A simple lie, compliant Celtic voices and it was job done

381

I was out and about this morning and heard Neil Lennon on the radio making it very clear that he was not about to abandon Bolton Wanderers, despite their inability to pay wages or settle creditors when due. Having “shed millions from the payroll in the summer” his focus was on winning points with a squad augmented by youth development players.

For Neil, the financial realities are simply the parameters he had to work within.

Think back 18 months to when he left Glasgow. Celtic Park was awash with amicable statements from club and manager but the news coverage could not have been more skewed – Neil left because he was unhappy at working within his given budget. We had former Celtic players broadcasting this message that very day. And like every negative Celtic story, it got traction among those more than happy to believe that narrative.

It was nonsense. Celtic’s football budget hadn’t changed. Neil had not adopted a view of himself which only allowed him to deal with more expensive players. What happened was a PR campaign took flight within moments of the news breaking. Dig into Celtic, turn the fans against them. It worked too. A simple lie, a couple (literally) of compliant ‘Celtic’ voices and it was job done.

This has been going on for decades. It’s only recently, with formal PR companies competing for the same demographic, we’ve seen how these messages get into the media.

Celtic have PR to arrange media conferences, distil club news and formal statements. There’s no attempt at subversion, either outwards or at our own demographic.

Saturday is a big day for our Treble Winning Captains. Shortly after Billy McNeil unveils his statue in front of the stadium, Tom Boyd, our only other Treble Winning Captain will be in the Kerrydale Suite, to sign personalised copies of The Winds of Change. The book which covers Celtic managers from Liam Brady to Martin O’Neill, across what was an unforgettable story of redemption.

Joining Tom at the signing session will be Billy’s former team mate, John Hughes. If you get talking to Yogi, just listen. He’s seen it all, so don’t interrupt him.

You’ll be able to buy The Windows of Change, as well as Caesar and The Assassin, the book which documents Billy McNeill and Davie Hay’s periods in charge, inside the Kerrydale Suite before kick off.

Club sponsor, Magners, have kindly offered us two Premium Seat tickets for Saturday’s game in the Jock Stein Stand. To enter the competition, what you’ve got to do is email me, celticquicknews@gmail.com with the name of the team we’re playing in the email Subject Line.  Competition closes at 18:00 TODAY, so it’s only open for a short window….

…………while you are entering the competition. You might want to take an extra minute and donate £1 to our Mary’s Meals school kitchen project. You have already built four kitchens in Malawi. These donations go towards putting food on the table.  You can donate here.

Around 75% of people who enter donate something – thank you.

  2. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Today our beloved , Tommy, would have been fifty nine. . A huge loss first and foremost for his family and to his second family at Celtic.

Guys like Tommy along with the much missed Sean Fallon were Celtic to me. Two wonderful men, fathers , grandfathers and all that is good about Celtic.

We may never see their like again. Hopefully, I’m wrong.

  3. I must admit I have little interest in what Newco do.

I also have little interest in title stripping, tax dodging etc with oldco. If the taxman had taken them to court earlier and lost, Murray would be seen as a genius.

They went bust and I loved it.

A new club started and I am fine with that too and happy to play them

The only ridiculous and clearly conspitorial aspect is the old club new club nonsense.

If the SFA nip that one in the bud, I can let all else go.

In reality, I can see more cursory fines of oldco which won:t be paid and we move on

  4. TET

On the 5 way I think it depends on which plan we are talking about.

I cannot see Celtic being happy with plan A to keep TRFC in the top tier. That would have needed a 5 Way but Celtic voted against.

They might have been OK with Plan B ie 2nd tier but decision was not Celtic’s to take. It was the clubs in that tier and that would have needed a 5 way had they agreed.

By the time it got to Plan C I think Celtic would have had little input and any objections they might have had would have been outvoted anyway. Plan C did produce the infamous 5 way.

In all three scenarios I don’t see Celtic pushing for any Plan but I do see them accepting the outcome of C and perhaps even B. However Plan C is what the agreement covers.

They might have objected to the transfer of SFA Membership but if CG had made that a condition of purchase I cannot see Celtic objecting and again if they did they would have been outvoted if the others thought Obi Wan Green was their only hope. (Star Wars?).

I don’t see complicity in any of this in terms of engineering the final outcome. The only outcome they were involved in was scuppering Plan A.

Now if you mean Celtic should have objected to allowing TRFC a place in the game starting at where they did, I think that was well beyond their power to bring about, even if they had wanted to.

  5. Interesting blog tonight.

My overriding worry is that resolution 12 might just be as big a pain in the arse for our own PLC as it may prove to be for the SFA.

I remember Paul67 claiming that we don’t need no stinking Rangers.

    The narrative has changed.

    The PLC miss them.

The PLC don’t share a street, a train or a pub with the worst of the nuckle draggers .

    Money talks, and that counts.

    More than moving on.

    Will justice prevail ?

I don’t detect much appetite from the suits.

Hopefully I’m wrong ,otherwise it’s game off.

    Forever.

Can remember like yesterday Tommy’s first goal at Pittodrie, also his reaction to a goal at ibrox in a 2-1 win, we’ve got to a stage now were we wont see anyone who genuinely wants to play for the jersey the way TB did. It’s not the same anymore I’m afraid, money dictates now and we have players wearing the number 67 shirt and then fecking off to Southampton ! I feel sorry for our younger support, theres little to excite at present or for the foreseeable future aside from romping the league season after season. We had it good mate especially when we had Aberdeen and Dundee Utd at their best and the huns nowhere to be seen

A fairer position to say would be that one member of the family dynasty made an inspired decision in appointing jock stein as manager in 1965. Everything that happened after that was to the credit of jock and the players.

*History has been kind to Bob Kelly, but don’t forget that he initially wanted Jock as Assistant Manager to Sean Fallon then when Jock turned that down it was as Co-Manager, again the Big Mhan said No and Bob conceded defeat at that.

Seemingly at the first board meeting after his appointment when questioned on that coming Saturday’s team Jock replied that due to a few injuries and a wee cold here and there he wisnae sure yet, to which bob retorted that he was telling them to mind their own business, at that Jock allegedly said “that’s about the size of it.

As the Big Mhan often said “it’s no use saying you have control if you don’t”.

As quonno has pointed out- how many trophies did we win in the 30 years before jock under the Kelly and white watch. Robert Kelly was picking the team to disastrous effect, getting us beaten 4-0 in a European semi to mtk Budapest when we were 3-0 up from the first leg because he wanted to entertain the Hungarian fans with attacking football.

*and dropping 2 of his best players in the Final, Jinky and Frank Brogan who tormented the zombie defence for the replay.

What did they do after jock? Well they embarrassed the guy by offering him a position as director of the Celtic pools in 1978. After all he had done for our club.

*that was Desmond White; Sir Bob was up in that Paradise in the sky by then.

They proceeded to run our club into decline. When Davie hay asked for funds to sign an upcoming young defender by the name of Steve Bruce they told him to pay for the transfer fee out his own pocket.

*was that no Stevie Clarke and Joe McLaughlin.

I’m at odds with the prevailing chat on CQN…

I don’t care if Lawwell and co are getting beefed in to SFA about tribute act

I’d prefer they were giving 100% attention to Celtic. Id have much preferred Lawwell to ditch SFA gigs.

I’d like us to have been qualifying for CL year after year. Id prefer us to have £50m in the bank.

Id like us to be so far away from the rest of Scottish football that we don’t need to concern ourselves with whatever cheating / corruption they try to conjure. The margin between us should be so great we are untouchable. We had that opportunity. Lawwell and co have squandered it and must now be so grateful that the Celtic support can be so easily distracted by the resurrection of the Hun as a common enemy. It takes the heat of them. It covers their @rses for failure to realise our potential as a club

Apparently winning the petrofeck cup will beat reaching the uefa cup final. “SFTB

To assess all the circumstancial evidence from your proposed summation of stances.

Without knowing anything contrary I would say that it s pretty compelling and fully betrays our plc’s mindset

    HH”

Sorry, it’s late and I’m off to my bed so just a few points about why I think the evidence that our Board wanted them back is not (yet) fully compelling.

First, the narrative in the early days was about keeping them in the SPL but agreeing to title stripping, following a proper investigation. That would have been a reasonable stance for me, if followed through. Nobody wants a big club with a big support to just disappear. So everybody would have been looking towards an appropriate punishment for their misdemeanours.

In the time taken to investigate that, something had to be done about the immediate future of the Ibrox club. Somewhere in there CG played hard ball with the SFA and SPL and was supported by a few patsies and placemen from the SPFL (Ballantyne etc;). Somewhere in that process the Continuity Myth was invented, selling the prospect that buying the assets of a liquidated club was the same as a new company taking over an incorporated club in open sale. It was not a brilliantly scripted myth- that is why the details had to be kept secret- because they would not stand up to scrutiny. The only way to sell this was to follow the Emperors New Clothes approach of just saying it was so. There were enough influential bodies willing to buy this viewpoint even though no Official statement was ever made to say it was so. The nearest we came was this year when Doncaster, emboldened by the success of their strategy in a compliant media, made personal statements to the press that he saw them as the same club, but was clear to state that this was a personal view. No one has had the guts to officially proclaim them the same club – not the SFA, not the SPFL and, unless I missed it, Celtic have not said so either.

Charlie Green was happy to take this gift and run with it. It helped him be pals with the ibrox mob for a while. And the bad smell was that our club kept schtum throughout all this apart from a playing to the galleries crack about Rory Bremner and an expression of surprise at the outcome of LNS. I can understand why that silence is highly suspicious but it does not pass the compelling test just yet. It does look and walk like a duck but I am hoping it is just a decoy duck designed to lure others out into the open to reveal the illegalities that have been going on.

Why Auldheid’s view still has leverage with some of us is precisely because he has been told so by CP insiders and he has told us that he has been told so. Now conspirators in a not very well scripted conspiracy rarely say anything because it gets harder to deny it later on when facts come to light.

So I am left with 4 possibilities:-

    1) Auldheid is in on the conspiracy- along with canamalar and Morrisey and others- which I am sure you will agree is unlikely.

    2) Tony Donnelly’s view is correct- the Board are just toying with the Res 12 guys and will eventually say well we tried but we are up against forces we can’t fight and we just have to roll with these punches. I doubt DD and PL are so craven and fightless.

    3) The Board were in it from the start and wanted an Ibrox club back in the top division because it was good for business. That was never a compelling view because the money lost via CL qualification (irregular though it was) and guaranteed league wins was worth more than the 4 games (6 tops if we drew them in both cups) per season with a full house. That argument never made any compelling economic sense.

or 4) through a mixture of cock up and being sidelined, they let others create a mess and thought they could ride this mess out and the Ibrox club would be holed long term by their court cases and money line problems. They made a virtue out of this “Napoleonic strategy” but, in effect, they stayed out of a battle hoping and believing that the forces of law and the taxman would blow the whole thing apart without them having to directly fight.

That is now looking like a risky or naive viewpoint from them but it is the only one that seems to fit all the facts. The other 3 viewpoints have glaring holes in them.

But I hold to the possibility that I may have called this one wrong and I await further evidence.

    And now, it’s past bed-time

First of all,I really enjoy your insights and anecdotes about the glorious era some of us were privileged to be part of.

The Kelly family played a major role in the creation of an entity which many of us and our forefathers cherish.

To hear the family name besmirched as it regularly is on these pages,I find grossly unfair to a family dynasty which has made a huge contribution to an institution which many of us love.

It seems that ,for some,Celtic are an auto immune disease.

    Good morning fellow Celts

Classic debate yesterday on the blog.

Feel less need to post as the Auldheid and the Res 12 guys are right on the case. Then we have The Glorious Balance Sheet & TET clealry articulating anything I would have to say. Almost..

One thing. The board may be worried about consequences on them as a group, or as individuals. They may have genuine concerns for the safety of individual Celtic fans too. I’m not too sure how far their legal responsibilities on duty of care reaches…

One thing is clear for this Celt. If by the end if January the BDO appeal is declined, the club must be clear about consequences, including stripping of titles and some penalties. They must also pursue Res 12 with the SFA. From the front!

If the existing board cannot do that, for whatever reason. Their time is up ( it might take years), as they will have lost all relevancy.

    HH

  19. Saltires …………

    That is crystal clear.

The silence from our club has not only been deafening, but embarrassing also.

The cheating should have been challenged long ago.

The SFA should have been confronted publicly over this.

This has cost Celtic not only money, but also has driven many Celtic supporters away as they refuse to pay good money to a corrupt game.

  20. The cheating that cost us the semi final V ICT last season went unchallenged by our club.

Why did we not challenge the SFA ?

If we can get just 4 more entries and reach the magic 67 we’ll do an ‘all in the hat’ draw and one lucky winner will then get a free entry for a friend, family member, or multiple log in moniker ;-). It is Christmas! And if we then go on to reach 88 who knows what joys would be in store…

The cost to enter is £10 per team with £5 of that going to Wee Shay and the rest going into the prize pot. LMS5 winning pot was £645 ( based on 72 entrants), with £740 raised for Wee Shay.

Whilst you have until midnight on Friday to register it would clearly help all of us on the competition organising committee (that’s CRC and me!) if you could join as soon as possible.

  24. I’ve said it before….needs said again….

The Celtic support and, only the Celtic support can change all that’s wrong with Scottish football.

You have to recognize that, your immediate problem which has to be solved ‘before’ you try to change anything else and that’s the compliant-silent-sell-you-out-board of directors and of course, DD….have to be gotten rid of ‘before’ you can even feel capable of taking on the corruption in the Scottish game.

The Celtic hierarchy and, their carefully planted sycophants have to be brought to an end.

The huns / Sevco / the team that plays at ibrokes have made it perfectly clear that, rules will ‘not’ apply to them. No matter how mighty the enforcer.

    But, all is not lost….

Now, I’m not being biased here but, the best / well meaning / innocent folk of Scottish football are, in the main the Celtic supporters.

Other clubs have good folk among their ranks as well.

    But, they need leadership.

Sadly, Turnbull Hutton has passed on and, to me at least, it looked as though the other clubs, especially Celtic PLC were quite content to, take a back seat and, let Turnbull take on the hun-establishment on his own.

All that did was, demonstrate to the hun-establishment that, Celtic FC might be a big dog but that’s not what’s important. it’s the size of the fight in the dog that matters.

In all of this 4/5 year period of hun absence in the top league….what was Celtic FC’s response ?

    Was there any response ?

Maybe there was a statement saying that Celtic were a stand alone club ?

I think that was it ?

Oh, I forgot about the group of fans who clubbed together and put a ‘statement’ into an, anti-Celtic newspaper?….And, that achieved what ?….It was an exercise in futility….imho….very much along the same lines as Celtic FC when they fight back….

    # The honest mistake era – Celtic sent a letter to the BBC.

    # The BBC’s trashing of the Celtic supporters / customers during the 2011 SCF – Celtic sent a letter of complaint to the BBC watchdog.

    # The Govt Summit for the ‘shame game’ were Celtic had 3 players booked – Celtic’s hierarchy meekly attended the summit which, ultimately saw Neil Lennon being blamed for the entire fiasco and, the Green Brigade being grassed-up to focus by the Celtic hierarchy.

    # The LNS Verdict – Celtic’s hierarchy said they were surprised.

    # Glibby says no trophies will be stripped – Celtic’s hierarchy still maintain that they’re surprised.

    # Celtic’s latest AGM – The hierarchy planned ahead and, turned the tables on the sooty & sweeps in the audience by painting them as, racists and serving up the Celtic supporters to the SMSM on a plate….after, taking all their SB-money.

And yet, the main narrative amongst the support is – “We were cheated out of trophies by the tax dodgers.”

The cheated trophies and the stripping of them as a consequence should be – second – on the list of priorities…imho.

Ah mean, how can Celtic tackle this scandal when the club appears to be built on shifting sands or, is a rudderless ship on the verge of freefall….imho ?

Who, from Celtic will do the tackling ?

DD want the wonderful huns back.

The board are a basket of snakes that needs emptied.

Lawwell an Park are on the make.

The football manager has been or, appears to have been told to ‘not’ question any honest mistakes.

The club captain said he didn’t want involved.

Maybe Neil sealed his fate with the hierarchy when he opined that – “If trophies have been won with the help of financial doping then they have to be stripped.”….that comment might have been too toxic for the kowtowing hierarchy ?

Maybe the Celtic hierarchy don’t like folk with cojones ?

    FLUCK THEM!

Get focused on the hierarchy who…to me….are a collection of dangerous snakes in Celtic’s bed.

You cannot expect to go forward as a club when, the hierarchy will sell you out the back door.

Maybe the Aberdeen fans will go for their board and, their actions might waken you all up….hopefully.

    ……laters…..
