What’s it to you, Charlie?

640

The news yesterday that HMRC would appeal the decision by the First Tier Tribunal (FTT) to reject the part of their tax demand against former club Rangers which was still open to dispute was received by most with passing interest.  The FTT returned a split decision, with the minority view giving HMRC substantial grounds for an appeal, and as we have heard often in recent years, HMRC always pursue tax under various circumstances.  Reasons include when they believe wrongdoing has occurred.

As such, it seemed strange that The Rangers chief executive, Charles Green, issued a statement on the subject yesterday as the on-going tax dispute “will have no affect (sic.) on us”.  He also wrote “in the strongest possible terms to HMRC pointing out the futility of such an appeal”.

If Green expects HMRC to read this letter and to countenance a change of tact he has a regard for his own abilities which are, frankly, a little curious.  No mere mortal could write a letter and bring about any change in such a dispute, which leads us to another question, is Charles Green a mere mortal, or does his aim occasionally stretch beyond his reach?  I’m sure we’re not dealing with a Self-Certified-Superman.

The point to this exercise is that while Green’s newco is not liable for another company’s taxes, his football club inherited the SFA place vacated by Rangers, including pesky football liabilities.  Fifa and SFA rules on paying social taxes are clear – avoid them illegally and face disciplinary action.

As the matter is on-going, the football authorities have yet to issue any disciplinary action for the non-payment of taxes for the five players Rangers conceded to the FTT.  Should the courts ultimately decide in favour of HMRC for the balance of players still being disputed, a fresh wave of disciplinary measures would be due against Green’s club.

Last summer we discussed how the toxicity which was attached to the club Craig Whyte inherited, and then relinquished in a worse state, would make going forward as a Newco with any connection whatsoever to the SFA membership of Oldco very difficult.  Many, including the Blue Knights consortium, concluded it didn’t look viable.

It still doesn’t. Scottish football needs to consider how to deal with the long term consequences of these matters.

being a Shire Bhoy, I have no knowledge of these establishments of which you speak………being more an aficionado of the pubs, clubs and fine dining establishments of Wishy, Murderwell and even occasionally (mainly in the past now though) of Hamilton!

I suspect your guests will want to visit the Grassmarket which is awful but much loved by tourists and the Royal Mile which is slightly better for bars. Good part of the town for your guests. Avoid George Street in the evenings. Full of posers and Hibs players!

Rugby is a great day out. I have had freebies a few times.

It’s a great atmosphere in the city. You will enjoy it.

I would tend to avoid the trendier bars but that is just my preference. Good few bars off George Street for the rugger crowd the guys will enjoy. The Queen’s Arms and the Thistle bar are pretty good. Rose Street is usually a good place for drinking for the rugby too. Avoid the Standing Order on George Street. Usually packed and a nightmare to get served.

Gordon Strachan makes SB captain shortly after comforting Sevco that they will still get players selected… Oh dear still bending over to his bosses.

    • Paddy started the 2-0 win H v St Johnstone on 26/12 (dreadful performance won with 2 goals in injury time) by which time Paddy was already off.

    • He started the next and scored the only goal H v Motherwell 3 days later, playing 90 mins.

    • He then starred as a midfield work horse in the Sammi 2 DeadCo 0 game on 2nd Jan, again playing 90 mins.

    • Another 90 mins followed in the 2-0 win vs Berwick in the cup, a scrappy dull affair, on 9th Jan.

    • 4 90mins in a row was completed on 12th Jan A Hamilton when we were cheated by the linesman and relied on a stokes pen to scrape a 1-1.

    • He started the next against Hibs A in a good 3-0, but was subbed on 15th Jan.

    • And finally started H Aberdeen in a scrappy 1-0 win on 22nd Jan, again being subbed.

So 7 starts in 27 days. He has never started 2 games consecutively since.

This was Paddy’s golden run and for a month he was a first choice. He appeared as a sub in the next 3 games, all wins, and was then not available for the cup game away to the DeadCo (2-2) and didn’t appear again until 5th March as a sub.

The whole notion of 3rd division players being selected for Svotland is purely designed to get the Hun pound for the SFA. I always found WGS far too willing to be told what to do.

Well documented is my fairly low regard / estimation of both SB and WGS so Im less than inspired by today’s announcement.

Paddy’s run in the team around the turn of year 2010/11 ended when both Samaras and Ki came back for the cup game A vs DeadCo on 6th Feb. He featured rarely after that, or indeed since.

From 27th Nov to the end of that season Maloney started 1 game.
