I didn’t realise until this morning that the assault on Lukasz Zaluska’s assault by two premiership footballers was so serious as to have the player lying unconscious on the ground for several minutes. The Celtic player was out in Glasgow with his wife Sunday night before the incident.
Lukasz was singled-out for online abuse by two Dundee United players in August, one from Poland, one Scottish-born player who has represented Northern Ireland, after the Legia Warsaw Champions League qualifier. The Polish player subsequently took to Twitter to campaign for Legia’s punishment for fielding a suspended player against Celtic to be reduced.
The stories I could tell about various footballers would fill more than a few volumes, but all of the tales I’ve heard about Lukasz are that he is a polite, generous, player who repeatedly puts himself out to help Celtic fans and Poles living here. Very best wishes to the big guy, I hope we see him back soon.

Mick, where’s the club in Mornington? I’ve a pal that lives there, who I met up with a few weeks ago in Melbourne. Don’t think he knows about it.
WDH, I got the link you sent me via blantyretim but couldn’t open it as I’m not on facebook. Can you email me directly at acgr@hotmail.co.uk. Fanx
Corky, hope all goes well for you, your daughter and family on Thursday, the sun will be shining on you all.
Jude, 47 years, WOW. Congratulations.
Thoughts with the Lustig family and their little one.
The DR are a disgusting excuse of a news media outlet. Their crass attempt at humour over the LZ assault is disgraceful. Celtic should stop fannying around and simply ban this rag from Celtic Park. It’s an insult to visit CP and see my club advertise this excuse for a newspaper on the pitch side boards. Give them their judas money back and tell them to GTF.

Good Morning All.
First of all I hope all goes well for Weefra this morning, I’m sure it will.
Second the reduction in circulation currently being suffered by the Daily Record is chronic. It has become a chronic paper with little or no purpose although some good people work there. Unless it hires some proper journalists and gives itself a shake editorially then it is on a slide into oblivion and everyone knows it.
Third – This is a great day to be a Celtic Fan, Tomorrow we go into a European tie and if we win we will have played three in Europe without defeat and have put us in with a real chance of progression in the tournament.
Nothing makes a footballer walk taller and broaden’s the shoulders like success and a bit of confidence.
I went to sleep last night thinking of what Hamilton Tim was saying on the blog about punching above our weight in the top tier in Europe. Much of our recent success came about because of the attitude between the ears of the players and the management.
Our team believed they were capable of beating anyone at Celtic Park given the chance, and possibly more importantly so called bigger teams, bigger players with bigger reputations all knew and believed that Celtic Park was a place where they and their reputations could be taken down.
Remember that one Spanish Football Magazine described Celtic Park as the greatest home advantage in modern sport and a place where the inexplicable could happen and frequently did.
It is time for that to happen again.
We should take a leaf out of Chelsea’s book, play to our utmost strength and really go to town against Astra if it is possible.
Send out a signal that we are a Champion’s league team playing in the Europa league and that we are capable of respecting but overwhelming inferior opposition. Let everyone in the competition – in our group and others – that we are to be feared and respected and that we are a different proposition to the team that toiled against Legia and Maribor.
Turn a corner Celtic and cause an eyebrow to be raised across Europe.

BMCUW- I didn’t read it too closely, but the plc have taken this on the chin for decades, maybe the ad revenue is too much to lose? Shame.
Offski for beer.

BRTH,
Ole Jose mentioned yesterday morning that Maribor were to be reckoned with as they had won at Celtic Park.

Celtic should know by now that they get nothing in return from that rag in particular.
IMO,stop dealing with them.
No adverts from them at the ground, none from us in their pages,no interviews,no press conferences.
What are they gonna do? Treat us even more contemptuously?
F..k them,and f..k their cherished demographic.
I see the SMSM / pundits are continuing to pursue their agenda-based criticism of our manager ……. Bless them, and all those so-called Celtic fans who give them ammunition…..

All the best this morning. Will be thinking of you.
Very disappointed in Jackie Manamara coming out citing Paul Paton as an example for other young DUFC to follow. The timing of this stinks imo. Poor show from a great Celtic man.
BRTH –
Take a look at these CL results:
Chelsea 6 Maribor 0
Roma 1 Bayern 7
Bate 0 Shakhtar 7
I will be at Celtic Park tomorrow cheering on the bhoys, but if Celtic win 5, 6 or 7 nil, do you really believe anyone in Europe will bat an eyelid?
We are not “a Chapions League team playing in the Europa League”.
We are exactly where we deserve to be and after last night’s results, I am happy with that.
I hope we beat Astra 6-0 and go on to win the group. It is well within our capabilities, but let’s not delude ourselves. The teams who occupy the Champions League will afford us nary a sideways glance, until we are in their company once again.
Following Legia and Maribor, our European stock is rock bottom. That is the sad reality.
Re. Scummy rags.
Don’t buy. Ignore. They will go away.
Banning etc just gives them the attention they crave.

Well the gap is widening between the big leagues and the small leagues. The big clubs have far too much of the cash and means that the only real competition arrives in the last 8.

Southside, they wont go away. Every time I visit Celtic Park I see their advert on the boards at the JS stand. Why does our club put up with their never ending assaults on our management, players and support?
How much revenue are Celtic taking in order to turn a blind eye to the insults and lies they continue to print?
I’ve not received my AGM pack yet. Can anyone tell me if the accounts in the pack break down revenue from individual sources?
As long as Celtic take their tarnished coin they’re going nowhere. Ban them and let them print their shite anyway. At least we wont be party to it.
Tom McLaughlin
Tom,
The only way you can start the climb back to the top table is with a result or two whoch makes someone notice.
After this week’s round of European ties, teams start to assess where they are. After two more games some will be out of Europe altogether, and some in the Champion’s league group stages will start to cast an eye at the Europa league as that may well be where their destiny lies.
Make no mistake some will look at who is likely to progress from the book stages.
If Celtic ramp up their game, deliver a result or two, not only will it do our own team a power of good in terms of confidence but it will also make others think and adjust.
In the games against Maribor and Legia we asked no questions up front. We has no player and no tactics which made the opposition adjust their play to counter our threat.
There was no Sammi to double up on, or make the opposition coach wonder.
There was no one to make the opposition defence wary of leaving space or where they had to move their defence over to counter an area where we consistently threatened.
If we can find a rhythm and some confidence, if we can deliver a result — opposition and potential opposition will take notice as that is someone’s job.
More importantly — our players will enter future games with greater confidence and belief — that is their job.
Weefra, good luck at the hospital today. Hopefully catch you tomorrow night at the game.

You get same coefficient points for a win in Europa League as you do for Champions league
So
Hopefully build some European coefficient points this year

Some frightening results in the Champions League last night.
Although you never wish not to be in the premier competition in European football it may well be a blessing in disguise that we are not there.
The gap between the top sides and the rest is getting bigger. The top leagues in Europe namely England, Spain & Germany are even streets ahead of countries like Italy and France although both those countries have one or two sides who could be considered top class.
I have argued before that Celtic can only be affective every 2 to 3 years in that competition and really punch above their weight. By that I mean qualify from the group. We need the element of surprise. If we have a good side which we have done in recent years under MON, WGS & NFL we can take the big teams on and beat them. Of that there is no doubt. The facts speak for themselves we have done it in the past. When we qualify continually for the CL two things happen. Managers can suss us out. We have a small squad of the players required at that level. If we lose one or two players to injury or suspension we are left with a weakened team to take on the European giants. Also playing the same teams over and over again gives the the same syndrome as our Premiership opposition. If we play Hamilton 100 times they may beat us once or even twice and gain a few draws but overall we will probably beat them around 90 times out of 100. It’s much the same as when we face Barcelona over and over again eventually like ourselves v’s opposition in this country we are going to be on the end of a pasting. The top teams in Europe have a wealth of talent. Sometimes players bought for £20m plus sitting on the bench. Our squad doesn;t even cost that much. The other issue we have is that once we have performed well at the CL level our players are immediately seen by teams in England as safe buys for their squad and our key players are bought up which means we usually have to rebuild the spine every 2 to 3 years which takes time to settle in again and fucntion to CL level. That may take a year to happen which means going into the CL with an unsettled spine can be very dangerous. This is the position we find ourselves in this season. We are not settled and although we may have performed admirably and not been on the end of a 5+ goal thrashing like some of the sides last night it is highly likely we would have ended up bottom of the group and accrued few co-efficient points. Maribor were not at the races last night against Chelsea and had the look of a side just happy to be there.
In contrast Celtic are now in the Europa League which is no doubt a weaker competition but provides the support with the European action we all look forward to. It is not as glamourous as the CL of that there is no doubt but once the group stage is passed it does get jazzed up a notch. Celtic will face a big gun or two in the KO phases and the club can gauge where we are at in terms of European competition. I think Ronny will benefit from being in the EL and certainly our younger and new players will benefit from it. The club financially may not get the benefits but in the long term IF we can get to the latter stages it will be a good season in European action.
The CL is becoming an elite competition for the top nations. It is becoming stale and is in need of a revamp. You can probably name 3/4’s of the quarter finalists already. It’s pretty much the same teams year on year with the odd exception who then have their squad decimated by the teams above them in the following summer and they have 3 or 4 years striving to get back to where they were.
Celtic are not unique the whole of Europe is trying to compete in a competition that is flawed. The competition suits the big nations and the big clubs within those nations. Manchester United are an interesting club to watch this season. They are reaching desperation stages to get into the CL after missing out for the first time in 20 odd years this season. They resemble a Newcastle United of the late 90’s who threw money at a succession of foreign players who had good CV’s but ultimately did not fit in the team or the club. Sign a big name on big money and they will produce the goods? Correct? It doesn;t always work. You need the right players and it doesn;t matter if they cost you £100m or £1m if they are not the right type for the club or the team you would be as well taking it to the casino and firing it all on red or black. Chelsea are a club who do business reasonably well at that level. They have bought and sold well this summer and their players have clicked. They have proved in the past though that they can also sign the wrong player and shelled out £50m for the best goal scorer in England and turned him into a wreck in front of goal.
Manchester United may again miss out on the CL and it will be a huge problem as their league is so competitive their is no guarantee they can get back up there again and qualify. They could slide into the situation a Spurs or Liverpool have been in for years with the odd CL qualification.
To go back to Celtic we don’t have a problem with gaining entry to the CL qualifiers. Celtic should qualify for the next 10 years. What Celtic need to do though is sign the right players and attain those players for at least 3 years we have a chance of doing well. Losing half or more of your teams spine takes a year to repair and bed in. Chucking cash at it doesn’t always work and in our environment we have to take our time to sign the right players and certainly under Ronny the players who will work and live by his demands which will certainly not suit every player out there.
I think we have seen signs this season that we have a good team but the group is still in settling mode. In the CL we would be torn apart if we played badly and the confidence would be gone.
The EL affords us a bit of leeway due to the standard being lower but also gives the players more chance of getting positive results and by the turn of the year be ready for the bigger challenge of either a big EL club or one of the 3rd placed teams from the CL. The team will be more settled and it should allow us to put down a marker with where this side are and what we need to improve the team for a crack at the CL next season.
I think because of our domestic scene there is an obssession by us all and the media that we MUST gain CL group stage football. It’s understandable. Celtic are a big club. We have a healthy balance sheet. We should be in the premier competition. I think in our current situation domestically it is only realistic that we are able to compete in the CL format every 2/3 years and perform well.
I am in no way excusing the defeats to Maribor or Legia which were awful. We should not be losing to such teams in the manner we did. We should be competing at that level and not being swept aside so easilly. Last night when I watched the goals rolling up on my computer on the BBC vidprinter I did silently breath a sigh of relief we are not there. Next season we must be ready for a good crack at it but I think we should know after the turn of the year IF we are still in the EL how likely it is that we will succeed at that level.
Bring on the Astra. Let’s keep the momentum going.
