20 days to Midtjylland, a Halloween movie awaits

207

Few things delight you and me as much as reading, discussing, or writing about Celtic signing targets.  Mario this, George, that, Piero or Ko the next thing make the summer nights seem even brighter.  Celtic, it seems, have great plans, but as one of my early bosses once told me, if you don’t achieve some early progress, you will not be around to see those great plans come to fruition.

We are 20 days away from facing Midtjylland in Champions League qualification.  New signings from outside the UK are likely to have to isolate for around half of that time.  I know what you’re thinking, Ange Postecoglou is unbelievably brilliant and can transform a sow’s ear into domestic and European success.

He may have to.  Even if a goalkeeper, right back and central half arrive this afternoon, they do not have sufficient time to blend into a cohesive defensive unit.  Try to imagine our much-needed corner kick defensive practice on Zoom.  Or we could always just continue with things from last season….

We have seen the summer honeymoon movie before.  It often ends with an unseasonably-early Halloween film in August.

There is a phrase in parliament ‘minister without portfolio’ and that’s exactly what Lawwell will pickup at CP. Remember to attain a position in UEFA you need to have a active position in a member club😱😵😯

    Excellent piece.

    Lawwell gone but never forgotten……

All he wanted was what was for best for Peter Lawwell. And his cronies. Like me.

    Goodbye. Don’t hurry back.

  4. Good luck Gas Meter! For all you did. Unbelievable that you have had to leave your country of birth in order to keep your family safe, and still they harp on! Most of them probably have never had to live under the pressure that you have, in their working environment, to the extent that you and your immediate family were nearly murdered by the hand of those who think you were a threat to them, surely not after all the bad things you did to ruin our club! Aye, it has been forever thus. As I said Good Luck and hope you can live out your retirement in safety and happiness, por cierto.

    Exactly

He also remains a big noise in this European Club Association and presumably needs a live club connection to maintain that position.

He will remain “available to offer Dom his vast experience for the good of the club”.

  6. I find some of the comments on Peter Lawwell sickening. A Manager who was sacked is hardly likely to display positive bias for an important figure in said manager`s dismissal but here is what Neil Lennon said:

`Lennon…… insisted the outgoing CEO should be “held in the highest regard” for what he achieved at the club. The Irishman is better placed than most to pass judgement on the qualities of Lawwell.

“The job he has done for Celtic is phenomenal. It deeply saddened me the level of criticism Peter suffered last season.

He didn’t deserve that. All he’s ever wanted is the best for Celtic.

Peter felt the same sense of acute disappointment as any other supporter over how the season unfolded. It hurt him, believe me.

But he should be regarded as a massively influential figure for Celtic in the modern era.`

I think those offering different opinions would do well to consider this part from the above:

“The Irishman is better placed than most to pass judgement on the qualities of Lawwell.”

  7. onenightinlisbon on

Lennon owes Lawwell for giving him a job he simply was not up to. hardly surprising that he gushes with praise for him is it?

Hot Smoked , Did NL not resign, !!! 😉”

You are quite correct. I had forgotten that ( or maybe a Freudian slip on my part !).

My general point remains. Neil Lennon was/is ` better placed than most to pass judgement on the qualities of Lawwell.”

    I’m confused.

Celts Are Here website have run a story this morning (under a misleading click bait headline of course) ….

… claiming Peter Lawwell’s total remuneration from Celtic for his executive role was £16m?

    I’m confused.

He held an executive position for just over 17¾ years?

Which works out at £900k p.a?

But we had commenters on here copiously over the last 18 months reporting as fact that he earned £3m+ per annum.

    I’m confused.

Bash the guy all you like.

Maybe you’re entitled to do so.

    Maybe he deserves it.

But, respectfully, have the courtesy (to other Celtic fans as much as to PL) to do so based on the facts.

  12. Rolling_Stone on

@ BACK TO BASICS – GLASS HALF FULL on 1ST JULY 2021 10:26 AM

In latter years his total renumeration package touched on £3m.

Part of the argument against PL from certain poster is the massive inflation of his wages over his tenure, far outstripping the increase in turnover. His predecessor had a wage of circa £250k.

    I agree.

We live in a country which is very negative re Celtic. This negativity is promoted either insidiously or blatantly and many Celtic fans fall for it. These fans might argue that the don`t read/listen to the MSSM so make their own minds up. I would argue that , even in these isolated times, that is almost impossible.

For example, an hour or so ago, I had no intention of typing this post but some other posts stirred me into action. In other words, I was influenced by what I had read. I believe everyone is in the same boat in this matter but some can look at the various waves while others stare at the deck.

Someone can be qualified but still conflicted or bias (implied or otherwise), when it comes to a particular topic or matter.

I believe Neil resigned from his position and was not fired, but may be wrong. More fundamentally, he owes a huge amount of gratitude to PL, so unsurprising he is not going to criticise him.

Also, please none of this ‘qualified’ to pass comment nonsense. Do you need to have been in politics to criticise Bojo and his cabal?

  19. !!Bada Bing!! on

Will be interested to read comments on PLs legacy, after Dom empties every department of the Club. Which is what I think he was alluding to during the Celtic media presser.

  20. !!Bada Bing!! on

Today I formally take up my role as Chief Executive of Celtic Football Club and I want to thank you for the very warm welcome I have received so far.

I want once again to thank Peter Lawwell for all he has done for the Club over such a long period of service and for the great support he has given myself in recent weeks.

I also want to take this opportunity to personally thank you for renewing your Season Ticket for 2021/22. The response has been incredible and provides an excellent foundation upon which Ange and I can build.

We have recorded a fantastic level of interest in our Season Ticket renewals and yet again we have the highest number of Season Ticket holders in the country backing the team for the season ahead – a phenomenal figure which is quickly approaching sell-out.

Last Friday saw the most Season Tickets ever sold by the Club in one day, in our entire history!

We are all very much looking forward to welcoming our Season Ticket holders back to Celtic Park very soon, and I’m encouraged by the recent Government guidance that indicates a possible return of fans to football in the coming few weeks. We will of course keep you updated as we get information from the Government and relevant authorities.

The positive impact of having our supporters back at Celtic Park cannot be underestimated as we look to a new era, with our focus firmly set on a return to winning ways.

We are about to embark on a new campaign both domestically and in Europe, and I’m really excited about the opportunities that lie ahead as we look to deliver the success that your incredible support so greatly deserves.

I truly believe that in the appointment of Ange Postecoglou as manager, we can all look forward to entertaining, and more importantly winning football in the seasons ahead and I look forward to sharing these moments with you at Celtic Park.

Once again thank you, for your warm welcome, for your unwavering support and for your continued commitment to Celtic Football Club.

Interesting email from Celtic thanking for renewing my ST, firstly we have highest number of ST’s in the country, secondly Friday had the biggest renewals in any one day.

I think you are conflating media criticism and bias against us (which is endemic) with independent thought of Celtic supporters.

There is an abundance of thought provoking discourse on Celtic cyberspace regarding all aspects Celtic, including the running of the club and PL’s role in it; this discourse is not informed by what the Daily Record etc print. You just have to look at the recent fan media engagement with the club to see how much (thankfully) fan media has developed in recent years.

You seem to be adopting the approach of Old Rangers/Sevco supporters by attacking criticism of the club and how it is run.

I think as Celtic fans we can be proud of the independent thought that runs through the support. If Old Rangers fan had such qualities, maybe they would have saved their club.

No.But I believe that someone in politics would be in a better position to give substance to that criticism.

(Ulterior motives would mean that they may not use that position honestly but that is another matter.).

  26. TURKEYBHOY@10,55

I fully agree with your last sentence “MANY THANKS PL FOR THE YEARS OF SUCCESS.ONWARDS AND UPWARDS CELTIC.” I think it would be churlish to think otherwise. When I found myself in his slightly distanced company when he started eating out with his family occasionally in my local (gastro – yuk!) pub in Eaglesham, the barmaid, who is of the blue-hued persuasion, nodded towards me saying there’s another of you guys over there. I then thanked him for all he’d done and the success he had overseen.

However I think it is also permissable to be underwhelmed in the extreme with the running of the club in the last year or so, much of which has to be laid at the bold Peter’s door. When you consider the role of the CEO in the overall running of the club/company it defies logic (to me at least) that so little was done when it was obvious the season was unravelling and there was still time to do something.

But the real issue, for me, was that so little was done for so long to prepare us for this monumentous season when the prizes available at the end of season 21/22 are ground shaking in their importance. And THAT, I’m afraid. lies squarely at Peter’s door!
