A simple lie, compliant Celtic voices and it was job done

381

I was out and about this morning and heard Neil Lennon on the radio making it very clear that he was not about to abandon Bolton Wanderers, despite their inability to pay wages or settle creditors when due. Having “shed millions from the payroll in the summer” his focus was on winning points with a squad augmented by youth development players.

For Neil, the financial realities are simply the parameters he had to work within.

Think back 18 months to when he left Glasgow. Celtic Park was awash with amicable statements from club and manager but the news coverage could not have been more skewed – Neil left because he was unhappy at working within his given budget. We had former Celtic players broadcasting this message that very day. And like every negative Celtic story, it got traction among those more than happy to believe that narrative.

It was nonsense. Celtic’s football budget hadn’t changed. Neil had not adopted a view of himself which only allowed him to deal with more expensive players. What happened was a PR campaign took flight within moments of the news breaking. Dig into Celtic, turn the fans against them. It worked too. A simple lie, a couple (literally) of compliant ‘Celtic’ voices and it was job done.

This has been going on for decades. It’s only recently, with formal PR companies competing for the same demographic, we’ve seen how these messages get into the media.

Celtic have PR to arrange media conferences, distil club news and formal statements. There’s no attempt at subversion, either outwards or at our own demographic.

Saturday is a big day for our Treble Winning Captains. Shortly after Billy McNeil unveils his statue in front of the stadium, Tom Boyd, our only other Treble Winning Captain will be in the Kerrydale Suite, to sign personalised copies of The Winds of Change. The book which covers Celtic managers from Liam Brady to Martin O’Neill, across what was an unforgettable story of redemption.

Joining Tom at the signing session will be Billy’s former team mate, John Hughes. If you get talking to Yogi, just listen. He’s seen it all, so don’t interrupt him.

You’ll be able to buy The Windows of Change, as well as Caesar and The Assassin, the book which documents Billy McNeill and Davie Hay’s periods in charge, inside the Kerrydale Suite before kick off.

Club sponsor, Magners, have kindly offered us two Premium Seat tickets for Saturday’s game in the Jock Stein Stand. To enter the competition, what you’ve got to do is email me, celticquicknews@gmail.com with the name of the team we’re playing in the email Subject Line.  Competition closes at 18:00 TODAY, so it’s only open for a short window….

…………while you are entering the competition. You might want to take an extra minute and donate £1 to our Mary’s Meals school kitchen project. You have already built four kitchens in Malawi. These donations go towards putting food on the table.  You can donate here.

I’m 52 and have never been aware of a connect between fans and management. There have always been discontent between fans and the board and probably always will be…

Kitalba – I usually scroll by you but caught some of your tripe earlier, you’re still a prick….

I reckon next season will show how many, there will be a massive uptake in season books imo.

As for the board, they are doing what they are for the benefit of the PLC first and foremost, the club is secondary, and that will not change, sadly.

The only way I will not leave Scottish Football altogether to develop it’s corruption and bigotry, will be if the supporters of SPFL Clubs organise boycotts etc ….we cannot do nothing, or we will be forever infected by the hunhordes…….BE CAREFUL, CELTIC BOARD, BE VERY CAREFUL

PARKHEADCUMSALFORD. We used to think we were being cheated now we know we were being cheated that is a big difference. The Celtic board know they and the Celtic support were cheated and yet they appear not to be interested. To continue to spend your hard earned cash knowing you are being cheated is for you to decide however, I will not pay to support corrupt football. H.H.

There is a lot of justifiable angst on the blog regarding the possibility of the cheats getting away their misdeeds. Naturally some people feel so disgusted by perceived inaction on the part of our Board that they wlll stop supporting Celtic. I personally do not that this is the way forward though I do support a boycott of Hampden.

However, before this comes to pass there is time to prepare, organise and take effective action. Could the various organs of the Celtic Family not appoint a Steering Committee to formulate policy and rally the support to expose the cheating and restore pride in the integrity of the game in Scottish football? There are ideas out there in how to combat the Regans and Doncasters of the world. I would not predicate policy on the basis of what others will do. Mike Ashley may not proceed with his legal actions. Thus, we should have plans in place.

As Corkcelt said earlier, we lose some and we gain some. I think if the huns are back then some will walk away but this will be tempered by the ones who do miss them and will come back so it will probably even itself out. I don’t agree with the ones who miss the huns but there are supporters like that out there whether we like it or not.

Personally I’ve not missed them and hope they go bust again so I don’t have a decision to make but I’m not sure how likely that will be, depends on who you believe.

At this point in time I’ll probably renew but depending what comes out in the court cases in the New Year and any action / inaction could sway me ether way. Up till now it’s all speculation on what happened behind closed doors, I’m hoping the court cases clear most of it up.

I’m neither a board basher or a happy clapper, just a Celtic supporter who wants to see my team win. I’ve followed Auldheid on here, TSFM & Twitter and understand Res 12. If, and it’s a big IF, that the board were complicit then the games up for me…

  10. shooie…

A lot os fans have stopped going for numerous reasons… Too expensive, especially when they have kids to take, (cut the price of the grub etc) some for the lack of the hun…as the amount of phone calls/texts I got to source tickets for that semi was beyond belief.

Myself…four Saturday games at 3.00 last season did it for me, although I still go when I can.

  11. WEST END OF EAST END

I would probably class myself as a happy clapper, but the longer this goes on and the club don’t take the bull by the horns more of me is starting to think the board want them and the money it brings back. Justice needs to be done for their years of cheating or the games a bogey as far as I a concerned. The last thing I want to do is stop going to watch Celtic but I couldn’t stomach their hordes coming back to Celtic with their bile as if nothing had happened.

The suits were thinking outside the box when they appointed Ronny, and fair play to them for it, a gamble right enough, but from what I see, the seeds have been sewn and if they stick with it, and I am nigh on certain they will, the benefits will be had down the line.

Now if it transpires that they decide to relieve him of his post, they have to think outside the box again, carry on with what has been sewn, none of your Coyle and Moyes types.

  16. When RIFC were erroneously admitted to the league most didn’t care. Either they were in a different division or people were too busy looking forward to the cash bonanza.

Provided there’s no further rule bending to get them into the top league I’m pretty ambivalent to their potential arrival.

I’m not convinced they’ll get here tbh.

  17. the glorious balance sheet on

Unfortunately Scottish football, the current custodians of Celtic included, is as bent as a bottle of chips.

The suits in charge of Scottish football believe that we need a Celtic-“Rangers” rivalry in order for the game to survive, for future TV deals to be secured etc.

They will go to any lengths to keep the golden goose alive even if this means denying the facts and consequences of liquidation.

Rangers played for many years with unregistered players. They did so to gain an advantage in signing players they couldn’t otherwise afford. We know they did this because David Murray said so at the First Tier Tribunal.

The worldwide practice is for the matches featuring the unregistered players to be declared a 0-3 defeat and consequently trophies to stripped where appropriate.

The scale and blatant nature of the cheating – as evidenced by the Huns denial of side letters and Martin Bain ordering that his own EBT contract be shredded – is unprecedented in world football and makes the question of compensation for stolen CL and other prize income a real consideration.

Our club has, on the face of it, been silent in the face of this cheating despite the financial and sporting losses it has caused us.

And when shareholders and fans try to put the club in a position where it takes action, how does the club respond? Obfuscation and stalling in my view.

I remember one of the posters behind resolution 12, Morriseythe23rd I think it was, post on here at time explaining how he visited Celtic Park ahead of the AGM 2 years ago to try and get a meeting with the Company Secretary on res12. He was ignored and left in the foyer and fobbed off if I recall correctly.

The club then appeared to enter into dialogue with the resolutioners post 2013 AGM in response to the resolution being adjourned but the club haven’t taken direct ownership of the matter, leaving it up to the individuals despite the huge finances involved in the cheating. Is over 2 years long enough to say something has been put into the long grass?

If this was tesco presented with evidence that sainsburys had broken trading laws to tesco’s detriment do you think that tesco would let this drift on for 2 years as “the office for fair trading are being evasive, you know what they’re like”, or do you think they would take it in-house, have their lawyers all over it and create the biggest furore imaginable in order to get the matter fully investigated and dealt with through appropriate punishments and compensation?

While all this is ongoing Celtic’s majority shareholder gives interviews on how much Celtic and Scottish football have missed “rangers”, how they have such a glorious history. Are these the words of a man who has any appetite for pushing for sanctions against that entity?

Remember, Celtic are represented on the SPFL and SFA boards. Our club are not powerless innocents crusading for justice here. Compare Trumbull hutton’s words to Dermot Desmond’s.

None of this is to denigrate the work that the resolutioners have done, it’s clear they’ve acted in good faith and put it a power of work to get justice.

But I can’t help but think this is all something that the suits in charge of Scottish football – and those at Celtic park – wish would just go away.

  18. McJay

If the PLC don’t want to challenge the corruption, bent referees, bigotry.

    They are beyond contempt.

I does not leave fans who are against corruption with many options.

You wire in to the cheating if ye like.

    Me…I will pass.

Opposing with the withdrawl of funds….is all we can do.

A rigged league…would it not be fecking stupid to pay to see that.

How daft does PL think supporters are?

And what annoys me even more, is the fact that Rangers are deid…..so how the feck can there be an old firm.
