Delighted for Wales last night but what’s happened to Jason Denayer? Since ending his loan period at Celtic a year ago he’s made 15 starts for Galatasaray. He was hooked on four of those occasions, which is a high percentage substituted for a defender. Gala won their first four league games with Jason in the team but won only once in his final 10 appearances. The point was made to me last night that he looked overweight.
In his 12 months at Celtic he polished his rough edges and established himself as a top performer in the most effective defence we’ve had in years. Manchester City were not prepared to let him return to Celtic as the reckoned he simply wasn’t being stretched.
He signed a new contract at Man City before heading for Turkey, but their new management team are unlikely to promote him to their first team squad. He’s unlikely to have impressed anyone at the Euros and Galatasaray won’t be as keen as Celtic were to have him back.
Is it possible we’re the only ones who know what he’s capable of? I’d have him back tomorrow.

Denanyer,was OK when he played for us,but as someone mentioned, big Virgil kept him right,as for Denanyer,some wanting him back wearing the hoops,nope,was struggling last night,As for Robson_KANU,might be out of our price range,same for Joe Allen.

Denayer looked like a more rotund and less mobile player than the guy who adorned the hoops.
He was amateurish last night and a huge part of the reason Belgium are out.
Defenders are given the simple remit of staying goal side of opponent . He never did.
He was constantly Ballwatching and showed zero awareness.
Not surprised his team in Turkey failed to win the last 10 games he appeared in.

Tend to agree. Thought praise was a tad overdone. A very good player no doubt but not a fully formed defender….yet (to give him the benefit of the doubt) Still fairly inexperienced right enough and I don’t think continual movement from club to club is a benefit.

I can’t agree with this talk that Denayer was part of Celtic’s most effective defence in years.
The amount of league goals conceded was impressively low I grant you, but how “effective”‘was this defence against moderate European opposition?
3 goals shipped at home to Salzburg, 5 lost over 2 games to them.
Unable to stop the mighty Maribor and Astra from scoring in four attempts.
4 goals shipped in Zagreb. 6 conceded in 2 games to Legia Warsaw. Another 3 goals lost at home to inter Milan.
Not to mention Craig Gordon’s heroics in the Europa league that season.
So not even close to being our most effective defence in years. Look beyond the SPFL goals conceded column because in Europe, against less than top drawer opposition, the Celtic defence of 2014/15 was a porous sieve.
Amazing that Ronny’s legacy sees us just as animated about who goes out than who is coming in.
Be nice to think that we could generate enough from the outgoings to afford Joe Allen – how much for Biton, Johansen, Ambrose, Cifti?; respectively, £4m, £3m, £1.5m and £.5m – Total £9m, that should do it.

Anyone watching Denayer last night will be reminded of our general defensive shambles in the European games he played. Not all his fault, but not covered in glory.
Not sure if he put on weight or just reached his full adult size. It seems to me Belgian fitness guys will be at least as advanced as ours and they were happy to select him.
Not going to buy into his ‘ reported comments’ about Scottish fitba.
Overall, he is a decent player and I’m not bothered if he returns or not. Either way he is not anywhere near the finished player we need now.
We really need the finished player in that role now.
Or, why not just develop the bhoys we already have?!
For all the hype about other potential signings: Duffy and Joe Allen are decent players but both prone to making the type of defensive or distribution errors that our existing players get slaughtered for. The Belgian goal was a direct result of Joe A passing straight to an opponent in a crucial area…
Brendan has a tough job moulding a team from existing squad and making the right additions.
He will need good judgement and good luck and a patient support.
Right now Patience is thin on the ground in these parts.

I understand from attributed quotes that Jason said defending in the SPL was easy compared to other leagues. I cannot say that I would argue with that as an opinion and he is at least able to say it from experience.
Why would he come back to a league where he would not improve as a player? So that should close that avenue down.
I mentioned last night about the poor quality of player in the Scottish squad which in turn reflects the standard of SPL player. Would anyone here argue that the quality of our opposition has weakened over the last few years, and I am not saying that with any reference to the Manky Mob. I have freinds who watch them and tell me that their own standard of player is awful in comparison to 5 years ago.
Brendan Rogers will have to be a terrific salesman or have a hidden stash of cash to persuade established international players to sign on at Celtic Park.
It will come as no surprise to many on here that there is a class of player at Celtic Park who will win the SPL comfortably. I cannot see any reason to assume we have improved our squad above that level as of today. Please note I say “assume” , the new signing could be a wonderful player but at 19 and available, we have bought potential.
I remember the way that a poor Inter Milan side had us chasing shadows as our players failed to adapt to a different way of playing football. There is a gulf between SPL and Europa League and a further chasm to the CL.
We, the support, will need to be patient and understanding of our place in European football. I really hope that BR can work the players into a way of playing that entertains us and still takes us into the Europa League at least. A tall order and one that I hope will not be seen as failure.
The usual muppets will be waiting to pillory our club if we fail to qualify for the CL in August: we will need to stay strong and together.
Tonight we will watch players from Italy and Germany who are two levels above our squad who are paid by clubs smaller than Celtic FC: that is a pity but it is one of the facts of modern day football where TV and sponsors mean more to the patrons of the people’s sport than supporters.

I never believe in trying to be concerned about things outside my area of influence, Celtic FC cannot change the dynamic of today’s football finances outside of Scotland. They can only win well at home and then show Europe that Scotland is home to a force in the game. Let’s focus on what we can influence and then see where it takes us.
There is a fan led feeling that the money is talking too loudly in football, the English failure last week is a recent example and the attendances for the next England matches will be interesting.
I do see a time in the next five years (?) where the changes needed to the CL will see a benefit to teams like Porto, PSV, Ajax and Celtic. Perhaps that is just me dreaming again, who knows?
First change I would make is make the semi finals a one off game played at a neutral venue. The suits will never have it as that would mean two less all expenses paid nights in a lovely hotel so that boat will probably not float, but it would be a start.
Right off to Vigil Mass soon and then a nice dinner and a couple of beers before the game, apologies for the long post, I need to shave again now.

Don’t know if someone has already commented on Craig Bellamy’s article in the Times through the week. He said that the England players were infected by a kind of collective panic against Iceland. He compared it to Celtic’s last game of the season at Motherwell where a win was essential. According to Craig, with about ten minutes to go the whole team became aware of the enormity which would follow a draw or a defeat. and they were paralysed by fear.
