10-in-a-row, McGarvey, Murray and more

1472

The 10-in-a-Row CQN Charity Golf Day at Aberdour was a great success yesterday.  The irrepressible Frank McGarvey spoke about his formative years in Easterhouse and beyond, with special mentions of his legendary first and last games for Celtic.

Len Murray returned six years after his previous appearance, and spoke with humour and authority, but most of all with a burning support for Celtic.

The event raised money for The Cookie Jar Foundation, founded in memory of 19-year-old Christopher Coutts, who died of Hodkin’s Lymphoma last year and for the work of Glasgow the Caring City.

Christopher Coutts’ father, David, demonstrated a vein finder.  A vein finder is the size of a torch and has a light which shines on the arm and allows veins to be seen.

When Christopher was seriously ill medics often had trouble finding a vein for an injection, attempts were traumatic and distressing.  Twice he left hospital without treatment because veins couldn’t be found.  On a visit to a private hospital a doctor produced this torch-like device and identified a hydrated vein with ease, allowing treatment to take place.

The money we raise is going to buy these devices for NHS hospitals, where they are not provided for.  They will not save or cure anyone, but they will make the treatment of acutely ill people less distressing and, on some occasions, possible.

You can help by bidding for this magnificent canvass, signed by Billy McNeill, one of only two made.  You can also help by buying a raffle ticket for the other one.  The ebay auction is available here.  You enter the raffle by donating at least £1 here.  Get involved, you’ll be pleased you did.

On the long drive home from Fife I heard Neymar had left the field writhing in agony after going down clutching his back, just as he did, while feigning, at Celtic Park last season.  Forgive me for being cynical.  Around 1am news came through of his broken vertebra, acquired from a dangerous foul.  Let’s hope he makes a full recovery.

    Long shot. Near impossible.

But when you stop dreaming those dreams, hoping those hopes, believing ……. Well, that’s the day you should give it up and choose a money laden EPL team to ‘support’.

What we did in 1967 was impossible and improbable. That’s why we are the famous Glasgow Celtic.

RONNY Deila had mixed feelings after Celtic shared the spoils with Rapid Vienna in the second game of the pre-season tour of Austria.

Substitute Teemu Pukki levelled the match for the Scottish champions late in the second half after Virgil van Dijk’s unfortunate own goal had handed the hosts an early advantage.

A sell-out crowd had crammed into the Gerhard-Hanappi Stadion for Rapid’s final fixture at the ground ahead of its demolition to make way for a new venue, creating a raucous atmosphere.

The Bhoys also had to contend with sweltering conditions as temperatures soared in the summer sunshine, with both teams taking water breaks during the contest.

And although Pukki’s strike maintained Celtic’s unbeaten record under the Norwegian, following their 3-1 victory over FK Krasnodar on Thursday, the Hoops boss told Celtic TV that he would be demanding more energy and attacking menace from his charges going forward.

“There wasn’t enough energy in the game, and we didn’t create enough and didn’t have the ball enough, so there is a little bit of disappointment,” he said in an exclusive interview.

“But it’s very early and we need to train well and get in good shape so that was the positive – we had a good game, with a good crowd and it was good training for the Champions League.

“There was good energy late on. We had 15 minutes in the first half and 15-20 minutes in the second half which were ok, but we need longer periods with more energy and attitude.

“It was 30 degrees outside and it was very hot so I understand it. We will have another game on Tuesday, so there will be an opportunity for the players who didn’t play so much today to play in the game and it will be a good match for us.”

Captain Scott Brown was forced to leave the fray in the opening minutes on a stretcher but the severity of his injury had yet to be ascertained.

“He got an injury and we think it was his hamstring, but we don’t know yet how severe the injury is,” added the manager.

“Hopefully it’s not big and he will be back quickly. He will have a scan tomorrow and we will see what happens.”

Try not to build the new management and team up to something they cannot deliver. Equally, do not tear them down if they come a cropper in this week’s friendlies.

These are just the dress rehearsas. They tell you only if it is a disaster or whether it has a little promise. It can still be good, average or stinking when it counts.

    And I’m off.
