A lot of work in margins needed before Malmo

663

Malmo’s season started well. They were undefeated in their first eight games, recording wins against current league leaders, Gothenburg, and recent champions, Helsingborg, as well as a 2-2 draw at Elfsborg, but form soon slumped.

They’ve only recorded back to back wins in the league once since. Wednesday’s 3-0 over Salzburg is by some measure their best result of the season. Right now, there will be a lot of football fans in Austria wondering how on earth Salzburg are out of the Champions League. There’s a fair chance there’s just as many fans in Sweden wondering how Malmo remain in the competition, but there are clues.

Salzburg lost narrowly to Rapid Vienna days before the capitulation in Sweden, the second reversal in two league games this season. They beat a team from a regional league in the cup (0-7) but that and the 2-0 win over Malmo is the only positives in an early season full of panic.

Preseason friendlies are not to be regarded as an indication of anything, but home win over a weak-looking Southampton was the only friendly in which they avoided defeat in four attempts. At most this indicates their fitness was behind the curve.

The most telling inferences from all of these stats is that the margins between success and failure for Malmo, Salzburg, and Celtic, are tight. We could and should have beaten Maribor a year ago. Dedryck Boyata’s late goal against Qarabag transpired to be all that separated us from them. We are looking fit, and organised, but you and I both know we’ve yet to spark up front. We have a lot of work to do in the margins before the end of the month.

    Chairbhoy

Agree with all of that, again well said.

Celtic were correct to say nothing, it’s what we record or don’t say in future

that matters, when off the record Celtic concur that LNS for eexample was a sham, and it’s why Resolution 12 and especially the Five way agreement, are paramount, in letting Celtic fans into the know.

John Reid’s finest moment and his ‘we will not be treated differently’ speech was a watershed moment, but unfortunately it didn’t go on to completely ‘cleanse’ the SFA.

There is a new daisy chain of Dougie Dougie’s and Hugh Dallas’s waiting for the return of the ‘old firm’ and phoney balloney ‘refereeing ‘ really hasn’t gone away, even in the years we won, we won despite cheating not dissimilar to the present four in a row, where honest mistakes don’t matter because we are so superior to our nearest rivals.

Anti Celtic bias however has a new strain, virulent since 2012 and manifests itself in every facet of the game, and it’s coverage in Scotland. I give you the ‘seen unfenian hand’ in the ICT game as a mere example, not just that it happened, but how our dismay, was treated with utter contempt and no finality, by the SFA and the maelstrom of bias that followed via SMSM.

    =========

I’ve read the relevant posts on previous blog and realise folk can only respond on the basis of what they know or what they believe without actually knowing.

Based on what I think I know and unless something emerges to change what I think to be true, which is based on documented evidence that caused Res12 to be adjourned whilst attempts at clarification were made, then the greatest danger to Celtic will come if they continue with their policy of silence, which has served us well so far, if the SFA fail to engage meaningfully with the questions that prompted Res12.

If what we believe to be so is so, then not calling out the SFA on their failures to act on what they mistakenly thonk is good for our game as a whole and demanding change would be unforgiveable. It would make Scottish football, never mind just Celtic unsupportable as a meaningful sport relying on sporting merit.

    Cork Celt

You are correct that the response of the support should not be to walk away but neither should it be to accept the thinking that led RFC into oblivion then tried to mitigate or avoid the sporting consequences and I think you would agree with me.

  7. Kodi alert.

I’ve uploaded and installed but not had much chance of testing on live games.

Until today. Blown away by quality AND choice.

Bye bye Sky. Bye bye BT.

As long as I subscribe to Celtic TV and pay my dues to watch my club play, I’ve satisfied my conscience on not feeding an over bloated monster that was happy to undermine our game.

  8. You will find that the majority the stay away, boycott are also the separationists, independence 45 parrots, SNP cultists and Sheridan-the- perjurer brown-nosers.

They want their perverse political views to succeed at ALL and ANY cost to the economy of Scotland with the disastrous effect on the jobs of those not working in ‘cooncils’, hairdressers, nail bars and other parochial organisations and/or businesses.

Equally they would damage Celtic in their proposed nose-cutting, face-spiting tripe, all driven by the occupants of Ibrox.

They are all obviously still metaphorically ‘in their prams’ and love ‘throwing the toys out’ – luckily however the overwhelming majority of the Celtic support are grown-ups, by that I mean over seven years of age, and will have no truck with these idiots, who can ‘stick their heads in the sand’ and navel-gaze, all at the same time.

I thought it totally missed the point which was an accountable culture in football would help journos not hinder them.

    Celtic boring to watch ?

This might sound a bit mad but most football games are boring to watch, whether it’s the CL, La Liga, Spl or the Premiership, somebody some day will realise that football is actually boring, for me, a lapsed fan due to a mix of my daughter not allowing me to go and the other fact I sometimes forget to come straight home at the final whistle but I have always watched Celtic because it’s Celtic, Man U v Spurs the day, I went into the kitchen to do the dishes, unprompted by the boss, I watch Celtic because it’s Celtic, if they entertain that is a bonus…..

  26. Gerryfaethebrig

Today I actually did fall asleep during the Man U v Spurs snore fest, if it isn’t Celtic it is not a 90 minutes in front of screen for me. The only exception is when we get to knockout stages of CL or El Clasico. Even then the CL games if they involve the English ” giants” can be a massive turn off.

Tomorrow is a definite sit down and enjoy the game occasion .
