Withering in the vine, sin and orange

633

At 21-years-old Tom Rogic should be strongly staking his claim for a central midfield berth at Celtic.  The fact that he’s not is a disappointment to the player, and apparently the nation of Australia.  It’s also a disappointment to you and me.  He has the physique and the passing ability but after some tentatively positive performances last season he hasn’t kicked on as hoped.

There could be lots of reasons for this, it’s not necessarily the ‘fault’ of the player, his ability or the club, but football careers wither on the vine when clubs hoard talent.  If Tom can get some game-time under his belt at Melbourne Victory, and potentially get to Brazil in the summer, we will have a better indication if he is the real deal.

Someone just text me, “Rangers need to be a long-term sustainable business and that’s the bottom line.  The club needs to change”, from that memorable Craig Whyte interview to The Scotsman in 2012. Groundhog Day….

So Fifa presidential candidate, Jerome Champagne, has proposed the introduction of a sin-bin, to be invoked by the referee brandishing an orange card.  What’s your view on this, is there a universal association between sin and orange, or is this another subversive plot by Celtic fans? I have my suspicions.

  2. Cowiebhoy,

    I think you’re right.

Gerard Wiesfield would not have let Celtic go to the wall for the sake of an overdraft which was small compared to his overall wealth.

He wasn’t a massive football fan but his wife was a fanatical Hoop and he listened to her.

When Fergus appeared he didn’t need to get involved but he would have done if required.

His wife’s son is still on the board.

“Davie Syme (another hunnic cheat) referred to this policy in the Evening Times when he retired from refereeing 2 weeks prematurely in 1994 or thereabouts – he had also wanted to finish up at Ibrox but was given a lower league game instead.”

They obviously didn’t want a rerun of the Tait / Kilmarnock 1998 fiasco…

Click on my link and if you type Ally Mitchell v Rangers in the search bar, then you will see the goal at 50 seconds.

Added bonus you will hear Jim Shyte’s commentary as McCoist and Laudrup miss sitters.

There have been many referees who favoured Celtic, it wasn’t just the Deadly Bears who got decisions.

You’ll all recall we got a throw in at Hampden when Big Roy stole the decision resulting in Joe Miller’s goal?

There was a corner one time at Fir Park too.

Now my Auld Da has similar views to you on Fergus, thinks it unforgivable he walked away with £45m, with a statement if he got £50m from sale he would donate £1m for a new training centre.

From memory there was another reported interested in buying us, some Hun builder who claimed his grandfather played for us, JB Bennett ? Was it, from the Kilsyth area ?

Now there may have been more ?

PS – Fergus did put his money where his mouth was, Thanks Fergus

“SFTB – The bold Reginald in that team would give “journeymen” a bad name”

Have to agree that Reggi was clearly not good enough and the Di Canio swap deal ranks as the worst bargain since Gillingham swapped a set of tracksuits for Tony Cascarino. Lovely tracksuits they were.

The point I was making re journeymen in 99 was that we had Larsson and Reiper and Lambert in addition to solid pros like Boyd, Mcnamara, Burley, and Stubbs. Fergus had gradually improved the quality of our playing side from the times of Gary Gillespie, Stuart Slater, Justin Whittle, Andy Payton, Gary Holt, Carl Muggleton and Wayne Biggins.

But I will accept placing Blinker in the section below journeymen and I’d only really put Johnny Gould & Darren Jackson from the team list solidly in the journeyman category.

    Team was:-

    Jonathan Gould

    Marc Rieper

    Jackie McNamara

    Alan Stubbs

    Tommy Boyd

    Stephane Mahe

    Paul Lambert

    Craig Burley

The lawyers were assembled at this bench.

The judge asked the first one ..”And who are you?”

Lawyer: “Your Honour….l represent What Every Woman Wants”

  16. 12 targets 11 to go were are they.i celtic are good at spinning , I bet there is no more players coming in this transfer window, but it will be the usual patter,we tried to sign,a, b,c right up to the last minute ,

  18. I see a few bhoys discussing Bobby Tait and the Kilmarnock game , I worked with Jim Loughlan the Killie centre half , his mum and dad are Celtic ST holders and he told me it was the sweetest thing ever when they beat them that day , he said hes never seen a ground empty so quickly and it was a lovely sight .

  19. I was in the Elcho bar the day Bobby Taits refereeing came back to bite him on the arse. Had my 30th birthday party the day before so was half canned when Ally Mitchell scored. What a great couple of days and then Craig Falconbridge equalised for Dunfermline. I will never forget that name. But I suppose it made it all the sweeter to win it the following week at Celtic Park.

He also told me about when he scored against us at CP , he said his parents were jumping about the north stand and everyone round them knew who they were , he also added it turned out alright as Berkovic scored twice in a 4-2 win.

  24. the glorious balance sheet on

Badabing 2131 – I also saw Syme coming out of that scummy wee 20 Club in Cathcart Rd Rutherglen steaming drunk when he was a ref. No doubt he had worked his way there after starting off in the Quarry Bar.

The SFA were well aware of his drinking habits and the type of establishments he frequented – he once turned up steaming drunk to referee a game at Easter Road in 1988.

Of course none of this stopped the SFA from giving him Celtic and Rangers games in which to go through his routine of honest mistakes……

  27. Re the refs picking their valedictory fixture – the actual term used was “affinity match” and the ultimate execution of same was by Bro Hugh Dallas at Fir Park, 2005 when he managed to assist both his clubs.
