Form vagaries of Malmo for Celtic

793

Celtic will play Malmo in the Champions League play-off round, the third time since 2012 they will face champions from Sweden. The main concern for Ronny Deila is the manner in which Malmo disposed of Salzburg 3-0 on Wednesday night, but there is context to put that into. In the previous round the Swedes only managed a 0-0 at home to Lithuanians Zalgiris Vilnius, before winning 0-1 away.

Those three goals against Salzburg, which arrived inside 45 minutes, will be the subject of a lot of research over the next few days.

In 2013 Celtic struggled to blow away the cobwebs against Elfsborg, recording a 1-0 home win and a 0-0 draw away. A year earlier they beat Helsingborgs 2-0 home and away.

The most encouraging aspect for Ronny will be Malmo’s domestic form. They are current 6th in the Allsvenskan after 18 games and will struggle to qualify for Europe next season. A home game against league leaders Gothenburg on Sunday will be Celtic’s most important reconnaissance exercise.

Oh, and put out the flags, Malmo play on grass!!

  1. BLANTYRETIM IS PRAYING FOR THE KNOX FAMILY on 7TH AUGUST 2015 5:01 PM

    Wrong again BT

His horse wasn’t even in first 6.

Typically I had no link with London hq. They had a total power cut so communication impossible till it was effectively too late. How fitting!

I’d done all my ‘stuff’ by yesterday so was able to write oodles of thank you’s today.

    Weird feeling.

  4. Great draw for Celtic now taking on the Swedish champions, in what is bound to be another highly formidable assignment, over two legs. With the tremendous achievement of eliminating Champion sides, one after another Celtic Park will be bouncing when the Scandanavians come to Glasgow with a very creditable European pedigree.

Both clubs are very evenly matched and another 1-0 win with a clean sheet at Celtic Park would be most welcome before a ball is kicked.

More than half a team signed since the Maribor disaster, and a years more experience will ensure the Celtic ticket office is ‘run off it’s feet’, and a sell out crowd couldn’t be dismissed at this stage, with ticket sales already off and running.

Looking forward to being there on another incomparable Celtic Park European night.

KevJungle posted something along the lines he would find out today whether he would be posting from this world or in the jungle in the next.

Kev all the best, hope you got good news.

  6. Kevin J. Keep the faith and keep on keeping on.

Malmo. It is what it is. Hopefully we will be in the Champions league. That’s certainly where I want Celtic to be.

Howevaaah. If it all does go pear shaped (which I hope and pray it doesn’t) we are still playing European football until Christmas at least.

We all talk about how we need to get out of the league we are currently in. This ensures we do that by default.

  7. Given the optimism…. i allow myself to look ahead..

Of Pot 1 Teams, i would like Bayern Munich (For change of scenery, and crazy beer measures in Munich..lovely jubbly)

Of Pot 2 Teams, Athletico Madrid, wuld be good ( cant say no to a Madrid trip now can you)

And beyond that, Nicosia would be good (gotta love Cyprus , and more importantly the 4 to 6 points effect.

  8. I wasn’t paying any attention to the zombie monkey hun fixtures, but just encountered three of them young wans in Erskine Morrison’s, blue redtop 32s on. At the bread stack grumbling to each other about whether its blue or orange wrappers that are best.

    They are seriously deluded .

Next aisle I let my ynwa video play on the phone.

    If looks could kill.

    Hehehehe.

    Anyways, the bread team 11.

I hope it all goes stale.

  9. Malmo were the team I wanted.

Fewest surprises- we have knowledge of their style of play.

If they can accommodate Berget and Djurdic in their starting 11, we have better players than that.

Every match is tricky but Israel and Serbia would have been harder teams, Albania would have nutter fans, and Astana is long trek with this team looking to have more flair than the Kazack team we faced.

    Happy with Malmo

  10. That second celtiblog, there is a brilliantly funny reply to GER by James Forrest,

Won’t cut and paste cos its a wee bit weary, but its a real laugh out loud one

  11. Very worrying posts re Kev Jungle. I was under impression a couple of weeks ago that he had got the all clear.

Obviously I got it wrong, hopefully he will have got some positive news today. Prayers & Best Wishes to you Kev.

  12. Been a while bhoyos, well pleased with the draw. I’m living in Malmö and these guys are thinking very highly of themselves against us. If we get 2 decent league games before then we should be ok against them. They’ve sold their best players that got them into champions league last year. Good game plan that Ronnys more than capable of and we’re in the group stages.

One thing to watch out for is that their fans are nuts. Their stadium will rock as much as ours so I’d want to see a full on attack in the 1st leg.

Same here .. I can’t C&P your moniker without adding the rest of the page ..

The whiter the bread, the sooner they’re dead ..

    ..

St Mirren to win later ..

  14. Gerryfaethebrig on

Just logged on, Ian Murrays St Mirren are 11/1 with both teams scoring, surely a team dropping a division and out to impress a new manager should fancy their chances at that level, 7/2 just for any win

Malmo, not to be underestimated but I bet you MalmoQuickNews will be gutted, yet again, quietly confident

Lennybhoy your friend’s family are in my prayers

The money for Champions League has increased this year.

Participation bonus is now 12m euros.

Television segment has doubled for UK teams. Our last appearance we got just under 8m euros, so should be around 16 million this time out.

So 28m euros, plus whatever we get paid for playoff round, plus 1.5m euro per win in group stage and 0.5 m per draw.

That’s before we sell a ticket or a program.

Reaching the last 16 is another 5.5 million euro.

So huge money on the Malmo games. PL will be more nervous than us :-)

  16. JimmyQuinnsBits on

Well ain’t this a swanky place now

    Are us tinks still allowed?

And where’s the jacuzzi? It’s ok, I washed my feet in May… always do it for the summer.

Malmo will be an interesting one, a couple of games before then will see us getting back up to speed… Malmo and Saltzburg have changed too much in terms of personnel to read too much in to the last result imo

Perspective on Malmo result the other night. Only 3 Salzburg players started the game and played at Celtic Park last season with 1 other who come off the bench. Salzburg have had a massive change of personnel so tie is definitely there for us, if we perform.

  19. Just popped in to wish Kevj the best of luck with his health issues. Take care Kev and fight all the way. YNWA.

Away back to oblivion were I don’t embarrass certain Celtic supporters.
