Every year we ask you to put your hand in your pocket for various causes and every year you react, but never more so than 2012. You responded magnificently to the Wee Oscar Appeal, which from Celtic fans in total raised £31k in a bucket collection in September and £27k at a race night last month.
It is breath-taking to see the work done by those who, without thought for their personal sacrifices, decided this young boy would get the best chance possible. The photographs of Oscar are an inspiration, but the work done by those who staged the race night and bucket collection – and brought a new CQN badge to life – is even more inspiring.
The events surrounding the charity golf day raised four-figure sums for Oscar, the Neuroblastoma Alliance, the Martin Chambers Ecuador Trust and The Haven in Blantyre, which supports people with life limiting illness. There were smaller donations too, each one a credit to the organisers and to those of you who contributed.
The overwhelming majority of this work, and pretty much all donations, are made by people who don’t want any thanks and would be horrified by publicity. In most instances the beneficiaries will never know their names. I’m in the really fortunate position that I get to see a lot of this happen and I can assure you it is awe inspiring. You are in the company of many great Celts.
This club is not Neil Lennon’s or Dermot Desmond’s, it’s yours. Celtic will win and lose many games but that will change nothing that is really important. You are the person who will make it a unique force for good in the world. That is our challenge for 2013.
Thank you for all your help, take care and have an absolutely fantastic Christmas.

Happy Christmas to everyone on CQN and once again to Paul67 for the gift of this tremendous blog where we find a meeting place to have our say on all things Celtic and to be entertained and educated by some of the brightest football supporters on the Internet.
I hope you and your families have a great day tomorrow.
Happy Christmas!

I love your positivity about Celtic, I never knew anything about what had happened. I sense this is the hardest time.
I don’t need to tell ya that this CQN town will make you smile and cherish her more through Words and amazing youtube links, they may even be by Simply Red (tarrant) ;).
Celtic really are ready to really compete in Europe again, our defence is rock solid and our counter attacking is going to get a lot better (it was already pretty good). We have loads of improvements to improve on as well. Who knows we may be able to pay for the dearer prospects soon. :))))))))))))))))))))))))
Celtic Mac.
I’ll see you when you come up,I’ve been up all night and it’s bed time for me,went to Asda at 1.45am,and couldn’t get to sleep when I went to bed.

I laugh at some of the places the hoops show up at, like the guy in the crowd ( USA )who caught the home run baseball and took applause with the famous top on.
My favourite one was about 20 years ago when the late Jill Dando was doing the holiday program on BBC. She climbed up through the inside of a mountain which led to an ancient monastry (Greece or Turkey). After enduring an exhausting trek the presenter told us that the monastry was usually empty because it was difficult to reach. The TV camera lit up the dark cloister to reveal a guy sitting with the hoops on.
Living in England I talk football to supporters of many different clubs and a lot do charity raising but it does not come close to the amazing work that the Celtic fans achieve… I might be a bit biased though…
Merry Christmas to all of you.

As with stephbhoy, I’m very sad to hear of your loss.
CQN is a brilliant place to get your life back on track or back to as normal as possible.

I am not sure that Auldheid would get the accolade of ‘poster of the year’ for any one of his incisive posts, though some of them have been special.
There have been over the year some genuinely brilliant contributions by CQN’s resident wordsmiths, whose modesty I will protect lest they get carried away.
Suffice to say that some of their input was entertaining, informative & at times very moving.
Where I will agree, is that Auldheid has been the hardest working & most productive poster on CQN. He is like a terrier at a bone as he tries to make others care as much about the obvious injustices being tolerated & ignored in our game as he does.
The rest of us make our complaints & then move on.
Auldheid has tenaciously demanded answers & some concrete sort of response.
I am certain that his efforts will eventually bear fruit.
Whether they do or not, I join you in saluting what GG would call his ‘indefatigability’ & I thank him for his efforts.

Jimmy Smith was certainly one that got away unfortunately. As I recall Jock gave him a “trial” (in 1975 or 1976)and I think he turned out in a reserve game. Sadly, it never worked out due to his knee problem.
Rangers (1872/73-2012) signed two Smiths on the same day in August 1966. As you say, Dave was signed from Aberdeen for £45000 and they also signed Alex, from Dunfermline for £55000. I don’t know about the strong rumour they were actually after young Jimmy from Aberdeen however it has to be said Dave Smith was a class player and not in the Sammy Baird, Harold Davis, John Greig mould at all.
His brother Doug played for years for Dundee United and only recenly passed away.
Perhaps they were trying to replace Baxter who had left the previous year for Sunderland.
Anyway, both Smith’s only had to wait 10 days before appearing in their first derby fixture, a Glasgow Cup tie at Ibrox, and were on the wrong end of a 0-4 scoreline (including a Bobby Lennox hat-trick).
I have a clear recollection of that warm August evening.
The biggest crowd that I ever saw inside Ibrox.
As kick off time approaches there is a seething mass of Celtic supporters swaying from side to side as thousands desperately try and inch their way towards the turnstyles. There is a solitary mounted policeman attempting, against all the odds, to bring some order to the crowd. There is the police horse who shall we say “gets caught short” in the midst of the seething Celtic support.
As if by magic, the area around the horse clears and the supporters push back from the torrent still gushing from the poor beast.
One suited up Celtic supporter, at the edge of the “abyss”, loses his footing and slides helplessly into the horses “d’ouvres”.
Completely ruined his suit I am sure however maybe it was lucky omen.
We did win 4-0 at Ibrox after all.
