Aberdeen fans, grasping financial fundamentals

627

It would be remiss of me not to acknowledge Aberdeen fans’ banner on Saturday in response to their chairman, Stewart Milne’s suggestion that fans are damaging our game with talking about the consequences of clubs being found to be cheating.
capture-20151221-130408

I know some people learned the lessons of 2012 but others appear to have acquired amnesia. Back in 2012 only one SPL club was of the view that Rangers should not be allowed to phoenix and gain entry to top flight football. After a considerable campaign by fans, all others, apart from Rangers themselves, and Kilmarnock, decided it would be better if existing rules were allowed to stand on the matter.

Milne was off his head making his comments. The only way to possibly pull a stroke like this would be to keep quiet about it, even then I doubt it would be achievable. Making his feelings known was only going to engage Aberdeen supporters, who will have the ultimate view on what the club do.

The issue remains in the long grass until the Supreme Court have concluded their business, but what we said in October remains valid: if Celtic stand alone, the matter will not be looked at again, if other clubs are on-board, it will be examined appropriately. It is for fans of Aberdeen, United, Hibs, Hearts, Motherwell and make their feelings known.

The Herald’s piece this morning on Newco being “handed a place in the Premiership next summer as a result of some hastily-arranged league reconstruction” was remarkable. It was absurd but also worthy of respect. “NOBODY at Rangers (sic.)” wants this, but as other clubs need for Newco’s promotion is so great, apparently this is not really implausible.

Promote them, not because they are in need, because other clubs need them.

The starting position on league reconstruction is notable. For years only Celtic and Rangers blocked the SPL from being expanded. The majority of top flight clubs live in fear of (and experienced) relegation. They want a less competitive middle to the league. When the SPFL was formed a temporary moratorium of league reconstruction was agreed. This moratorium is due to expire shortly, a window for change is about to open up.

Tracking underneath all of these debates are the financial fundamentals. Newco is not financially viable. They are not viable in the Championship and although Premiership football would give them a few millions more, it would not change the fundamentals.

The circa £17m it takes to run a club at Ibrox before you employ football staff leaves little money for football given their anticipated top-flight income. It would take years and many tens of millions of dead investment to change this, as well as Mike Ashley raising the white flag.

These facts have not been grasped yet as the consequences of the hoped for investment of tens of millions not appearing are not being considered. Dave King might invest £30m-£50m, so with a fair wind everything might be OK. On the other hand, I think even £50m is tight, and I don’t see anything like that money heading to Ibrox.

The consequences of what happened in 2012, even on these pages, have yet to be realised. The old business model is finished, it’s not coming back.

Many thanks to everyone who contributed to the Foundation Christmas Appeal bucket collection on Saturday. You see people at their very best on these occasions. If you want to know how your money will be spent have a read here.

Very last shout from CQN Bookstore for Christmas delivery, if you’re after 16:00, it’ll be after the festives’ before you get your book or DVD.

I am always positive when it comes to Celtic far too many important things in life to worry about more than football, Celtic is like a family heirloom passed down from generations, real sadness is family stuff, I love Celtic, even more when we were rubbish in the 80s early 90s, in fact maybe my favourite times following Celtic when winning wasn’t the norm…….

As soon as the wee blade gives me the green light I will be back, she isn’t the brightest as she actually likes Lennybhoy !

  2. FAN-A-TIC

You said the other day that 4231 was played out, and it was easy to set up a team to get around it.

There are but a handful of teams that don’t play a version of 4231, and very very few play what most on here want, 442.

The system is not important, people get hung up on it, it’s how the players react to a given situation, same for the zonal marking, the present crop couldn’t do it so they sort of resorted to manzal marking, another thing RD was slagged for and no praise when he changed.

Most of the games we have lost have been from individual mistakes, take the Inter game, had CG not had his worst game in a Celtic shirt, I reckon we would have beat them.

Also very few take into account that we have to play to a different set of rules when we are in scotland, the game on sat was a perfect example, they could and fouled us with total impunity, it’s no wonder players of lesser ability’s heads go down.

And you can say what you want about Pep at Bayern, what he did at Barca is second to none imo.

The other Sunday Bishop Toal was saying 10am mass in Coatbridge, he was on “tour” I had you and your dad in my thoughts for one simple reason, it’s coming up to Christmas and obviously things are still raw, by the way I question my faith daily but I think believing does no harm, never met met you but I hope and pray things are getting better, by the way to keep them is just selfish, I read your response after I had posted, I actually said to the wife maybe I shouldn’t have mentioned you personally but your post back put my mind at rest, hope you and all the family have as good as time as possible and my final words are always remember the good times they will get you through the not so good times

  5. Arsene Wenger has been dismissed for the past decade as a football idealist whose teams pass the ball to death with no end product and no Plan B. He is derided for refusing to spend as big as his rivals who have been winning the titles with Sugar Daddy money bigger than he has. He has had to reduce his budget in order to develop The Emirates and his own fans have been begging him to go.

I have no fondness for Arsenal or Wenger. Despite not being as outrageous in spending as other clubs, he has still bought Ozil and Walcott for large sums and they pay good wages. Nevertheless, he has seen good players leave Arsenal tempted away by bigger bucks. I would love it if the team that has not seen the excess of Man City, Chelsea or even Liverpool and Man U, were to get a league title after a 12 year gap.

Hope City have not scored again since I started writing.

  8. Here’s a wee question for you all.

Can you feel the tension rising? Can you feel increasing desperation from those who, would defend the board no,matter what they did or indeed did not do?

It’s there isn’t it? Because we are now nearing the end game,of a strategy of deception which began several, years ago. The board knew it was the biggest gamble in Celtics history. But they loved in old firm (as they have told you) and the money it made. They didn’t think their strategy through tough and now it is in serious danger of unraveling.

Some of the contentions made by our host and Auldheid are beginning to give the end game away and then lead me to start questioning motives.

    Let’s take Paul’s leader.

Now it isn’t new what he said today. It was a repeat of a previous leader. And it won’t be the last time you hear it either. Because it will become a mantra over the coming weeks and months.

    Let’s examine the new mantra.

    Paul said:

The issue remains in the long grass until the Supreme Court have concluded their business, but what we said in October remains valid: if Celtic stand alone, the matter will not be looked at again, if other clubs are on-board, it will be examined appropriately. It is for fans of Aberdeen, United, Hibs, Hearts, Motherwell and make their feelings known.

So it will be someone else’s fault that nothing gets done. Celtic, the most powerful club in Scotland, the club which could bring the whole farce crashing down, the club with its support the ongoing victim of racism inmscotland, mthe club with the CEO on sfa boards etc are utterly powerless are they.

This claim simply doesn’t stand up,to scrutiny. It is a cowards charter. It is also, I’m sorry to say untrue. Celtic as I say have it completely in their power the bring this to a head and the ensure that authorities outside of this institutionally racist country are alerted to the goings on.

That they will not act and wish to hide behind not just other clubs but the supporters of other clubs isn’t just pathetic it’s morally bereft. Where is the leadership?

    But enough pretending already.

We know why they won’t lead or won’t act.mthey want the return,of racism and the bigot pound. They participated in the 5 way agreement to help, have refused to say anything, refused to take forward res 12 etc.

Up to their necks in this.

Now we know Paul is softening us up for this mantra. Do you really buy it?

And then onto Auldheid. Today he is now telling is that Celtic were and I guess are, simply trying to defend themselves by ensuring other clubs survive. Of course if I had made such a claim I would be bombarded by posters asking for evidence etc. Now if this is what Celtic were doing by renegotiating a tv deal to help, other clubs why on earth not say that then? I mean that would have been understandable yes? So why the silence? And why the 5 way agreement participation?

Or Auldheid is what you are really saying is that Celtic wanted to temporarily save the other clubs to wait till the Hun come back? And if so then is that what you want too.ma return to racism and old firm? You refused to answer me when I masked what you Would do if Celtic say nothing?

So I am beginning to wonder at motives now. And what of res 12? A nice distraction? A slight of hand? Or real?

But in any case, for many, Celtic will die if this board refuse to deal with the corruption.,the stakes are impossibly high.

  9. Weefra: Cheers. I’ll hold you to that!

GFTB: I’m scunnered by the last two seasons, especially in Europe. However these have been difficult times, not helped by some really poor acquisitions and game tactics. Celtic has always been a huge part of my life and hopefully will be until my last breath.

  10. Almore

Europe has annoyed me more than anything this season, 2-0 Fener at home, leading in Amsterdam twice, being in control at home, having about 6 chances in Norway before then even got in our half……. Is Ronny at fault ? The players, in my opinion have been better than the players they have played against, we had Leigh and Fener had RVP, different world but maybe we now think we should be competing in Europe. I don’t think we are good enough, far too many players earning mega money and not justifying their wages…..are guys fae Molde earning what James F is trousering. I know what’s pretty basic but we are where we are

  11. GERRY/ALMORE

Thanks ghuys. Good chance of dry weather tomorrow, so early bed. So much to do and so little dry days to do it. lol. Sleep well Timland, until tomorrow. HH

  12. I have been reluctant to post my thoughts on where I see our Team at present, mainly because I never want to see any Celtic Manager fail. However, I am so n my kness at the moment and I know am not alone.

I just cannot see where Ronny is taking us. Yes, I accept that any Manager needs time. However, I simply cannot see any progress, most notably in Europe. In Europe we have gone back the way, we were out thought and out played in last season and this season’s qualifiers by arguably so called weaker Teams.

If I could see the fast attractive football (copyright Ronny Delia) then I could understand where we are going but I simply do not see any of this. We are so pedestrian, too many square passes. If the Players aren’t good enough ship them out. If it is Ronny that can’t get them to play his way, ship them out. If it is Ronny’s system that is not conducive to Scottish Football then ship him out.

My fear is he will be given my new to spend in January, still not get it right and we will fail again to qualify or at least make a serious attempt to qualify for UCL in 2016/2017. We should be preparing at least a year in advance for UCL qualification, P67 has written as much. We are no better placed to make an assault on UCL qualification next season than we were when Ronny took charge.

I have said it before we have lived on 67 and 9-in-a-row for too long. We need to get back to those days, not that I am saying we will win the big cup anytime soon but we need a Manager and a Team that play with passion, fire in their belly.

We also need to stop preoccupying ourselves with the tribute act. 2012 was when they died. Whilst I am personally not happy as their is a team playing out of their Grave, playing in the same colours they are dead, lets concentrate on us. We need to make sure we are ready for the carcass to come back as the Brotherhood will make sure they do and when they do the honest mistakes will return.

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

You could apply the same comment you make about the players not justifying their wages to the club’s management. Do the Maribor, Malmo and molde coaches earn the same as Ronny? Do their CEOs earn the same as Peter Lawwell?

Are our various European failures of the last 18 months down to the players alone? I don’t think so.

When we are going into European qualifiers and the first few rounds of group stage games we do not have a settled team due to incoming and outgoing transfers, guys coming in on loan etc.

There’s been the likes of Berget signed one day and thrown into a game in Warsaw the very next. Ciftci signed as our number one target even although he wouldn’t be match fit for the euro qualifiers with a lengthy domestic ban hanging over him. Loads of players coming in on or just before deadline day at the end of August when it’s too late.

    That is not good management.

  17. Meanwhile,in other news,

  18. The Exiled Tim

You have no argument from me that we play to a different set of rules.

I have often said on here that the ref s in our games apply different rules for both teams.

The problem is that in modern times with an abundance of technology that all systems eventually are nullified.

Ourinho and Van Gaal are both finding that historical success counts for nothing unless you adapt to the present environment.

    Our system is not potent.

The constant sideways and backward passing allows our opponents to set defensively usually forcing us into long shots and hopeful punts.

We need a defensive mid and some one who can threaten from middle with forward diagonal passing.

Peps Barcelona originally looked unbeatable but both Chelsea and Man utd knocked them out by playing their defense and mids closer in last third so denying them space to pass through.

He had no alternative to counter this.

As an aside Man city dominated Arsenal in the possession stakes today and lost.

  19. Neganon2,

Celtics silence and connivance is shocking yet not surprising. They don’t want to rock the boat and play the long game.

It’s a pity Fergus or someone of his ilk was not running the show. He didn’t miss the SFA or Farry, suggesting even a meter of the league and SFA in one office ( this part vamp to pass ) just like Canadian ice hockey.

When Celtics CEO links the clubs financial well being to their return the game is clear. Not a surprise just highlights why they are quietly praying for Sevco promotion or in the worst case sit in a dark room until a 16 team league is in place.

Celtic are Scottish football but they don’t have the guts to push for what is right in any shape or form.

  20. Oh Dearie me

    From the sfa

“The Scottish FA notes the sanctions imposed on Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini by the adjudicatory chamber of FIFA’s independent Ethics Committee.

Given that grounds of appeal remain open to both individuals, it would be inappropriate to comment any further than to say today’s decision only reinforces the need for a fundamental change in governance at a global level in order to rebuild the trust and integrity of football.”

  21. Shuggiebhiy67

Am rubbish at geography but Monklands is a bit different from Coatbridge but sometimes ignorance is bliss

  22. Lennybhoy – he’s finding out how difficult it can be to play that way when the opposition have 10 men behind the ball the second they lose possession.

  23. Simple and Serious question to the Ronny Lovers on CQN…What Happened to The High Pressing Game.Aint Been Seen Since When? What is it…around 18 months into his Tenure and its Gone..Vanished..So how long do YOU wait on One mans Word That He Can do it ..How Long..His System often exposes the Centre Backs..He had Virgil and Jason..Hes got Simonovic and Boyhatta….And God Help us in this Title Race if Griff gets injured…Thats Where We Are..Depening on LEIGH GRIFFITHS to Win us a Title…Wise Up…Griff gets injured..

We are not going to agree on this, are we :-)

When Lenny was the boss it was the same,it’s nigh on impossible to break down a team that is hell bent on stopping you, just ask Pep from the time we beat them.

This is where we run into probs in scotland, the referees give our oppo cart blanch do do what they want to us, and we have little answer to it.

It’s all about the tools the coach has, and I am of the belief that ours are not good enough to take us to the next level, at home we will prevail at the end of the day imo.

Get a spine of the team in place, and keep them come what may.

We are beholden to the suits who see the money as the be all and end all, the team comes a distant second, even the happy clappers can’t deny that, bring in a few old heads, bring in a few leaders, it will imo pay dividends and that is what we are striving for, well the suits are, and you never know, it might just work out for the better for all concerned, we will have a team that we want to watch, the crowds will increase the suits will make a few more bobs, it;s a win win, but will they do it, I have my doubts.

    HH

    Sleep well Timland.

  27. And And..When Deila Goes…Not If…When…Does Lawwell Go Too…..I think He Does…..Change From The TOP by DD….i Can See This Coming…Please God…or Inshallah…Whatever..

  28. weeminger:

Perhaps he is mate but we should be passing the ball quicker, moving quicker and with the supposed quality we have be killing the teams domestically at least putting them to the sword. Motherwell deserved to win on Saturday, they out thought us, out played us and didn’t play ten behind the ball the whole game. Never a Skippy fan but he was a wise old player on Saturday.
