different outcome but our shape and player connections would have suffered less disruption.

After a wee show of defiance versus Well in the first half, I would hope and expect that we have seen the last of this experiment.

It was a failure but some of the criticism was over-personal towards our manager and OTT. I wonder how big Jock would fare on social media nowadays if he fielded Mike Conroy at Centre Half or Roger Hynd at Centre Forward. I wonder if versatile players like Davie Hay, George Connolly, Pat McCluskey or Roy Aitken would get told to stick to the position asigned to you when you were 16 (an age when Willlie Miller of Aberdeen was playing Centre Forward) and stop trying out for another position, as is the case for Kris Ajer.

  10. Adi _ Dassler Not For 2nd Best.

Posession does matter…IMO. end result is a …ahem..result of posession.

    Cant kerp the ball..yer fecked.

Yeah Adi _ Dassler Not For 2nd Best.

However, if we don’t put the ball in the Net, enough times during the

course of a match, then we are also fecked overall result wise.

We need to be “More Direct” in matches, & less pussy footing around.

Goals wins matches, not overall pocession statistics, which does not

win matches, after all we are in a results industry, not a pocessional

play industry, which is a true fact.

  11. Tim Malone Will Tell on

Someone commented earlier about managers/coaches in Scotland, suggesting Jack Ross was probably the pick of the bunch – I would probably agree with that.

In my opinion, the best Scottish manager at the moment is either Alex Neil or Steve Clarke.

    I really should know better.

    Sorry!

  14. Setting The Bears Free.

Yeah, the Karagandy away result was a nightmare, I remember that match in Lenny’s

first spell with us, as the Manager. However, we did manage to over turn that result

back @ CP, & got past them in a CL Qualifier, a few Moons ago. However I do get your

over all point, which you are making. As I’ve said before, the only sensible way for us,

to have any chance, of getting past those so called CL Qualifiers, in future. Is that we

need to have new players bedded in our Team, by the time those types of matches

comes around, @ the very beginning of each Season, no last minute signings, which

makes no sense. Also, we need to take into consideration, all of us, that there are no

mugs/easy matches, regarding those types of fixtures. Because mainly from the 2nd

Qualifier onwards, we are either coming up against Clubs, who are well into the New

Season, or well orginised & well drilled Teams/Clubs. So our attention to detail,

preparation, Team selection, & Tactical Formation has to be spot on, or else we are

all pissing in the wind so to speak, or we are instore for more future disappointment,

as regards to future CL Quallifing Rounds. We can not afford, to aproach those types

of “Key Games” in a Haphazard frame of mind, we need to be really focused & serious

in our aproach, if we want to be successful, in getting through those future CL Quallifing

Rounds. & Also, we need to good slice of Luck as well .

  15. I fully understand mental health issues, but at some point it’s fun’s fun, but get your arse off the pillow.

  16. Big Georges Fan Club - Hail, Hail, Wee Oscar on

Best Scottish Manager? Also like Jack Ross – mixed time at a mixed-up club in Sunderland but seems to have got Hibs really well-organised since his appointment last year – notwithstanding their most recent result versus the Dons.

Clark – excellent at Killie, great experience in England mostly as a No 2, not sure yet re: job for Scotland, which is a bit of a poisoned chalice. Clear he wouldn’t take Celtic job anyway, so probably not even worth a theoretical consideration.

Alex Neil – great job initially at Norwich – promoted then relegated from EPL but not the easiest league in the world to get a small club established in. Seems really well thought of at Preston.

Of the three – probably Alex shades it but not an obvious, barn-door ‘best’ one I think.

In my opinion, I think Lenny, should be given a chance, to finish what he started

grace of God, will become ten, after this Season 2020/21 has ended.

  20. 3 5 2 is indeed our best layout now

Not because it’s the best tactics

    But purely

    1. We don’t have decent left back

    2. We don’t know who our right back is

3 Lennon won’t drop Forrest even though he has been invisible in most games

If we don’t strength and get a decent back 4

Turn oct 17 will be a behind the couch game

We can put money on Forrest not turning up v them

They will just knock ball over our wing Backs

Very few top teams play 3 5 2 for that reason it was found out years ago

Play moi wide left and Forrest wide right and you gift wrap midfield to Sevco. Again !!

If we switch Forrest to the left & put Frimpong to the right drop Elyounussi

he is just basically a typical Southampton player, who blows more cold
