Some reasons why Celtic will drop a lot of points

960

I was surprised Ronny Deila thought immediately after the game that Dedryck Boyata’s red card was valid, from the angle behind the goal it looked a well-time tackle, but let’s deal with the manager’s complaint against the player, who put a challenge in when wrong side of the attacker.

We’ve see three Celtic central defenders in this position in recent weeks: Efe against Ross County, Erik against Inverness and Dedryck last night. Erik was outpaced by Jordan Roberts but instead of risking a challenge from behind his opponent, he stayed on his feet and forced Roberts to shoot under pressure. Efe clumsily barged into his opponent and Dedryck went to ground.

All three got their starting positions wrong, which could have cost a goal, but Ambrose and Boyata compounded the problem by attempting a recovery, also from a wrong position. Sviatchenko chose to put pressure on the player and leave matters up to his goalkeeper. Erik made the right decision, Efe and Dedryck made wrong decisions.

And before Erik relaxes in the glow of praise, it was his unnecessary barge into an opponent which conceded the foul which led to the corner kick Accies equalised through. Don’t give away stupid fouls and you don’t allow opponents to fire the ball into your box.

And yes, the goal we lost came from a corner kick (I’m assuming those who were animated earlier in the season about zonal marking somehow overlook the same lack of ball-winning skills from the same players now we’re marking man-for-man). I’ve never known a team to lose so many goals from corners. We have a collection of players who cannot follow the flight of a football when launched into their box from a corner.

I know there’s a belief that you cannot practice penalty kicks, as the pressure of hitting them during a match changes everything. This is nonsense. Our poor penalty conversion rate over the last five or six years has cost us trophies. Ironically, John Collins has the best penalty conversion rate of any player in Celtic history (who’s taken more than 5).  You would think he’d be able to sort this.

Poor technique is a consequence of poor preparation.

When Leigh Griffiths opened the scoring from the penalty spot it came as a great relief, as until then we were unable to create a genuine chance. A big part of the job at Celtic is breaking down packed defences away from home. There are largely two ways to achieve this:

1. Master the act of quick and precise passing

2. Have target men and wide players who are excellent at crossing the ball.

If we don’t have either play in our locker we’re going to drop a lot of points.

CLUNKS, you say we need to “calling out cheats in the Scottish game” I’m asking you to give examples of where it has happened before? And especially when it actually made a difference?

So the players ain’t doing it for the manager. What a lot of tosh. And you want to get rid of the manager.

I’m not sure that would be the opinion of the players.

  7. clunks,

We will see soon enough the impact of Ronny’s comments.

No real point going Mad Cyril continuously until the next few games have been decided.

Ronny has a unique way of doing things. Let’s let him do it.

“Ok, honestly, how do you rate him against previous Celtic managers and how do you think he’ll fair against European opposition if he’s kept on next season? ”

Ronny has achieved nothing yet to rank him anywhere in the top half of Celtic managers I have known. He also has no record of playing for Celtic which counts for some people. However, I do not see a visionary, a Norwegian diddy, a cheap option, a PE teacher, a No Plan B merchant, or a “just a nice guy”.

The way Ronny talks about football impresses me as a guy who is grounded and who knows that talk is cheap. He knows he was brought about to change the structure and direction of the club from the pragmatic football of WGS and the “here and now” winning attitude of NFL. Ronny has been charged with using the absence of the deid club to make us a fitter team that can cope with the continued regular predations by richer clubs and leagues, to produce player development that will leave us a stronger club to face the challenges we are going to face. He is a development coach and that is what we need.

It is pie-in-the-sky thinking to believe we can cheque-book our way out of our marginal situation by taking a Redknapp or MON approach to getting in a core of tried and tested players (or in Redknapp’s case- a glut of them). When we cannot attract McGeady or Hooper back because our wage ceiling is too low for them, then it is delusional to believe that managers like MON, Redknapp, Moyes or Brendan Rogers are going to come here when they are not yet damaged in the eyes of the EPL or English Championship, where they will get paid 4 times what we can afford. As thinking, that is right up there with “Where did the Seville money go?” – the very reason this blog started.

We might, I admit, get Malky Mackay to come up from England because he is truly toxic and won’t get job offers there. We could get Ron Atkinson too for the same reasons. We could easily get John Hughes, Paul Hartley or Alan Stubbs too but it would make a mockery of all the jibes directed at Ronny Deila when he came.

I have posted before about this “cheap option” jibe and the inexperienced jibe ( I have the post on file ready to bring up every time we become forgetful). Celtic have never employed big name, sought after managers. We have never sourced managers with vast Euro experience. Ronny Deila is clearly in the top 5 of managers with a track record and Euro experience (club level management) compared with any of our more respected managers. Most Celtic managers had done little in management before coming here, most were inexperienced managers, and most had no Euro experience.

The only two managers that cost us money to source were Tony Mowbray, who failed and lost his willingness to fight, and Tommy Burns, for whom we, uniquely, were ordered to pay compensation to his previous club because Fergus was honest and did not lie. Neither of them won a league. There is no correlation between how much we paid to recruit them and how well they did for us.

The great difficulty we face with judging Roony is knowing whether we are dealing with someone who is laying foundations and that is why there is no sign of a house yet, or someone who is laying bricks haphazardly and that is why there is no house yet nor will there ever be one.

Dario Gradi joined Crewe as manager in 1983. It took 6 years before they won promotion after 25 years as a basement club. He took them all the way to the top of the, now Championship, at Xmas 2004 before he sold Dean Ashton to Norwich and they started a slide back to their natural level.

Alex Ferguson joined Man U in 1986 as manager. It took him 4 years to win a trophy, the FA Cup, and 6 years to win the league. He stuck to his development task but he was very lucky not to have been sacked as he was subject to the same jibes of being a Scottish diddy who won an easy league, no plan B, a cheap option who lost the dressing room because he tackled the worst of the drinking culture there. He went on to be, arguably, the most successful British manager of all time. Now, you cannot find one person who owns up to having made those jibes against him but there were legions of them. They were all convinced they were right and, if the board had sacked him before 1990 or 1992, they would have remained convinced they were right because he would have had to retreat back to Scotland again as a failure.

Now Ronny may fail to be granted any more time. The majority of the Celtic support have turned against him. But, even if he does get sacked, I will remain unconvinced by the cheap arguments re cheap option, inexperienced, came from a poorer league, no Euro background etc; because those arguments will remain the nonsense that they are.

If it ends in failure, it will be because what he has done so far has not borne fruit and his sacking will damage him and us. He may well get sacked because there is a climate of fear around them appearing in the top league and, potentially, getting the odd good result against us. I am sanguine that, if they survive financially, they will beat us again at some point and, at some point further, might take the title from us. I see no point in worrying about either of those two inevitabilities (inevitable subject to their financial health).

The corollary of the argument that RD has left us unprepared to face the mighty Warb’s team is that he has only had one opportunity to gain the cheap kudos earned by a win over them. Nothing would make Ronny’s life at Celtic easier than a chance to rub their noses in the stink of their own inadequacy.

If he goes, I believe he will leave as the only Celtic manager ( I don’t think Frank Connor counts) to leave with a 100% winning record against the ibrox team.

  11. eddieinkirkmichael on

Clunks glad you admit it has never achieved anything and it never will. The only way to beat them is by scoring more goals and not giving the ref an easy excuse to send you off.

  12. Clunks,

Not sure what you are trying to say.

If a person steals from me, I will rightly be annoyed, they must have needed it more than me.

I’ve had tools stolen from me from a person (accomodation in the city centre) in work, I was annoyed Big Time. He must have needed that screwdriver.

Who knows why anyone does what they do.

  13. In years to come the early 21st century documentation of Scottish football will be described by a new adjective in English….. Savillesque…in its denial of the immoral cheating, of its corruption and it’s depravity.

  14. SFTB,

The Norwegian project is out of his depth…..by a long way. He was scouted as a no 2 by Lawwell.

He should never have been appointed as manager.

The “comparison” with Fergie is flawed.

Deila has lost the vast majority of the support and needs to be sacked ASAP.

That got feck all to do with it

What particular “that” are you referring to? If it is the Lennon :Izzaguire link, then it is a comparable situation. Neil publicly criticised his player. He did not deal with it solely within the dressing room. And he did not lose the dressing room or Izzy’s confidence afterwards. The only difference is that Izzy was clearly guilty of a dive whereas Dedryk’s was not clear cut. The principle of criticising in public or in private is still relevant and, as I showed (I can provide other examples) – not that rare.

Boyata put in a great last gasp tackle, connected with the ball and got sent off.

    Wrongly.

If it was a great last gasp tackle, it would not have been mistaken for a foul. I was at the game and most of us behind the goal thought he had fouled their player. Only when I saw the replay were doubts put in my mind. I was still shocked that a red card was produced but I, and many others, watching live thought it was a foul. Ronny spoke after the game without benefit of replay. Two respected pundits with no axes to grind against Celtic, debated this on Sportscene and came to opposite conclusions. The tackle was neither a clear cut foul nor a clear cut great tackle. It left room for a ref to act and Craig Thompson took full advantage. The only question for Ronny was- “Did Dedryk need to challenge on the ground? Could he have affected the play without doing so?

Then the manager comes out and takes leave of his vision and says actually he did not contact the ball and it was a sending off.

Again, from the dugout, he saw nothing other than what I saw from the stands. It looked like a foul to me and many Celtic fans with the same view and no replay. Only those watching side on from the Main Stand, with a clearer view had strong doubts about the award of the foul. Now, flashing the red, that’s another debate, but, obviously, Ronny wants the defenders not to dive in as often as they do. He said something similar about Izzy’s red against Ajax, I think, without making it personal with the player.

    Did boyata catch the ball?

If its a yes (and the replays clearly show he did) then RD is erm, talking testicles. (b~ll@£k$)

After watching the replay 3 or 4 times, I think Boyata touches the ball, therefore it is doubtful Ronny is right. But Ronny never had 3 or 4 looks, did he? So, it is only his failure to take the Arsene Wenger/ Corporal Schultz approach that we should criticize Ronny for.

    He needs to go.

He does not have the b~ll@£k$ to stand up for him or his players.

That is a non-sequitur. He stands up plenty. Let us see on Wednesday if the players are up in arms or not. We will face a Dundee side unbeaten in their last 7 matches

  29. Macjay

I’m off to my kip now.

We have talked about this before.

Having Europe as the only criterion of success is a barrier that no other Celtic manager has had to face. It is only raised as a “must do” criterion because “thems” are absent from our league. It is exactly the same thinking they indulged in when they were in the middle of their 9iar- “Celtic are irrelevant- it’s what we do in Europe that counts”.

I’d like more success in Europe too but there are very few clubs from the peripheral poor leagues that have come anywhere near our, admittedly middling, European record this millenium. And, unless we get a change of league, strap yourself in for more of the same. The downhill journey is driven by economic disparities and not by a Norwegian diddy or a skinflint Board. Change either or both and you still face the same hurdle.

As a support, we much prefer to fix the blame than to fix the problem.
