Zaluska assault

808

I didn’t realise until this morning that the assault on Lukasz Zaluska’s assault by two premiership footballers was so serious as to have the player lying unconscious on the ground for several minutes.  The Celtic player was out in Glasgow with his wife Sunday night before the incident.

Lukasz was singled-out for online abuse by two Dundee United players in August, one from Poland, one Scottish-born player who has represented Northern Ireland, after the Legia Warsaw Champions League qualifier.  The Polish player subsequently took to Twitter to campaign for Legia’s punishment for fielding a suspended player against Celtic to be reduced.

The stories I could tell about various footballers would fill more than a few volumes, but all of the tales I’ve heard about Lukasz are that he is a polite, generous, player who repeatedly puts himself out to help Celtic fans and Poles living here.  Very best wishes to the big guy, I hope we see him back soon.

If you fancy watching Sunday’s game against Kilmarnock in comfort……..  We have secured another pair of Premium Seat tickets for the Jock Stein Stand from Celtic sponsor Magners.  To win the tickets answer the following question:

Which country do Thursday’s opponents FC Astra come from?

Posted a few in the vexing topic of cats. Is this the one you mean?

    ——-

Just been reading the ‘How to live on £53 per week’ article on the BBC.

Unbelievably, apparently it costs around £1000 per year to keep a domestic cat.

    £1000.

    To keep a cat?

Not in this house. Oh no.

Our 2 cats, Munn and Dunning, cost virtually nothing to keep, if you consider the minimal cost of garbage and Tesco Value Peanuts. My simple, sustainable solution to the cost of cat food is to cut a small hole – about the size of a 10p piece – at the bottom of the neighbour’s wheelie bin.

The local mice thrive by being able to feed on the garbage, the cats likewise on the mice. Accordingly, the cats are well exercised before their dinner, and can enjoy some playtime with their leftovers afterwards.

This has the added benefit that the local mice tend to live in and around the neighbour’s house rather than mine. The cats enjoy spending so much of their time round there that they’ve even adopted the large flower pot under the kitchen window as a litter tray, the one used by the neighbour for his herbs I think – not that he thanks me for the free fertiliser, oh no.

To balance the cats’ diet I use Tesco Value Peanuts, 59p for 200 grams, twice a year. Placed in a typical feeder at ground level, the peanuts attract the blue tits, robins and sparrows to the back yard, particularly effective around fledging time, and periodically creates a rather catching pastiche of feathers and feet as the cats pile in to the bite size beauties.

So there you have it: A Low-cost High-protein diet for the active cat, and the thick end of £1000 spare each year to support the good work of PDSA and YOC.

    ###############################

Well the blonde one spent £1000 on one visit to the vet on her wee Norwegian Forest Cat, she now knows he’s allergic to fish as well as just about everything else.

What he isn’t allergic to is Venison and Rabbit, that is all he can eat.

    Now, £100 a month I’d reckon

Oh and she has another cat as equally pampered. …!

House cats not allowed out with the scheme bhoys….

You seem to be questioning why Celtic supporters who were at Dingwall on Saturday are not discussing police harassment, your inference being that such a lack of interest in the subject implies apathy or that we have grown used to it…………………………ETC

    ==================================================

I was at Dingwall and walked into the Town which is close, what struck me was groups of our supporters outside bars behaving in what can only be described as intimadatory,

yelling at everyone at the top of their voices, but the Police in this instance stood off as not to provoke or antagonise.

Both inside and on the approach I did not see any heavy handed activity,I did question a Policeman in the East Stand Extension which is parallel with the pitch, why he had a low level camcorder trying to film the Celtic end ,and that in itself causes annoyance. He stopped shortly after, but I doubt the equipment he had was suitable for identification.

Maybe I was lucky,Dingwall in my view was not close to the Tynecastle experiences but thats sorted now.

Bayern Munich , Chelsea ,PSG , Man City, Barca, Real Madrid ……they all leave me cool and barely interested . It seems to me CL is more about money than ever before and the magic is not really there anymore.

Would not say it was all about money for the teams you mention. They are cash laden anyway. It is all about prestige to these teams, which in turn eventually brings in more cash, more fame, etc. Its more to do with the money for teams like us,teams playing in smaller leagues.

The influence of Sky cannot go unmentioned here.It gets to a ridiculous stage when next season, the teams relegated from the EPL will get almost the same amount as the CL winners. The EPL is spoiling football, not the CL.

Agree and Disagree there to be honest.

Sky & BT deal with the EPL is obscene but the UCL is following a similar model. Allowing 2nd, 3rd and 4th placed teams entry to CL qualifiers and group stages is not any good.

What should happen is that 2 teams from the big nations should be guaranteed entry and how the countries reach that conclusion is up to them.

    3rd v 4th

    Winner 3rd, 4th v 2nd place team.

If other countries prefer top two that is up to them. Allowing 4 teams from one nation into the CL is a joke and dilutes the European feel to it. Effectively after the group stage it is Spain, Germany, England and a few others from France, Italy and a collection of smaller nations. Quarters have one or two sides from nations out with Germany, Spain and England and the semis rarely have any.

If the current format is to be kept then scrap the group stage rule having no teams from that countries own nations.

    Groups could include.

    Barca

    Athletico

    Liverpool

    Chelsea

Obviously their own pot seedings may prevent that anyway but getting the same teams to the latter stages are making the competition poorer.

The UCL needs a revamp. It is going to get worse as the years roll on. £100m+ spent wisely each season should ensure semi final participation for the top clubs. That is easilly achievable with the revenues they gain from TV revenue and doesn;t even touch their income from tickets, sponsorship, shirt sales, etc.

The gulf will get bigger and bigger unless something is done.

It will happen in years to come that a Porto or Ajax will win the CL but will be a one off. May only happen once every decade. Is this good for the game? I don;t think it is. The alternative is to have a two teir CL and allow the big 5 to battle it out in one half of the group stages and the rest in the other groups and meet in the Knock Out faze. If they don;t do something they would be as well calling it the elite CL because it is about as widely European as the world series baseball in the USA. It is a tournament at the latter stages for the elite clubs.

Basically you can participate but you will never get near winning it in it’s current form. Some could argue our league is the same and they would be right to do so. Football has changed. The money is important. A European league is a must. I would suggest a Northern European League which would contain countries north of Germany and a Southern European league with the Germans, Italians and Spanish. The domestic leagues would be feeders into that and the UCL would be for the top perfomring clubs in those leagues for each country. One team per country and less games as the elite European leagues would preovide top class opposition and the TV revenues for all European nations to compete more fairly at the CL level.

Domestic cups can be competed for in their own nations and the club can make their own decision whether to play their stars or a lesser standard of player in their squad or Youth team. This will allow the smaller clubs in all nations to gain some success in domestic football and gain entry to the Europa League for this making it a competition that none of the European League clubs can enter or fall into. The top clubs Celtic included will have the European league, Domestic cups (if they choose to play full strength) and the CL. This means more clubs across Europe win trophies. The TV money can be spread more fairly and the UCL becomes what it should be. A competition for the top club from every nation to be crowned the kings of Europe.

If a club from any country finishes bottom of their European legue they would have to play off against the winners of their domestic league to keep their place in it. This provides a carrot for the countries coming up.

Just a few ideas I have had regarding the future of the game. Obviously bar room/fag packet thinking at the minute and not fully thought out but hopefully it makes sense.

  16. Here’s a novel idea for revamping the UCL.

How about all winners of domestic leagues qualify and it’s a straight knockout with no seedlings .

Could maybe call it the European cup?

  17. LB

The future of European football will be in a form not that far from your suggestions.

When Man Utd look like dropping off the CLradar it only takes a few more of that size to make the dog too big for the tail to wag.

I really would like to have a pint with Kev. I don;t understand what joy or satisfaction he gets out of coming on here daily and slating the club.

We can all have days when we need a good moan to get things off our chest but he is on a constant tirade against the club.

I think he is a good Celtic supporter and wants better for the club but it can;t be enjoyable to be talking about the club in negative tones all the time.

As my auld ma always says. If you are not enjoying it maybe it is time to give it up!

In my opinion it is long overdue. If football was being run by the Americans they would have done this already. The time may come when America is running the game. We better get our football in gear before they really take an interest in it or they will just take over.

Let’s get quizzical with the eagerly awaited return of the Lunchtime Quiz.

Celtic have won nine Champions League away games since its inception between qualifiers and group stage.

How many of the nine defeated teams can you name?

***The rules of the game are always the same. No search engines please, you’re just cheating yourself.***

  21. melbourne mick, thanks for the info. I’ve passed it on. It was our first time in Melbourne, which we thought was brilliant. We were right on the South-side of river which as you’ll know is excellent for the choice of eateries and bars. Doesn’t have an opera house or bridge, but brilliant city with excellent sports arenas.

  22. Burghbhoy,

The reason there was a change was purely financial. Granada TV had invested loadsamoney in Man U doing well and they took a huge knock when Und were knocked out in the 1st round by Galatasary (some some other Turkish team). The format was changed the following season. As Auldheid says, if the likes Man U don’t qualify for the CL on a regular basis, you can bet that a new format will be devised pronto.

I appreciate your point of view, mate.

‘A win is a must – even at 1-0 – however nervousness and lack of confidence can be seen and smelt — by the crowd and the opposition.

We have to go out with an attitude that we are going to boss this team from the outset.’

I am confident Ronny will send the boys out confident and with a view to press Astra when they have the ball and get forward in numbers when we win it. The concern is that our fans see this as a gimme so if the Romanians prove stubborn then frustrattion will kick in and that will add more pressure onto the team.

I actually saw the Maribor game very differently from you:

‘Against Maribor Ronny made the fatal mistake of giving them the ball and prissying about without the ball as if Maribor were Barcelona or Real Madrid.

We had no outball up the park and they had nothing to worry about and so came forward at will and with no hesitation.’

In the away tie, from what i recall, you could hardly tempt Maribor out of their half…. They gave us the ball.

At Celtic Park we had a dilemma, we didn’t need to score unless they did so we chose a very cagey approach. I can see why. It didn’t work out on the night but I certainly don’t think we gave them too much respect.

For me, I have been a really big supporter of the new regime and a big question will be whether KC is back in or not. If he is, i’ll be disappointed.

  26. I did notice the DR thought that it was great fun to poke at a celtic player who was out with his wife on a night out, was attacked and knocked unconscious by a couple of thugs, this has to be another low for them, tables turned and it was two celtic players who done the assault, names would have been plastered in every part of the SMSM, it’s Disscusting this is what people have to put up with, I would ban that rag from Celtic Park in a NY minute, no hesitation what so ever, freedome of the press is one thing, this is just toilet paper stuff.

  27. Parkheadcomesalford

What is interesting about Man Utd is that the need to divert income to the owners pockets has reduced what they spend on players.

Then you have Chelsea and Man City being bankrolled and that only leaves 2 CL qualifying slots that the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham are likely contenders for on the basis that they have to some extent, and certainly at Arsenal a policy of wage commensurate with income which is where Man Utd are finding themselves.

FFP will eventually catch up with City and Chelsea because it’s not in the interest of other clubs not to allow it to work.

In Scotland the last term you hear mentioned is domestic FFP because it would kill TRFC if same principles rigorously applied.
