Rugby refereeing leaving football in wake

336

Honestly, see these rugby types complaining about a referee, don’t they know these things even themselves out over the season? What’s that? You mean the maths suggest that random events don’t even themselves out with small sample sizes, such as cup ties (sample of 1) and games against rivals (same of 4)?

The ‘even themselves out’ brigade could do with some remedial maths, it’s statistical hokum.

Within 24 hours of a mistake World Rugby called it so. No ‘referees’ union’ stonewalling, no defending the indefensible, no conspiracy to hide a lie, no tolerance of unacceptable standards, no fans left wondering why their game was misaligned with the rules. Without delay, World Rugby set the record straight, there is literally nothing more to see here.

Compare and contrast with our own sport in Scotland. The ‘referees’ union’ is alive and well, indefensible decisions are excused by a myriad of excuses, unacceptable standards have been tolerated for decades, instead of an explanation, fans are left with a vacuum into which they attempt to construct reason (which is very unhelpful). And although a referee quickly declared his own lie, the culture of the SFA was such that it was not declared beyond the Association until after a whistle-blower made sure it was known. Fifa is not the only football organisation bedevilled by a culture of cronyism.

Scottish football is under no pressure from above to improve. Fifa and Uefa thrive in the culture which has recently been revealed – largely by US prosecutors and journalists, some of whom have been whistling in the wind for 30 years. This percolates down to national associations, who are filled with office holders, appointed by the same patronage culture which allowed Michel Platini pocket 2m Swiss francs from Sep Blatter’s Fifa.

Nor is there sufficient pressure on the SFA from member clubs, apart from Celtic and one or two others, who are viewed as pariahs by some at Hampden, for the persistent flow of DVD-enclosed performance complaints.

It’s not easy being a referee; good ones are invaluable. They will continue to make mistakes at all levels, in all sports, but it should be easy to have an open culture which recognises the interests of the paying spectators. Just as World Rugby does. Protecting referees with a wall of silence is, in fact, not protecting them at all.

Aweeeeeee, now it looks like a demand to you, well if that’s how you see it then fine, to me I was making a point and hoping Celtic saw it the same way as me, but they didn’t , I’ll be doing what I do on behalf of myself as I have done many many times, when I’m not representing anyone, you can on the other hand spin all you want as is your prerogative fill your boots, and yes this is the second time you have asked me about it, trust me, but look back by all means.

  4. Bada Bing!!

Similar situation to facing Motherwell with Mark McGhee back, then.

    Hopefully, with the same scoreline!

i can assure you the Living Wage campaign is alive and well and the Celtic Trust will again this year at the PLC Agm propose that Celtic become a Living Wage employer.

This will be the third AGM in a row we have done this . In the previous two years we have had the overwhelming support of the meeting and have only been defeated by the Board using the millions of shares held by them to out vote the Trust resolution.

Let me make it very clear.

This is no political campaign run by a few punters with an anti Board agenda. The Living Wage campaign is fully in accord with the founding principles of our club. Last year over 10,000 of our fellow supporters agreed with us and signed our petition in support of the Living Wage for Celtic employees.

The Board produced ,at the AGM, their “rabbit “from the Chair’s hat indicating that the club would pay the LV rate . They did so but only after eight months delay and are still not a Living Wage employer.

This means the workers rate will not increase each year in line with the change in the national Living Wage.

The Trust will continue to press for Celtic to do the right thing on the Living Wage and of course wiil also bring other issues of concern to the Celtic support to the attention of the club at our regular meetings with the officers of Celtic including the Chief Executive and the Supporters’Liason officer.

We are a voice for the support but that voice could be much stronger and louder if we had more members .

So why dont more of you think about joining the Trust.

We will be starting a membership drive very soon so look out for us at Celtic Park or go to our website and follow us on twitter

He’s seen as a flop, largely due to the excessive price tag but he had a 1 in 2 strike rate up here – which isn’t too bad really. It’s far higher than he achieved in any other league.

I agree that paying the Living Wage annually should be what Celtic should aspire to do but not that it becomes a contractual obligation to do so each year without looking at where the money is to come from annually.

I don’t know how much extra it would cost to reach the LW level each year but it will have a cost and that cost will have to be met from somewhere in the club’s budget.

I doubt the cost would be so high it could not be met in the margins of departmental budgets but everyone should know the cost each year before deciding on paying or even not paying.

I think that if the ability to decide annually whether to pay or not under sensible guidelines were built in it would be extremely difficult for Celtic not to aspire to live up to the Brother Walford ethos, but still retain overall authority annually on how the budget was spent.

Here is my email, I don’t see demands as you said.

I would hope that Celtic are not waiting on a match report from Sat. With that bizarre display of refereeing by the officials, this can not be let go, to a man every Celtic supporter I have spoken to are looking for action from the club to back us up, it’s alright us running amok on social media in our on web sites but it gets us no where, the club has to say something on our behalf.

More so even though we won on Sat. Doesent take away the honest mistakes from the very same man who was with the cabal at hampden in the semi final against ICT.

I’m afraid JP if the club do not engage with some sort of way about this to the SFA, then the club had better batten down the hatches as there will be a s…. Load of people wanting to know why?

I back my club to the hilt at every opportunity, and I’m afraid if the club just sit there and say nothing and do not back us up will open up one big can of worms

The Celtic supporters are livid, and they have every right to be.

    Thank you

    Tony Donnelly.

    Hail Hail.

I said what I felt, told him about Celtic supporters being p….d off and angry ( although not in those words) but at no time did I make demands, I said in the email how I felt, no more, no less.

  10. Don Pepe My main question is/was are or is there anyone employed with Celtic at this present time involved in these talks?

The Trust will continue to press for Celtic to do the right thing on the Living Wage and of course wiil also bring other issues of concern to the Celtic support to the attention of the club at our regular meetings with the officers of Celtic including the Chief Executive and the Supporters’Liason officer. – See more at

The CEO and the SLO are employed by Celtic………………………..looking through the round window today children……………all together now the wheels on the bus…………………….

  11. The good news is that Solskjaer, given the last-minute nature of the appointment to his new old job, will have to translate one of his Cardiff pre-match team talks for tomorrow night.

  12. The living wage?…..

Surely, deals like….the reduced negotiated-deal for Derk ‘after’ he’d failed his medical coz he was injured….why bring him in at all?….so that, the CEO’s CV would look good ie: we’re signing players from Ajax?

Was Jozo injured when he was signed?

Was always injured-Lustig injured when he was signed?

Should PL’s bonus be annulled as a result of this mis-managed-waste of club-budget-resources…as, after all he signs che cheques?

  16. I’m sitting here thinking…, about Chris Graham, Sevco fan chief and cartoonist.

If he hadn’t tweeted his obscene drawing about Mohammed, Rangers would have had an opportunity to tout for investment in the middle east, as unlikely as it seems.

As it is, he has helped cut off potential support from er, 1.57 billion people.

Well done Chris, and thank you for your efforts. Best of luck with all your future endeavours.

‘Another myth concerning the coat-of-arms is that there was a mix up, between Kristiansund’s and Molde’s intended shield. The Dano-Norwegian government officials in charge of the giving of the coats, had a party to remember the momentous occasion and became too drunk and hungover to remember which was which, and so Molde got the coat with a whale (which are scarce in between the Romsdal fjords) and Kristiansund got the waterfall (since Molde is on the mainland and Kristiansund lies in the open sea, it would be more likely that the waterfall was intended for Molde’s mountains and the whales for Kristiansund.)’

How often have I posted here that backing has to be a two way street.

Sadly, historically Celtic have not wanted to rock the boat.

Significantly, in the exception to the above, the Eire Flag affair, Robert Kelly was backed by his Ibrox counterpart.

  20. KevJ (my leader), it’s really strange; everyone could see Derk was a turkey even before we signed him. De Boers’ language made it clear during negotiations, and that was whilst he was trying to keep a lid on it.

Even so, he surpassed every expectation of turkeyness. He doesn’t even bother to engage with the press to let us know his situation. Probably because he is embarrassed.

Enjoy your millions Derk. You wouldn’t have even made my school team in the 80s.

I read your e-mail the first time you posted it. And I congratulate you on it.

Temperate yet pointed, everything that an opening gambit should be.

And you’re right-it doesn’t contain demands for action. The post of yours from earlier did. Which was my point.

Anyway, speaking of points, you have the right to reply-of course-but I think we’ll leave it at that.

Your other question, are any Celtic staff actively involved in the LW campaign-many of us on here have experience of employment without Union recognition. If fighting for that extra 10% puts the original 100% at risk, sometimes decisions have to be made.

That is when others need to step up to the plate. Society is about protecting the vulnerable, and I’m pretty sure you’ve done so yourself in the past.

Not everything that is suggested which is against the wishes of the board is per se anti-board. Sometimes it’s about what you believe in.

Tony,I know your heart is as Celtic as mine is,and we’re allowed to disagree on how we support Celtic. But,again, not everything is anti-board just for the hell of it.

And if my behaviour or posts are inappropriate and not within the COC then I’m sure I will be told or reprimand at some time.

But just to be clear now your not a Hun are you! Because that’s the only ones I DO a try to annoy and hope they don’t come here, I’m just asking, so don’t take it personal….oh here wait a minute?
