Form vagaries of Malmo for Celtic

793

Celtic will play Malmo in the Champions League play-off round, the third time since 2012 they will face champions from Sweden. The main concern for Ronny Deila is the manner in which Malmo disposed of Salzburg 3-0 on Wednesday night, but there is context to put that into. In the previous round the Swedes only managed a 0-0 at home to Lithuanians Zalgiris Vilnius, before winning 0-1 away.

Those three goals against Salzburg, which arrived inside 45 minutes, will be the subject of a lot of research over the next few days.

In 2013 Celtic struggled to blow away the cobwebs against Elfsborg, recording a 1-0 home win and a 0-0 draw away. A year earlier they beat Helsingborgs 2-0 home and away.

The most encouraging aspect for Ronny will be Malmo’s domestic form. They are current 6th in the Allsvenskan after 18 games and will struggle to qualify for Europe next season. A home game against league leaders Gothenburg on Sunday will be Celtic’s most important reconnaissance exercise.

Oh, and put out the flags, Malmo play on grass!!

Far too early in the season to say Ciftci is a failure, He will come good once he is fit and gets some service, I trust in RD. But i think we need at least one other striker with so many games to play. Hoping that Boyata keeps improving and Lustig stays fit. My opinion on VVD going or staying, if he goes i think the club will already have a list to fill his spot and if he stays great. Its where we are now. The big picture is CL football and punt a player and we will always dominate domestic football period.

Thanks for providing some facts and figures about the pros and cons of having the home leg first.

    Any effect in penalty shoot-outs?

  3. I must admit to knowing hee haw about Malmo but I am confident that we will cream them.

In fact we will mollicate them.

Malmo fans were in the Brazen head four years ago, partying with the locals, before going along to Govan and hammering a nail into the now deceased club’s coffin.

Did we not already have all these discussions about how we should be wary about Qarabag and who they beat/drew with/scored against (delete as necessary)? We should respect all teams we play against not be fearful or dismissive about their results against perceived better opposition. At the end of the day our qualification will be dependent on how we perform over two 90 minute games nothing else (apart from maybe a dodgy DOB refereeing performance). Onwards and upwards. These games will take care of themselves. Meanwhile there’s a league to be won and the up and coming Glassico to look forward to.

Out of my sample only 2 ties were decided by penalty shoot out.

    Last yr

Steaua București beat Ludogorets Razgrad 1-0 at home and lost 1-0 away. Ludogorets won pen shoot-out at their home ground.

This yr West Ham beat Birkirkara 1-0 at home and lost 1-0 away. They won the pen shoot-out at the away ground.

Not sure that is enough information to make an informed decision.

  7. I think Malmo are a good side and should not be treated lightly.

They are probably the 2nd best team in the draw.

Unfortunately for them the best are in the green & white hoops.

Cheers. Maybe managers know best, and most I’ve heard asked preferred the home leg second.

    Still, what do they know?

I’ve just read that a recent survey has revealed that 70% of men are w@nkers.

Be careful you may be one of that 70%. They also reckon of that 70%, 100% are huns.

A recent study showed that 36.74% of all statistics are made up.

    :-)

    I contest that assertion ;-)

  12. beatbhoy

Statistically they are right as more teams playing home second do go through.

However, its more important to keep a clean sheet if you do have to play your home game first.

    POG …

. assuming there are 7 billion people in the world, and 49% are men … that means there are just shy of 3.5 billion men …. if 70% of them are wankers, that means there are roughly 2.2 billion wankers in the world, and if 100% of them are zombies, that means there are 2.2 billion zombies ….

    1. but I thought King said there were only 500 million of them. Who is telling porkies?

    2. Either way (500 million or 2.2 billion), I guess they are going to need to expand Ibroke .a.. if they dont all get tickets for the big game tonight, some may end up at the Roddie Frame show tonight. Better warn our posters who were expecting a zombie free show.

Beatbhoy, no the doorbell rang and there was a doorstep salesman at the door.

  18. Without taking too much away from Malmo, the 3-0 win versus Salzburg is and can be viewed as a deceptive result. For many reasons.

    1) Malmo are over half way through their season. Salzburg have only just begun there’s.

    2) Salzburg, as excellent as they were last year, may not be as potent as they were 6months ago.

    3) And even as good as they seemed last season, Salzburg were always suspect to losing goals.

I think a better barometer of Malmo’s form and true capability, is there the other legs they have played in Europe. 2 dodgy performances vs Lithuanians, and losing 2-0 vs Salzburg. Plus their domestic form.

I think the 3-0 victory has sent many into shock and fear. I suspect however they will not be as potent as the Salzburg team we witnessed at Celtic Park some 8 Months ago.

    gender

You may not know that many nonliving things have a gender.

    For example…

    1) Ziploc Bags-

They are Male, because they hold everything in, but you can see right through them.

    2) Copiers-

They are Female, because once turned off, it takes a while to warm them up again. It’s an effective reproductive device if the right buttons are pushed, but can wreak havoc if the wrong buttons are pushed.

    3) Tire-

Male, because it goes bald and it’s often over-inflated.

    4) Hot Air Balloon-

Male, because, to get it to go anywhere, you have to light a fire under it, and of course, there’s the hot air part.

    5) Sponges-

Female, because they’re soft, squeezable and retain water.

    6) Web Page-

Female, because it’s always getting hit on.

    7) Subway-

Male, because it uses the same old lines to pick people up.

    8) Hourglass-

Female, because over time, the weight shifts to the bottom.

    9) Hammer-

Male, because it hasn’t changed much over the last 5,000 years, but it’s handy to have around.

    10) Remote Control-

Female…… Ha! You thought it’d be male. But consider this-it gives a man pleasure, he’d be lost without it, and while he doesn’t always know the right buttons to push, he keeps trying.

  20. Anyway, fancy the Buddies tonight to do Warburton’s mob by a wide margarine.

Off to bet them on the spread.

  21. 25th of August is ma birthday, I’ll be on Arran, what’s the best pub i.e. is there a Celtic minded hostilry on the island I can watch the game? I’ll be at the Auchrannie resort.

  22. BAWSMAN

Arran is a fairly even handed wee place, off there shortly for the Highland Games weekend, always a great weekend.

Nothing on Celtic Bars, the McLaren Hotel in Brodick shows up as Celtic friendly, whatever that meand but all pubs that have BT Sports will show the game.

The Ormidale is the nearest place to Auchrannie but for sure the Douglas Hotel just across from the ferry will have the game on in the bar, they have all sports channels.

  23. BAWSMAN

Checked TripAdvisor the McLaren Hotel is closed and due to be demolished so the Douglas Hotel will be your best bet.

  24. Lads getting worried about Malmo wait till we are playing Bayern in the group stages, what will ye be like then.
