When even Jim Farry blocked a royal postponement

740

25 years ago, Scotland were due to play a World Cup qualification game against Belarus on the day of Princess Diana’s funeral.  The SFA, then run by chief exec Jim Farry, the same man who was eventually removed from office for delaying Celtic’s registration of Jorge Cadete, decided the game should proceed as planned.

Whatever you think of Farry, he acted without concern for the royalist contingent.  Despite the SFA’s offices being vandalised and Scottish Secretary, Donald Dewer, applying political pressure, Farry dug in:   ”We have taken heed of the various viewpoints, but let’s be reasonable about this, life does and must go on.”

He did not act alone, the SFA International Committee were involved, and they included Celtic’s Jack McGinn, and the Greatest Football Administrator the world has ever known, Campbell Ogilvie!  This was a strange time in Britain, maybe the strangest few weeks of the last century.

Royalists were split between backers of the self-styled Queen of Hearts (honestly), and those in the minority, who sided with the actual Queen.  The Queen, a bit like Farry, held out as long as she could against the indulgent wallowing infecting millions, by resisting calls to lower flags to half-mast.

Before the end of the week, royal flags were lowered and the Scotland game was postponed.  Those of us who never took an interest in royalty were often heard saying “Let’s be reasonable about this”, but were largely ignored.

    GFTB,

    Respectfully…

If one don’t really mean the words one is singing ….

    …. Why sing them?

Today I’ve had a busy day on CQN – from time to time I have had an alternative view from our Editor Paul67

Historically about Peter Lawwell, today, about not reading the room about the Queens death – IMHO

BUT I am grateful for this blog – without it my day would be much less interesting.

  4. As a mark of respect to the royal family we should end the season now. Oh look we’ve won the league

I think it’s just a wee dig at what some Celtic fans sing home or away … but a very strange comment to personalise a daft chant that has been sung for all of my lifetime .. whether people agree or not .. I think FTQ or FTK will be about the establishment and not wee Lizzie or Charlie the turd

Maybe QF might think the next time this ditty might ring out he will be on claiming Celtic fans want to do the same to Charlie as QF posted at 9.04pm tonight

That’s a sick mind in my opinion

I will leave it there tonight …

Shakhtar & wee Maryann Shved should be our thoughts … still think Brendan didn’t give him a run, maybe Brendan done it because of that nasty Peter Lawell bought us a champions league goakscorer withouts Brendan’s permission :-)

    Just another winger CSC

    Just a thought 🍀

  6. The exile tim

And singing why don’t you go home is ok because you’re not the person forcibly repatriating. Sorry – don’t buy that !!

QF – Don’t buy your squirrel CFC

  7. B2B 9.56pm

So every song sung by any fans … you really think people will go out and do the actions they sing about ?

    Ok then

So when every fan sing “f** the police” you think fans are going to do what QF stated at 9.04pm or yourself at 9.56pm

Anyhow … if that’s what you believe no point in me trying to make you change your mind :-)

Going by your post … you should only sing a song if your going to perform the actions of what your singing

Good luck with that … and check the words before you sing your next song

  8. Loving the serious debate on FF about Tuesdays game being cancelled. Apparently it’s because of police cover that it needs cancelled.

The queen will be lying in stare at St Giles in Edinburgh so police will be too stretched.

A few staunch are saying no way we should play until ‘Her Excellent Majesty and greatest woman ever to have lived’ ( literal copy ) is laid to rest.

    Clutching at straws methinks.

Napoli seem to bring a pretty large and brutal support also which might just upset their attempt to totally turn into a Union Jack fest.

Talk of drowning out the champs league theme with God save the Queen / king. Sounds like a great plan until Napoli’s 3rd goal let’s them all home early.

Wouldn’t worry too much about being assailed by the likes of James “Galtieri” Forrest neo fascist apologist extraordinaire. And also it has to be said, from among stiff competition on here, flouncer number one. Wouldn’t surprise me if he stopped reading his own blog, everybody else has.

  10. Had mostly a busy day so didn’t watch the ceremonies.

Now I have caught the news someone on here worries about how Celtic support might post on a blog.

    Reading the room the BBC

The day went from quite sombre to one of elation when king Charles met the people.

High fives. Zippy de do das and a David Brent sized dose of did I telll you about my promotion followed.

As an aside nothing says dignified remeberance like turning up at a church service in jeans and trainers

I did like the Catholic lite Anglican vibe though

  11. Billy

    Aye Willie.

I won’t be able to do that there God save the king song

    How naw Willie.

Well see I don’t know the words.

  12. Great to see young Caspar Ruud on the brink of reaching the US Open Final.

Hopefully he can get over the finish line against his Russian opponent.

I had the pleasure of meeting him earlier this year at Queens Club where he took his defeat in good grace when he was eliminated in first round and jokingly said grass was for golf not tennis and he preferred golf anyway but had played tennis like golf that day.

Apparently he is a low handicap golfer too but a really modest young man.

  13. QF 10.22pm

Mate your preaching to the wrong person there, my in-laws all follow follow any team that will cheat their queen and play out of Ibrox mate … am surrounded by them … I only took umbrage about you saying about Celtic fans at 9.04pm .. which in my opinion was wrong, in fact pretty disgusting …

I know how the Huns feel… to try and turn it into a Celtic fans thing was either clumsy or meant …

Only your good self will know … if. It posted fir a whole why not concentrate on Donetsk on Tuesday or Madrid last week …

If you really think your 9.04pm post stands up, fair play, am entitled to think it’s pure shoite

Hope we get at least a point, maybe 3pts on Tuesday :-)

  14. Is that there mourning virus spreading like a pandemic. Is there a vaccine ?

Why on earth doed the French President do a TV address “simply the queen” weirdo.

Germany lights up the Brandenburg gate with a union jack. Maybe that’s ok with her being a German royal house.

Then the two old Canadian men greeting when interviewed. Weirdo weirdos.

I hope no other world leader goes anytime soon. The world is going to stop turning.

  16. GFTB

I think we MUST get at least a point if we have any desire to be in ANY European comp post Xmas.

Failure to get a point would leave us with a double header v a likely rejuvenated Leipzig before Shakhtar at home. That would be a disaster for us. It could mean going into game 5 on zero points. A point would at least mean beating shakhtar at at home would give us the head to head on 4 points v them at least. I am really nervous about how Leipzig respond to their new coach.

I am hoping for a win Wednesday but would settle for a draw. Just glad to be getting away to Warsaw for a few days and away from all this wall to wall nonsense we will be having here.

  17. Saint Stivs

That nonsense really does amaze me.

I am not sure we would be making a big thing of the king of Norway or Sweden or Spain died ?

Odd how the UK monarchy seems to see itself as such a big deal. Indeed why others seem to see it as a big deal.

  18. Burnley78 10.57pm

Totally agree .. another lose would make it difficult, but a point keeps us in it, Leipzig isn’t going to be easy but 4pts in the double header will hopefully leave them on 1pt (against us) after 4 games … stay in the competition and give ourselves a chance … 3pts on Tuesday would be tremendous but 1pt keeps us in the game …

Enjoy Warsaw … so jealous … as I have posted on here before my only trip away was Ekeren, probably the best 3 days (football wise) of my life … £55 on Phil Cole’s bus (ticket included) .. wee wummin in Ekeren offering food and toilet facilities and their public fitba parks were like bowling greens … ..

Bring back a point or 3 and have a great trip 🍀

  19. Extraordinary that the wall to wall coverage of the legacy of the queen does not include that troops in her name gunned down innocent ‘British’ citizens in her name. I accept that she had little or no input in the events of Bloody Sunday, but the glossing over of that atrocity while lamenting the of murder of undid Mountbatten does tend to stick in the throat, not just of us of Irish stock, but those who had to endure Partition. To my mind she was relatively benign and I do not celebrate her passing. Unfortunately, British zealots do not much encouragement to flout their brand of Nationalism

  20. B78.

You been to Warsaw before ? Brilliant architecture. Big corporate real estate presence there. I enjoyed it.

Although legia fans I worked with got all kinda huffy with me.
