Tom, Davie, Development Squad face Valencia

Good luck to the Development Squad for their Uefa Youth League one-off cup tie against Valencia this evening. A win would see Celtic proceed to the quarter final – no mean feat when you consider the way some bigger league clubs harvest scores of youth players from across the globe.

Kick-off is 5pm, if you can get to Celtic Park. It’s not THE Champions League, but it’s an important metric we should follow.

Delighted Davie Hay and Tom Boyd are  Celtic Ambassadors. I see enough of what the Celtic support to here to know the value of the club, but we can never take these values for granted. The Celtic Movement needs leaders. Davie and Tom have been informal ambassadors of the club for years, as many of you can testi

  1. I’m outta here for Lent ( not that anybody will notice). Don’t care for the tone in here or the self absorbed bitchiness. Also, too many ‘experts’ who are slating the team and manager when they patently have no idea what they’re talking about. Celtic are living within their means (radical, eh) and are trying to build a predominantly young, Scottish team. KT is now a regular, Nesbitt will not be far away with the young teams showing that there is great talent in the process of coming through.

A radical sea change takes time and can be a bumpy ride. I for one, am not for throwing the captain over the side because shamefully inept, desperate hun idiots in the media say I should.

Forza Ronny and his young guns on the rise.

I think Sutton is an ambassador for the Club – he has the interests of the club at heart not the Board… We shouldn’t confuse these things imo

Anybody who had personal dealings with Sutton will tell you the same thing. He’s not a nice man.

He failed in management. He went bankrupt (He offers nothing more constructive than “back the manager with more money” funnily enough)

He should take a step back and think, if Chris Sutton was available in 2016 would Celtic be able to afford his transfer fee?

If Chris Sutton was available in 2016 and Celtic could afford the fee, would he play in Scotland for half or a third of the wage available in England?

Chris was a great player but paying for MON’s team put Celtic on the road to ruin. It was a path we couldn’t follow forever without ending up like Der Hun.

Even though Chris was well paid, we had plenty of failures with him as a player. He’s skint and would happily take a penny from anybody to stick the boot into the club.

You are both of a different view to me which I accept but failure to me is

“EUROPE- I don’t have high demands/ expectations in Europe. No delusion of lifting cups but performances under Deila can never be accepted as success, surely?

Recent cup exit to Ross County.”

The Ross County game was disappointing. However, that’s cup football for you. We were all over them early on and a mistake compounded with a poor referee decision (it was a yellow) gave the team an uphill battle.

I’d be more worried if were being played off the park when it was 11 vs 11.

Nobody would argue that the results in Europe were poor. It’s obviously a big issue for Ronny. But if we are going to bring in a young coach and players, we can’t expect them to get it right every time. I’d like to see Ronny get another crack at it.

As I’ve pointed out before, Jurgen Klopp didn’t get it right in Europe on his first two attempts. Unfortunately, Europe has no guarantees.

“Given we are spending 6+ times nearest rivals we are neck and neck in the league and without a settled starting line up.”

We can’t control what Aberdeen do against the rest of the league. All we can do is beat them when we play them which we have failed to do as well as last season. Both games were lost due to set pieces which has been an obvious issue that hasn’t been sorted.

The settled line up has been lacking yes. It’s been a combination of bad luck and Ronny’s decision to change things. However, assuming the team doesn’t suffer a raft on injuries, I reckon at least 8 of the starting lineup (Gordon, Lustig, Sviat, Boyata, Tierney, Brown, Biton, Griffiths) will be starting every week over the next 6 weeks. Ronny has to make a decision about the other 3.

“Numerous poor signings ( I’d add to that too many signings – hence no clear picture of a starting 11)”

Every team has poor signings. The scouting system does need to go under review but I’m pleased with the January signings so far.

“Increasing alienation of fans manifest in empty seats and dwindling revenue income.”

We could argue all night about why this is happening. I suggest that there are plenty of reasons why people are staying away such as: saturation of football on TV, improvements in streaming, difficult economic conditions, lack of competition from Der Hun, Police targeting Celtic fans

I share some of your concerns. I’m skeptical that a new board and coach would fix these issues.

  3. Tonydonnelly67

Like any loan, you agree to terms and conditions before taking it out.

If one of these is that there is no requirement to repay until you are earning just over 17k, why would you be paying it back from the very little money left over from that salary at the end of the month, following tax and national insurance deductions?

The point is, graduates hopefully earning more than this, will be paying it back, those who are in work, not earning enough, are doing nothing wrong at all.

    TONYDONNELLY67 on 10TH FEBRUARY 2016 1:05 PM

The payback in loans unpaid is 40% what some are not getting here is, here in Scotland you don’t need to pay the loan back till the coarse your taking is finished, that’s my point, get a job, pay back what you owe, doesent matter what you pay back cut a deal, but pay it back, don’t just walk away and not pay it, like Huns.

    ——————————–

thanks for explaining, well done, thats that cleared up.

    i blame catholic schools.

  5. As BEATBHOY states, two parties freely and willingly enter into a loan agreement with a very specific set of terms and conditions around interest rates and repayments. Not exactly parasitic.

  6. You don’t have the choice about paying your loan out

They take it straight out of my salary every month

We are all of a similar mind I suspect. Blogs tend to polarise views as we get down to binary decisions. Keep or sack manager? Change or support the Board?

Actually for me neither of these decisions are straight forward or likely to work on their own. For me it’s more about a change of strategy/ direction.

I accept we are living within our means but I also believe we can take managed risks. I’d personally prefer more £5m players than multiple £1.5m. I also recognise not many £5m players want to play in Scotland. Hence why European success is important not just as a revenue stream but as a recruitment and retention tool.

I ham up my monomaniac obsession with PL and his ‘grossly inflated £20k/ week salary’ ( Auld Bertie- that’s a self paradyfor your benefit) but I do question this as it’s morally wrong in my view but wrong commercially when we are down scaling operations.

So Failure is probably a strong statement. I think it’s as close to the mark as Success.

Right now we are treading water but the tide is coming in..

  8. If I may step in here, if we win tonight then we are in the final 16. Here’s a very brief summary of the UEFA Youth League set up

32 teams (same teams as in the big boys competition) took place in a similar league format – 8 groups of 4 playing each otehr home and away. The 8 winners of that have automatically qualified for the last 16.

The runners up from those 8 groups are in the play-off round and all 8 of them will play away from home.

Meanwhile, a knock out tournament has been progressing featuring a different 32 teams – typically the youth teams of the Champions from the remaining countries, so Celtic included. We’ve come through the first 2 rounds (home and away knock out) and we are in the last 8 of those 32 teams.

The 8 ‘knock-out’ survivors play the 8 group runners up in a one-off game. We play Valencia tonight and if we win we’re in the last 16.

And some of you complained that the Last Man Standing rules were convoluted…. ;-)

  9. You get a loan, you pay it back, can’t afford it, do without, or get it and don’t pay it back, your a parasite, why should I pay for your loan? Because I played fare and you didn’t, I’m missing something right?

  10. I’ve lived in Scotland, England and Ireland and have only experienced the hostility to tertiary education in Scotland.

Most countries embrace the model that this education results in higher tax take over your life, despite the zero income for four to five years and the burden of loans. This tax take pays for the next generation.

    TD,

Notwithstanding the debate on the benefits or not of tertiary education, your opening post today was aimed at the political and religious debate overnight and this morning. You don’t need a degree to have that debate and you don’t know the backgrounds of the posters who had a great debate. That is what has annoyed people.

there was really no need for it and it was not anything to do with differing opinions.

I made the mistake of listening to the awful Radio Clyde phone in last night. (I know I only have myself to blame but I refuse to listen to Radio Scotland after the recent Ian Ferguson interview in which 3 of the 7 questions asked were (1) tell us about the time you talked Gazza into playing the imaginary flute at Celtic Park (2) Tell us about the fight with DiCanio and what really went on in the tunnel and (3) tell us about the house next to Parkhead that your parents lived in and how Celtic fans would through bricks at the windows [I kid you not, if you haven’t heard it do a listen back].

Anyway to Clyde, I refuse to listen Mondays and Fridays (Keevin’s, I’m going to say something negative about Celtic to get their fans phoning and arguing with me and TRIFC fans agreeing with me ( and Johnstone from the flat earth society)). Maybe it’s changed a bit since I last listened but last nights show had callers on who must be planted, nobody is surely that stupid?

here is a selection of the dross

    1. How many of the Celtic squad could get a game for Rangers (the answer is clearly 11 but this drove 6 calls, including Celtic fans agreeing Waghorn and Wallace and possibly Halliday !). one TRIFC fan arguing that their 2 centre backs are better than the Croatian and Danish international centre backs.

    2. Their pundit claimed Patrick Roberts is now one of the highest paid Celtic players at CP, despite the fact Celtic are paying only a fraction of his wages ( they have no idea of the financial arrangements around this loan but don’t let it get in the way of an anti Celtic point).

    3. Dave King is waiting until summer to spend big on Rangers and win the league next year……….

    4. Rangers will buy 5 players in the summer, but only back up players as first team is good enough, on a par with Hearts this year. (No mention of were the money would come from or how the Hearts comparison is arrived at).

    5. The 2 players (whoever they may be) they bought from Accrington Stanley are top quality (that’s why they are at Accrington Stanley of course and don’t mention they were not bought, both free transfers who they couldn’t afford to bring in early.)

    6. The daddy of them all from Roger Hannah, the league will be so exciting next year with a real challenge to Celtic if Rangers are back………………………

I have learned my lesson, will mention in confession and promise never to listen again.

Alternatively we could just let them starve and freeze to death?

I’d be keen for Celtic to take a lead in including disenfranchised fans – perhaps allowing free entry to evening games in return for peddle power to generate electricity to power floodlights. We could seat all the a led body poor at the corners. Any surplus energy created can be sent to Peter Lawwells driveway…

Not sure Lustig’s boat has sailed. He has played a lot more games than normal this season and maybe that is catching up with him a bit. If Janko hadn’t been injured I’m sure he’d have came in for a few games now and again to give ML a break.

Also our system requires the full-backs to get forward a lot. Maybe a wee tweak and put a right-footed player ahead of him to provide the width at least until Janko is fit again.

If you have to sweep streets to pay back what you owe, so be it, and you’ll be a better person for it, I employed many students, and made sure they got every hour they needed, they all did well, doing all sorts of jobs, and they all paid there own way, and to this day they still keep in touch, and I see them when I go over there, all married(well most) with families now, they worked hard and got paid well because they tried, and all the world loves that.
