Balance shifted to runners unconvincing with the ball

490

After so much slow build-up play this season, and so many misplaced passes, the sight of Roberts, Christie, Allan and Griffiths pinging the ball around the field was a revelation. I know the game was won before the three substitutes grabbed hold of things, and that there are vastly more challenging scenarios than Inverness at home, but the new blood have asked a big question of the incumbent three attacking midfielders.

The comfort on the ball the three substitutes brought was also contagious, Lustig looked less like a panicked fawn as he confidently back-heeled the ball into space.

The balance in the team has shifted damagingly in favour of players who can run, or perhaps jump, but who are unconvincing with the ball at their feet. So much so, Craig Gordon clears the ball up the field, instead of playing-in Bitton or a central defender, more than we’ve seen from a Celtic keeper in decades.

Christie, Roberts and Allan will not change this overnight (the latter’s misplaced pass against Ajax was costly), but they are doing enough to justify some faith in their selection. New Douglas Park should be an ideal opportunity to strut their stuff.

The interesting part of the Harkins story was that it said Neil Doncaster thinks it’s the same club.

All that’s missing is a quote from him explaining why the – ahem – “same club” ended up three divisions lower and requiring a transfer of membership to itself……..

I think JF is looking up not down for his next move. Aberdeen is a no chance. If he was offered anything like 5K/week by Celtic then it is way more than he’d get from AFC.

He’s a £3k + appearance and win bonus deal for me. which means he would be a £3k/week outlay most weeks.

  10. So now telling the truth, according to the Dundee Courier, is “entering dangerous waters”.

    Whit a country.

And as for the “same club” issue being “puerile”?

Yeah, so puerile that it was being discussed in the courts a couple of weeks ago, with the myth about the “ethereal” nature of a club allowing it to continue after liquidation, being completely debunked.

They’d just love us all to just think “Well, I know the truth”, and be happy with that, as they continue on with their Big Lie, without contradiction from any quarter.

But you can’t have a sport based on this Continuity Myth without it being a farce, and who wants to be any part of that?

  12. At approximately 3:45 on October 15, 2011 Neil Lennon thought that his Celtic managerial role was in tatters.

Step forward James Forrest, Charlie Mulgrew and Anthony Stokes as well as the ineptitude of mcsleekit the following day and he was able to breathe again.

That’s 4 1/2 years ago and all 3 will probably be handed their jotters at the end of this season. That’s life period.

I personally would keep p’s and barley if only for his experience which is something that da doo ron ron has said is missing from his current side.

AS is gone, not for his playing ability but because of his extracurricular lifestyle that has upset his masters, might even be supping porridge in Dublin soon.

As for JF he shouldnae pull on the hoops in seriousness again. Nae offence tae him but he’s no longer part of the plans.

However MON played liam miller when he had stated he was off tae old Trafford. Don’t recall too much weeping and gnashing of teeth then.

Now that Bolton have found a new benefactor mibbees NF will sign him as he’s always rated him. Wonder how he’ll like life in Division 1.

  13. Catchin up—Is Scotland racist? nope.imo,to many good people in this country

Tho you would think that goin by the narrative once again being set by CQNs staunchest and loyal unionists Neganon and Ernie whose ‘institututional racism’ slur gets repeated more and more on here and it is wrong.

to me it just highlights the fakery of the shyster fake socialist pash that made the rich richer under Broon the dyscalcic,

it highlights the war criminal blair and the inner anger of ordinary labour voters unable to stop the death merchant

it highlights no free vote on the referendum, hence going hand in hand with fellow unionists and Tories, political allignment matching economic and political allignment.

I understand Socialisms loathing of Nationalism, but we electorate are stupid(we must be)we voted a labour governement to help the poor weak and needy and got a free marketing, right wing, market liberalizing, war going labour party.

I hope the £5k was not in reference to my post earlier. I just plucked that out of thin air as a figure that considered relatively low in football terms but is a wage far higher than many of the fans will ever see.

It also wasn’t specifically in reference to JF either. Just the idea that players love a club – as long as the money is right. Even if they’re offered a good income.

Given his numbers (age, games, caps) …. if I were JF’s agent, I would I be reasonably confident that some team in England will pay him more than Celtic is (apparently) offering.

Do I think he is worth it? Probably not … but, then I’d say few players in Scotland (and in England even less so) are worth what they get paid.

I cant see him getting any offers from top English teams…. but that doesn’t mean some lower EPL or Championship team wont be willing to pay him what he thinks he is worth…. and a lower level EPL team that sits back more and tries to play on the break, may actually suit him better.

I never suggested anything of the sort. Never. Just added that without any cryptic inference; it’s a point of fact his Da was /is a big longtime Hun and I wouldn’t suspect he’d be disappointed if Jf quit us. Also a point of fact he never prevented his boy playing for Celtic, so kudos there.

I just made note of what’s local knowledge around his area, and also worth noting that when he got into trouble for his indiscretions on a night out he was surrounded by family and friends, some of whom appeared to be encouraging him rather than looking out for him.

No – like you I am valuing him low ( by football standards) and making the point that AFC don’t even pay low wage by Celtic standards. I would be astonished if any player at AFC is on £5k/ week. Which is why they are easy pickings. I would have taken Rooney over Cifcti or Colw or CKR.

He’s no world beater but he’s proven at SPFL level.

I wonder if JF has been offered an appearance based deal? That would tally with his rejection.

  26. My friends in Celtic,

I always thought that James Forrest had the potential to be a great player and asset to the team. Especially in Europe where he could take the ball for a walk. However he has never really looked like consistantly fulfilling that potential and it is maybe time for a move. Both for his own career and for Celtic’s future plans.

The fact that his family are all ” Rangers” fans has absolutely nothing to do with anything.

Medicals are tough, but treatment is so much more advanced that I would think that he would have a very good chance of passing a medical. Sciatica can be controlled and treated in 2016.

Contrast that to one of the greatest ever Celtic players: Daniel Fergus McGrain.

A self confessed “died in the wool” Rangers man he became a legend for us and imo is still is a legend. In the 1970’s Diabetics was a very much unknown condition and could have destroyed a lesser man. I doubt that Danny would have passed a medical at that time.

I am not comparing footballing ability or “bottle” what I am saying is that a medical condition can be overcome.

I wish JF good fortune if he goes, but if he stays the opportunity is still there to prove many of us wrong.

    Hail, hail.

PS : If Kev Jungle is about , I wonder what he thinks of the way the old board treated Danny in the good old days. ?

  27. Taxi for Jamesie. Never fulfilled his potential. Not helped by playing wide left and cutting in to congested area. A basis in wing play for yonks is hit the byeline and cut back.

  28. mike in toronto on 22nd February 2016 3:52

If James Forrest can’t drive a car without aggravating his sciatica, he will struggle to pass a medical for another professional football club.

Dunno how much lower league English football you see but if JF couldn’t stay fit enough to play for Celtic, he won’t cope with the physicality in that environment.

I really struggle to see him going anywhere of any note.
