Withering in the vine, sin and orange

633

At 21-years-old Tom Rogic should be strongly staking his claim for a central midfield berth at Celtic.  The fact that he’s not is a disappointment to the player, and apparently the nation of Australia.  It’s also a disappointment to you and me.  He has the physique and the passing ability but after some tentatively positive performances last season he hasn’t kicked on as hoped.

There could be lots of reasons for this, it’s not necessarily the ‘fault’ of the player, his ability or the club, but football careers wither on the vine when clubs hoard talent.  If Tom can get some game-time under his belt at Melbourne Victory, and potentially get to Brazil in the summer, we will have a better indication if he is the real deal.

Someone just text me, “Rangers need to be a long-term sustainable business and that’s the bottom line.  The club needs to change”, from that memorable Craig Whyte interview to The Scotsman in 2012. Groundhog Day….

So Fifa presidential candidate, Jerome Champagne, has proposed the introduction of a sin-bin, to be invoked by the referee brandishing an orange card.  What’s your view on this, is there a universal association between sin and orange, or is this another subversive plot by Celtic fans? I have my suspicions.

my issue is the time it takes for corners, free kicks, goal kicks etc. Currently you are lucky if you get 25mins ball in play

  2. John Kean – Celtic hero…stopped the bank in its tracks, bought time

Fergus McCann – Celtic hero…brought investment and a worked out 5 year plan

No need for a better than, more important than, bigger Celtic man discussion at all.

They got together, respected each other and MADE IT WORK!

    Gene,

Ref adds 1,2 or 3 mins on at the end, depending on level of stoppages during the game.

Then watch stops every time the ball goes out of play from 85 mins. Or somert to that effect ;)

    ——————————————————————–

If Celtic are winning narrowly there will be at least 4 minutes of time added on, if they are loosing narrowly there will be as little as the Ref thinks he can possibly get away with.

If they are winning handsomely he’ll decide whether it will annoy Celtic more to be kept out in the cold and wet, or if they are enjoying the game too much and adjust accordingly.

If Celtic are being badly beaten a maximum allowable amount of time will be added on to stretch out the pain for as long as possible, if Celtic score and look as though some momentum may be being built he will stop play immediately, even a minute or two early if needs be.

Taken from the Dullerchie school of refereeing:-)

  4. Genes, he would be miked up to the ref and would attend the same ludge.

They would all shake hands before the game and we would be in the same position as now.

Joking aside, I know what you mean, it is too subjective and changes from one week to the next.

Each sub should add 30 seconds, you can get 2 minutes added in a game with 6 subs used.

  5. gene’s a …..

Thank god…someone to step on my soapbox! Bore my nearest and dearest to distraction on this subject.

Free kicks…aarrggghhhh! Ref stands on the ball, shows the whistle to the kicker, looks at the wall, steps away from the ball, shows the whistle AGAIN, marches out the 10, stands behind the wall waiting for it to move, once in position points to encourage the wall to stay still, shows the whistle AGAIN, gets himself into position then at last, finally blows the whistle….

And Chas Mulgrew … love you to bits…but those beedin socks!!!!!

  6. Regards Fergus McCann………….

I will forever be grateful to the wee mhan for what he did.

Fergus had a comfortable life in North America. He did not need to get involved in Celtic. He did so , for me, out of an emotional attatchment and love for our Club.

Fergus staked over £9m in Celtic and for me that is putting your money where your mouth is big style!!!

Fergus built a 60k seater stadium when most scoffed. He stood up to the SFA on our behalf.

To me he will always be a hero!

Overlooked a bit in the whole situation is the work and monies sank in by John Keane & David Low.

Low did the research, realised the perilous situation we were in and approached Fergus.

Fergus liked the plan to buy shares from the existing shareholders but refused to countenance buying the old boards shares. ‘ they won’t get one thin dime from me’

It was Low who ran round the world snapping up shares financed by John Kean.

IMO another 2 heroes worthy of the recognition along with Fergus.

    Thank God for them

In recalling the events of 1994 don’t forget Brian Dempsey’s contribution.

He was instrumental in galvanising the smaller shareholders and acquiring enough of their proxy votes to challenge and ultimately defeat the old board. I don’t think history has been kind to him in that respect.

  15. Jimbo67, I think you could come up with a fair few names who would fit that bill.

But remember Taits last game when he tried to add time to advantage Deadco, see how that worked out, still makes me laugh.

The MSM seem to think “Rangers” in the top league would be challenging us. Yes, that’s the team who struggle to beat teams of tradesmen. They seem to forget that “Rangers” have not run on a sustainable basis for nearly thirty years, and that all the success they had was based on debt and tax dodges. It will be like the John Greig years.

Those two Hearts games – and indeed the SFA refs’ committee’s decision to appoint him for Rangers’ last home game of that same season- remain the clearest examples of bias against Celtic I can think of in my lifetime ( born 1961).

Brian Dempsey gets airbrushed from the history of the Celtic revisionists on here unfortunately.

He did more good than bad when we look at it objectively.

His biggest mistake was to have a vested interest in moving Celtic to a development site in Robroyston,in which I think he had a vested interest.

Obviously the Bunnet couldn’t work with BD….and he walked / was pushed.

I’m glad Fergus had the vision to refurbish our spiritual home instead of the other options at the time.I thank him for listening to the fans on this issue.

  20. Jimbo67, it did, and it was a wonder to behold.

Don’t really know enough about David to comment fully but I know enough to say I know he contributed. As did Brian, they both had a role to play. So too did Fergus and John. In fact we all had a role to play. Collectively “The Rebels have won” as Brian said and our history is in tact, unlike some other Club.

I now live in Canada, and am a member of the John Thomson Memorial Club in Brantford Canada. The Huns in Rosyth started calling Inverkeithing “the divet” simply because they couldn’t spell Inverkeithing, no offense to divet boy! Can anyone send me Nan’s video clip

The referee in that game at Tynecastle in spring 1998 was a certain Bobby Tait. Not many stoppages in the game at all and if I recall rightly Celtic had 2 goals disallowed and Brattbakk missed a couple of sitters. Yet Tait added on shedloads of injury time until Hertz equalised.

Tait had also been ref at the previous Celtic-Hertz game at Celtic Park in December 1997. Hertz were top of the league, Celtic just behind, and Celtic were pounding their goal for most of the game. Despite a lengthy stoppage when Stephane Mahe was stretchered off injured Tait blew for full time right on 90 minutes enabling Hertz to escape with a 0-0 draw. I don`t believe Jim Jefferies mentioned the referee after the game (for a change).

  31. Jeez_I_Thought_Blinker_was_pants

It was Tait. Two months later he did not play a second of injury time in either half when we again faced the JTs despite two lengthy stoppages ( one for a serious injury to Mahe).
