A simple lie, compliant Celtic voices and it was job done

381

I was out and about this morning and heard Neil Lennon on the radio making it very clear that he was not about to abandon Bolton Wanderers, despite their inability to pay wages or settle creditors when due. Having “shed millions from the payroll in the summer” his focus was on winning points with a squad augmented by youth development players.

For Neil, the financial realities are simply the parameters he had to work within.

Think back 18 months to when he left Glasgow. Celtic Park was awash with amicable statements from club and manager but the news coverage could not have been more skewed – Neil left because he was unhappy at working within his given budget. We had former Celtic players broadcasting this message that very day. And like every negative Celtic story, it got traction among those more than happy to believe that narrative.

It was nonsense. Celtic’s football budget hadn’t changed. Neil had not adopted a view of himself which only allowed him to deal with more expensive players. What happened was a PR campaign took flight within moments of the news breaking. Dig into Celtic, turn the fans against them. It worked too. A simple lie, a couple (literally) of compliant ‘Celtic’ voices and it was job done.

This has been going on for decades. It’s only recently, with formal PR companies competing for the same demographic, we’ve seen how these messages get into the media.

Celtic have PR to arrange media conferences, distil club news and formal statements. There’s no attempt at subversion, either outwards or at our own demographic.

Saturday is a big day for our Treble Winning Captains. Shortly after Billy McNeil unveils his statue in front of the stadium, Tom Boyd, our only other Treble Winning Captain will be in the Kerrydale Suite, to sign personalised copies of The Winds of Change. The book which covers Celtic managers from Liam Brady to Martin O’Neill, across what was an unforgettable story of redemption.

Joining Tom at the signing session will be Billy’s former team mate, John Hughes. If you get talking to Yogi, just listen. He’s seen it all, so don’t interrupt him.

You’ll be able to buy The Windows of Change, as well as Caesar and The Assassin, the book which documents Billy McNeill and Davie Hay’s periods in charge, inside the Kerrydale Suite before kick off.

Club sponsor, Magners, have kindly offered us two Premium Seat tickets for Saturday’s game in the Jock Stein Stand. To enter the competition, what you’ve got to do is email me, celticquicknews@gmail.com with the name of the team we’re playing in the email Subject Line.  Competition closes at 18:00 TODAY, so it’s only open for a short window….

…………while you are entering the competition. You might want to take an extra minute and donate £1 to our Mary’s Meals school kitchen project. You have already built four kitchens in Malawi. These donations go towards putting food on the table.  You can donate here.

See Hibs are a bit like Dundee.

Dundee spent the best part of a decade out of the top league. Was there constant talk about league reconstruction to get the biggest teams in the top league? No. Because “Rangers” were not involved then.

It’s only because of “Rangers” that Hibs get spoken about.

    RSVP Redux

“JJ – your confident predictions have been confounded several times already. I think it would be more appropriate to await the outcome of the appeal to the CoS and ascertain the lie of the land re the EBT determination rather than continually regale your readership with the “no appetite for title stripping” mantra prior to anything yet being settled. Was it Roddy Forsyth who insisted that any talk of title stripping would be kicked into the long grass for at least 12 months if HMRC were granted leave to appeal? If leave to appeal is denied (as we expect it to be) then Roddy’s 12 month estimate is instantly nullified.

I’d also agree with Accies1874 re your castigation of VGX simply for the mention of Resolution 12 at the CFC AGM. Being well informed about Rangers tax shambles did not identify RTC as a Rangers supporter, so your comment to VGX was more worthy of the playground than this forum.

If it’s true that Copenhagen are cognizant of Rangers perceived wrong-doings in Europe, then I would welcome their involvement. Supporters of Scottish football badly need a hero to clean out the modern day Augean Stables that are the offices of the SFA and if Copenhagen take their complaint to UEFA, they might very well be our Hercules.”

The aforementioned comment in italics best encapsulates the opposing views of my RSVP article that has provoked the highest number of comments since the inception of this site almost three months ago. I originally attempted to answer each comment individually, but as I have no wish to dominate the comments section, I have decided to address the points raised head on.

First of all, the point is raised about my confident predictions. The Green v RIFC decision is subject to appeal, so I won’t accept any admonishment until it’s finally resolved. I took issue with Keith Jackson’s use of the term ‘the smart money.’ There is no smart money at this tawdry red top rag who cannot afford to send a reporter to cover the King contempt of court case. Keith Jackson, who has gained awards for plagiarizing the work of others, and his colleagues, are little more than Twitter Correspondents. There was no smart money. It was just Mr Jackson’s opinion, which has proven to be accurate. Over one hundred Rangers supporters came on to my Twitter site to rub my nose in my prediction, followed by 150 prompted by Mr Jackson, using his deft handling of the forum where all his articles originate. I also received censure from the CFC supporters with Auldheid suggesting that in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man will not be king if he pokes his eye out. A barrister friend, who plays bass in a pub band, shared his thoughts on how the King case would go over a couple of pints of bitter. His opinion was that he was clearly in contempt of court and would be fined or sent down. I wrote an article predicated on his expert opinion, knowing full well that Mr Jackson was whistling in the dark. A straw poll of his fellow Rangers /King supporters on the sports desk is not a demographic that I would characterize as smart.

My barrister friend and I did not consider the impact of Peter Winston Smith on this matter. He expressed his opinion prior to Mr Smith being appointed. Mr Smith is the most controversial judge presiding in all divisions of the Royal Courts of Justice. Court 21 of The Chancery Division is to be avoided at all costs by plaintiffs who expect a level playing field. No other justice has been subject to more reviews than Justice Smith. No other justice has had to face more calls to be recused than the redoubtable Mr Smith. Mr Smith recused himself from a £2B fraud trial to pursue a personal vendetta against British Airways. Those looking for an embodiment of the term ‘rogue judge’should look no further than Justice Smith. Other judges, who share the surname Smith, are at pains to distance themselves by stressing their initials. When Mr Smith’s decisions are overturned on appeal, he castigates the decisions of his learned friends, which is almost unprecedented in the annals of the Inner Temple.

If my impatience with Resolution 12 was interpreted as a criticism of the contributor I can confirm that this was not my intention.I have expressed an opinion on this matter on several occasions. If you want me to accord all due respect to contributors, then surely those who make comments should reciprocate by reading my articles and the comments I have made on this topic. The CFC board have kicked this into the long grass. This is not a prediction. It is the facts of the matter. Resolution 12 is an embarrassment to the CFC board who did their best to block it, so why should I or anyone else support it if it lacks the conviction of the board of CFC?

In regard to ‘no appetite for title stripping’ I refer you to Stewart Milne’s comments on the matter. When King met with Doncaster, he was informed that a deal had been done with the SPFL member clubs to remove title stripping from the agenda. King kept his part of the bargain by writing a conciliatory letter to all chairmen. The fix is in. This is not a prediction. Stewart Milne’s comments are instructive.

I have consistently taken the view that BDO should not be given leave to appeal the Inner Court of Sessions unanimous determinations. The Supreme Court should not be abused to settle a dispute about who benefits most from the Collyer Bristow settlement. If leave to appeal were granted, it does kick the matter into the long grass but it is a moot point as it won’t reverse the deal arranged by Topping and Doncaster with the clubs most disadvantaged by the DOS/EBT years of 1999-2011. Is this unjust? Absolutely. Is it fair-minded? No. Is it the reality of Scottish football? A resounding yes. Rangers are on their way to the Premier league with all other clubs rolling out the red carpet for the blue pound. The Scottish football authorities would prefer that you don’t look under this carpet.

    ON today’s lead article ….

Half a story may not be a lie, but it isn’t the (whole) truth either. We aren’t getting the whole truth from the Board. For example, Celtic and its fans have been punished because of something that Sleekit said, but we still dont know what he said. that, to me, is wrong.

TD67@1:01….. great ad! Although, if we are going to copy any of the Emirates ads, can I vote for the Jennifer Aniston one that followed? I think she would look lovely in the hoops.

TBF@1:27…. agree. the next statute should be Mr. McGrory.

BMCUWP …. how can I get the Crueset ads? As an old settled down guys who love to cook, I’d quite like those ones. and wont get me in as much trouble as some of the other ones! And, by the way, I have specifically requested Jennifer Aniston just for you! :)

Kitalba…. loved Xmas in oz last year, but santas surfing on xmas day did require a bit of a mental adjustment. So, thought we would stay here this year and do a traditional Canajun SNOWY xmas. But, we have had no snow and now they are saying it might be 14 degrees here! If I had known that, we might have come down to see you!

I am one who has said that I would struggle to stay involved if things dont improve. However some people who have done good work have asked us for a bit of time and trust, and I am trying to give them that. However, neither resource is unlimited.

then there is the part of me that thinks, even if we are right and we are being cheated, why should I (we?) walk away from our club, and leave it to them?

Not sure I have an easy or quick answer to that one.

TD67 at 1.37pm.. That is actually very funny . There again perhaps Chuckles is a member of Lodge Normandy.

Well done to those Aberdeen supporters who have opposed Milne’s capitulation but what is required is of an outpouring of fan opposition to the dirty deals being prepared.

I am quite prepared to believe that our Board are “keeping their powder dry” and I commend Auldheid and the other proponents of Proposition 12 for their indefatigable efforts. I can take their hint that precipitate actions may undermine a carefully worked out strategy.

However, rather than merely gumping our gums on blogs, there are tasks we can undertake. IMHO

Those with contacts with supporter organisations of other clubs could ask them to tell their clubs of their opposition to Milne’s views. Those who have contacts with supporters of other European clubs -especially those who were affected by Rangers’ cheating- calling on them to request that their directors refer the matter t0 UEFA.

For those on CQN questioning our Board’s commitment have you written to PL, marking your envelope “Personal” ?

I did propose previously that the excellent press packs prepared by Auldheid et al be sent to foreign broadcasters and sports papers (perhaps not RTÉ – bit too D4)

This might be best achieved if the documents could be translated into German, French etc. There would be a cost issue and that’s part of my thinking in proposing a “war chest” to undertake the essential task of defending Celtic’s interests where the Club is prevented from doing so by SFA “flexible” rules HH

Where does fair play have its roots?

“Fair play means honest and just play. It is a notion that expresses the sports ethics of the 19th century evolved from the atmosphere of the English bourgeois liberalism” – writes László Kun, a Hungarian author in his book about the history of sports.

In the early years of capitalism sport was industrialised. It was not just a leisure time activity any more, it was business. People were feverishly bent on betting. The conditions of victory became ever more important as manipulation of competition had the power to ruin equal chances of winning. Consequently, the precursors of competition rules and regulations were born although the sheer interest in maximising profit actually inspired their creation.

In spite of these tendencies, there was hope for those who believed in the real values of sport. The movement that considered physical education to be a unique educational tool started to arise again.

Finally, in the 19th century the flowering of capitalism and bourgois liberalism saw the development of modern sport and the birth of the notion of fair play. The expression was first used by Shakespeare in his play, ‘King John’ (in 1597), but it became known and widespread in the 1800s. The ‘Young Christian Athlete’ and ‘Christian Gentleman’ of English society, regarded as the ideal in their era, were educated by means of sport which became an invaluable and key tool for shaping personality. Their behaviour was regulated and controlled by the spirit of fair play.

Fair play was an unwritten rule, a moral value that represented the real essence of sport. All kinds of sport. Professional athletes striving for individual success at an international level were expected to have respect for the rules of the game. If someone did not play by them, they ruined the game and destorted the results. Opponents had to be appreciated, the better they were, the more valuable they became. This philosophy ruled out the possibility of chauvinism.

It was very important to have fair play as a moral guide in sport. At the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, besides the discovery of the educational, health and entertainment functions of sport, significant changes were afoot. Considerable technical developments involving the sports equipment industry were underway and an international system of competitions was created. Clubs and associations were founded worldwide.

At that time a young French visionary stepped onto the stage. Baron Pierre de Coubertin, devoted to education, history and sociology, was the man whose enthusiastic endeavour revived the ancient Olympic Games. He founded the International Olympic Committee in 1894 with the aim of contributing to the building of a better world by educating youth through sport.

He said: “When reviving the Olympics, I did not look near myself but far into the distance. I wanted to give back to today’s world, in a sustainable way, an ancient institution, the principles of which were becoming relevant again. ”

Pierre de Coubertin was worried about the lack of physical development in his fellow countrymen, and he intended to use the Olympic Games as an inspiration to which he added the educational values of 19th century sport in the way it was being practised in the English schools he visited and admired.

He was convinced that the practice of sport would help fight physical and moral decandence. He firmly believed: “There are not two parts to a man, body and soul; there are three, body, mind and character. Character is not formed by the mind, but primarily by the body. The men of antiquity knew this, and we are painfully relearning it. ”

He also emphasised that sport is a universal language and a catalyst for universal harmony capable of bringing people together and teaching them values like mutual respect, solidarity, tolerance and fair play.

The work of Pierre de Coubertin made a huge impact and paved the way for the fair play movement to develop. Nevertheless, sport in the 20th century had to face a number of obstacles.

Social tendencies, world wars, crises, dictatorships, the collision of economic and political interests, chauvinism, nationalism and terrorism swept aside the ideal of fair play both on and off the field. Again, the principle of ‘winning at all costs’ became dominant and almost the rule. This doctrine led to all kinds of distortions in sport such as brutality, aggressiveness, drug use and racism.

It is well-recognised that sport mirrors society. As a consequence, from time to time the value and expression of fair play may vary from one society to another. The more civilised a society, the higher its moral consciousness and sense of responsibility is likely to be. However, it has been shown time and again that success is considered more important than anything else and may be pursued by any means. Sporting success brings social and financial advantages that are a strong and irresistable temptation to some. Nevertheless, as Pierre de Coubertin too believed: “The important thing in life is not the triumph, but the fight; the essential thing is not to have won, but to have fought well.” Playing fair is more important than victory.

Jean D’Ormesson, a French academician, philosopher and member of the International Fair Play Committee, expressed a fundamental truth when he said: “Morals are manifested more sincerely while playing. (…) Fair play allows us to declare that sport shall not become a manifestation of brutality. Fair play helps sport become a constituent of civilisation. Sport is not about killing, humiliating and breaking the opponent; it is about playing with the opponent so that they can deploy all their human skills. ”

Responsible politicians, researchers, influential educationalists, sociologists and scientists of the 21st century collectively realised that sport is much more than the right to enjoy exciting leisure-time activities and preserve health. Sport is an incredible tool to foster and maintain moral values, develop character and shape the body and mind.

More than ever it is vitally important to defend the values intrinsic to sport: respect for oneself and others, solidarity and fair play. Through sport and values like fair play, that encompasses respect, friendship, team spirit, fair competition, sport without doping, respect for both written and unwritten rules, equality, integrity, solidarity, tolerance, care and joy, we can contribute to building a peaceful society and ultimately a better world.

Unless of course you live in Scotland where the need to apologise for an overt 80 year long apartheid policy is not even a consideration. Without fair play in sport you have no sporting enemies just players playing their part. Disguising entertainment as sport is not sport and is the antithesis of fair play. Disguising bigotry as entertainment to make money is obscene and no Tim with half a pea between his ears would countenance it unless they were receiving more than just the benefit of witnessing or participating in sport.

You are certainly not alone in your intentions.

There seems to be a Celtic (nation) trait to just let things roll along. English people living in Scotland are much more proactive in achieving objectives. We need some of that ilk now to organise a united action ensuring fairness in the game in Scotland. I , unfortunately, have the Celtic trait.
