40 years since an iconic striker youth graduate

541

Notwithstanding we had four strikers isolating and that under most circumstances, four strikers would be sufficient, the games against Hibs and Livingston highlighted a long-term problem.  Celtic have been able to produce wingers, defenders and midfielders who have become first choice starters in the first team, but we are unable to produce a striker.

In the last 20 years, Craig Beattie is arguably our most successful striker-graduate from the youth system (gulp), and he moved on having scored 13 goals for the club, the kind of return Leigh Griffiths may have hoped for in a month, a few years back.

Gerry Creaney made his debut 31 years ago and spent a couple of seasons as a regular starter, before eventually playing Premier League football for Manchester City (it was a different world back then, kids), but Gerry was nowhere near a top performer at the club.

It is now over 40 years since the last iconic striker, Charlie Nicholas, came through the youth system to electrify Celtic Park for three seasons.  He returned for a five-year spell later, when he largely stood on the same spot every 90 minutes, before working out some deep therapeutic issues as a media pundit in later years.

40 years and we were unable to produce a striker with the talent of Leigh Griffiths, despite many changes in coaches, systems and first team budgets?  This sounds unlikely.  I suspect the opportunities afforded to the young Leigh at Livingston were denied to hundreds of Celtic youth strikers.

Bo’ness Railway Museum well worth a visit!

Loads to see and they have a platform and a cafe.

The auld trains are brilliant too!

  2. Ban the media, time is good right now to start fighting back, Neil should have went on a rant about other issues other than the trip.

I wish he’d stuck it to the mibs.

What harm would it have done?

Could/would the mibs be any worse?

Lenny mentioned in his interview that there were no positives from the lateral flow tests taken today.

I’m surprised(!) the club are using LFTs. They are hopelessly unreliable.

Surprised as I am, I’m not as surprised as Lenny was to find out, half way through his presser, that another of his players had tested positive.

That wee episode gives you an insight into how dysfunctional the club is atm, the manager sent out to face the press without being provided with the relevant information.

However else you look at it, our opponents are absolutely pishing themselves at our ineptness. We could rather do without providing them with further reason to reach for the Tena.

  5. I believe no fight has ever been won with the use of “air quotes”….

Nobody outside of this bubble is remotely interested in the content of his speech. The anger, the ridiculous bracketing of privilege (when everyone in society believes that’s exactly what footballers are) and the justification (as that’s how it is seen) of positive COVID19 cases at a time of critical need for the NHS are the takeaways.

And I’m talking of the media (and general public) south of the border who have no axe to grind. It’s now newsworthy nationally.

Couldn’t agree more about those two. Ban them immediately. I would also ban any of the ebters they give free rein to. Those are just for starters….Plenty more where they come from.

  10. The treatment of Neil Lennon by a huge number of the Celtic support has been sickening and disgraceful since he returned as manager. Utterly vile and shocking. Even today they line up to stick the boot into a legend of our club. Today Neil let rip under the pressure of the job which nobody can begin to understand. We may not agree with everything he says or does but today he let rip at people who hate and seek to undermine us at every turn. He deserves our support. Any ire should be directed toward the boardroom.

The UK gov tried that last year about footballers and privilege, and are trying again this year (as well as tossin in a new Statues act !!!!!!). The state of the NHS is the UK and Scottish govs fault. Celtic will not use up any NHS resources whatsoever. Lennon just stated facts. If the general population want to moan about a very well tested Celtic team flying to a place they would fly to themselves in a heartbeat (not my cup of tea) instead of taking our govs to task then they’ve got the govs they deserve.

I saw a 40 second clip of Lenny’s outburst, how did it flare up, were the media at their usual windup tricks beforehand?

  13. Go tell the Spartim on

McIntyre is a bigot as for English is the term a west Brit accurate, the BBC is one of the pillars of anti Irish Catholicism in Scotland.

I have no axe to grind with the press conference only to say, we should’ve taken them to task when we were on top (We get appalling press all the time anyway) and as some have suggested we should’ve went further and called out the whole SMSM, SFA and the MIB’s

Fair play Neil …agree with you all the way.About time that certain individuals were knocked off their lofty perch.Once again, congratulations to you for stating the obvious about those who cannot stand us,over to you Mr Desmond, fancy getting revenge…..then start the plot.

Well played NL and not a ball in sight.

  15. I have seen 3 different clips.

I agree with the majority of what he said. But most of this should have been said by the CEO and weeks ago .

  16. Let’s stick by Neil for another couple of seasons because he said publicly what we have been saying years. That Celtic haters well eh hate Celtic how long have we known that. JEEZO

Ffs we did not need him to embarrass himself and our club any further, Dubai should never have happened end of and no amount of deflecting can change that.

Call out the cheats in black on the park Neil, call out the sfa, call out res12, call out the complete disregard for our players H & S, call out the same club myth do not try and justify that pish.

  17. I’m certainly not a fan of Lennon the manager, but some of his points today had validity. Where, for example, were all the inquisitorial journos after Scott Arfield’s party.

As to Sturgeon/SG she/they need to ensure that their Covid related football interventions are consistent and fair. Several examples to date of that not being the case. Whilst we know that any form of public dissention is frowned upon within the SNP , it seems that journos are also increasingly guilty of failing to ask pertinent questions.

Plenty asking questions over the past week of NS about Dubai but I must have missed their direct questions to her about, eg, the Arfield party. Rather both she and the press took the opportunity to do a bit of gushing and patting Sevco on the back.

As I say, a wee bit of consistency.

  18. Have to really laugh at some supposed football brains on here. The biggest problem we have had this season, has been our defence cannot clear any type of cross into our box.Every team gets free headers.Mention a guy who excels at this for his present club, and on they come.”We have really dropped our expectations, when all we are looking for,is someone to head the ball away”.

That is a fekin doozy. One of the stupidest comments I have read on here.

    Funny though,still has me smiling.

I would like to see Bankier step up to the plate, if he thinks Lenny has valid points that need to be addressed he should publicly back him. Dont hang him out to dry and go into hiding.

  20. Well said Lenny.Calling out the scumbags, the snides, the hypocrites, was the right thing to do.Talking about “Hypocrites”,we don’t half have some on here.Lenny saying

t exactly what the vast majority on here have been saying about these scum for years, then when he does, because they want a new manager, they turn on him.Have a fekin look at yourselves.
