Aberdeen fans, grasping financial fundamentals

627

It would be remiss of me not to acknowledge Aberdeen fans’ banner on Saturday in response to their chairman, Stewart Milne’s suggestion that fans are damaging our game with talking about the consequences of clubs being found to be cheating.
capture-20151221-130408

I know some people learned the lessons of 2012 but others appear to have acquired amnesia. Back in 2012 only one SPL club was of the view that Rangers should not be allowed to phoenix and gain entry to top flight football. After a considerable campaign by fans, all others, apart from Rangers themselves, and Kilmarnock, decided it would be better if existing rules were allowed to stand on the matter.

Milne was off his head making his comments. The only way to possibly pull a stroke like this would be to keep quiet about it, even then I doubt it would be achievable. Making his feelings known was only going to engage Aberdeen supporters, who will have the ultimate view on what the club do.

The issue remains in the long grass until the Supreme Court have concluded their business, but what we said in October remains valid: if Celtic stand alone, the matter will not be looked at again, if other clubs are on-board, it will be examined appropriately. It is for fans of Aberdeen, United, Hibs, Hearts, Motherwell and make their feelings known.

The Herald’s piece this morning on Newco being “handed a place in the Premiership next summer as a result of some hastily-arranged league reconstruction” was remarkable. It was absurd but also worthy of respect. “NOBODY at Rangers (sic.)” wants this, but as other clubs need for Newco’s promotion is so great, apparently this is not really implausible.

Promote them, not because they are in need, because other clubs need them.

The starting position on league reconstruction is notable. For years only Celtic and Rangers blocked the SPL from being expanded. The majority of top flight clubs live in fear of (and experienced) relegation. They want a less competitive middle to the league. When the SPFL was formed a temporary moratorium of league reconstruction was agreed. This moratorium is due to expire shortly, a window for change is about to open up.

Tracking underneath all of these debates are the financial fundamentals. Newco is not financially viable. They are not viable in the Championship and although Premiership football would give them a few millions more, it would not change the fundamentals.

The circa £17m it takes to run a club at Ibrox before you employ football staff leaves little money for football given their anticipated top-flight income. It would take years and many tens of millions of dead investment to change this, as well as Mike Ashley raising the white flag.

These facts have not been grasped yet as the consequences of the hoped for investment of tens of millions not appearing are not being considered. Dave King might invest £30m-£50m, so with a fair wind everything might be OK. On the other hand, I think even £50m is tight, and I don’t see anything like that money heading to Ibrox.

The consequences of what happened in 2012, even on these pages, have yet to be realised. The old business model is finished, it’s not coming back.

Many thanks to everyone who contributed to the Foundation Christmas Appeal bucket collection on Saturday. You see people at their very best on these occasions. If you want to know how your money will be spent have a read here.

Very last shout from CQN Bookstore for Christmas delivery, if you’re after 16:00, it’ll be after the festives’ before you get your book or DVD.

Seemingly am allowed out on Boxing Day hitting BTs boozer the PV or the old Commercial for a couple and on the way home the “office” could be visited, if you are out and about let me know…although probably end up in the Bammy for a wee folk song night, you are more than welcome !

  2. LennyBhoy,

As I said today, I think the discontent generally can be laid at the door of Mr Bankier.

We are rudderless. No direction, no leadership, in an era where the old rivalry died we heard nothing about how we progress, where we were to go next. Nothing.

No vision. That can only come from the top of the club.

His biggest message was “behave yourself”, direction, leadership and protection of the support have been lacking.

The football isn’t as good as it could be, but, I still think it will improve, with Ronny.

Blind faith, naivety, perhaps, but am honestly held opinion.

If I was going to play Biton anywhere in either Europe or at home it would certainly not be as one of the 2 in the fabled 4-2-3-1.

In Israel he was an attacking midfielder not a holding player. He lacks the strength to play there, nor does he read the game well enough to anticipate trouble the way Lenny or Lambert could!

Brown wholehearted as ever still chases the ball and lacks the discipline to be a real holding player.

A coach or a manager has to have the ability to turn a collection of individuals in to a team which is greater than the sum of its parts. Under Ronnie we still look as if the chosen 11 have just met in the dressing room for the first time!

Apologies for the rant earlier I think I need my hols!

Leadership comes from the very top.

    He is failing the club.

I never post looking for an arguement but your post saw right through me, CQN is a Celtic fans site IMO and I would be worried if we all agreed

  10. Croppybhoy

I think a lot of our problems stem from Bittons role in the team.

He is a weak tackler with poor positional sense and shows no inclination to make a forward pass.

He may be neat and tidy with decent control but offers nothing in a positive sense.

He sits in our engine room and thats why it’s stalled.

Also his lack of protection for the centre halfs causes them no end of bother.

  11. Just afore I go

Football agent John Viola has been declared bankrupt over an unpaid £225,000 tax bill, it has been reported.

According to the Daily Record newspaper, Viola had proposed to settle the debt but these were rejected by Hamilton Sheriff Court on Monday. The court then formally declared his bankruptcy.

The newspaper said Viola, 55, had paid funds into an investment scheme which was used to evade tax payments. Other figures involved in Scottish football are also said to be affected by the judgement.

Over a 30-year career, Viola’s clients have included Rangers’ Barry Ferguson and Charlie Miller.

Maybe the net is closing in, but I would have the doubts.

  12. Gerryfaethebrigg…Funny Thing Mate..I was thinking about Stokes Today…Think you find he does his best stuff Towards the end of the Season…I Think he does…But thats where we are mate..Will Deila Play him….I Really Really Doubt it….He Should Have had A Chance By Now..

Hope you are well no if that eijit Frantic is about tell him I was asking after him and his wife is a diamond putting up with him….

Stokesy is a rubbish forward he would rather pass than shoot. I actually think he is so much a Ronny player, would try his best all day long and not chase the glory, again what do I know…..

At BMCUWP day oot Frantic told me he grew up with you and some thought you were maybe not a Celtic fan, we are from all backgrounds and know even less about football but our live for the hoops is shown in different ways, by the way Frantic is one of the good guys or even just as daft as the rest of us

  16. CRC

It’s much appreciated, will drop email when my history gets reinstated, I hate Celtic getting beat at anything but in my opinion wee Shay and family are a lot more important than Celtic v Motherwell,

You and Mr Baldie keep up the good work

  17. Eddieinkirkmichael….ok..Lets say Griff is injured for the Rest of the Season Who scores the Goals..in Your Opinion…Coz if Griff gets Injured..ROONEY of aberdeen will Outscore any Celtic Striker between now and Seasons end…With the Possible exception if Stokes…But That aint Gonna Happen..

  20. Ronny Lovers better Pray too their Particular God That Griff dont get injured, coz unless we sign a Good Striker in January, Deilas Celtic Career Depends on Leigh Griffiths…Thats Where we Are…SIMPLES

  21. CultsBhoy can not relate to Celtic Board ambitions on or off the park on

Never let a good crisis go to waste..!

Ok we are not at crisis point in terms of domestic competition – we could win a treble – in fact Im going to be so bold as to say we should win them all given the financial advantage we enjoy over all open ts in these competitions.

We do have a crisis of confidence among our fans – partly driven by disappointing results but fuelled imo by the communication vacuum between fans and Celtic Board.

So I would sincerely love Lawwell and co to come out and show some leadership and outline a new strategy that gives the support clarity and a vision they can buy in to.

Now that ( for me) would involve a new manager but that is less important than the aspiration and ambition. We need something that first and foremost encourages all who invest in season tickets to use them. We should look to increase this and get back to sell outs. I believe if the product was better this is possible.

One thing is for sure sticking with same manager, same strategy and current means of communication is a non option.

We have a wee crisis – let’s make it work for us.

  22. CultsBhoy can not relate to Celtic Board ambitions on or off the park on

    BGX

I’ve been a big Griffiths fan since day 1 and I’ve long warned that if he is injured we are snookered.

Too guys will bring goals tomCeltic Griff and Commons and Deila deep down has taken longer than he should to be convinced of both. Deila dropped Griff in Europe as soon as we got the vastly inferior Ciftci

  23. TSOAL…i Will Die Happy…I Dont Understand That…Does That mean in Oppos As to You Wont..or Are you Tarot Card Reader…Anyways ..Hope i Do…But in Reality….Does Anyone…DEEP…

If you can convince me the football industry is not an interdependent one as I’ve described, I’ll re think.

However until then you (unlike myself) are making things up and ignoring para N from the EC White Paper on the Future of Professional Football in Europe 2007

    http://www.europarl.europa.eu/sides/getDoc.do?pubRef=-//EP//TEXT+REPORT+A6-2007-0036+0+DOC+XML+V0//EN

    N. whereas professional football does not function like a typical sector of the economy and whereas professional football clubs cannot operate under the same market conditions as other economic sectors, because of the interdependence between sports opponents and the competitive balance needed to preserve the uncertainty of results, and whereas its various actors, including supporters, players, clubs, leagues and associations, do not operate as normal consumers or enterprises.

Once you accept that as true much of your theories about Celtic’s motivation look a lot less certain and the rest of your hypothesis re my motivation becomes tripe although I do understand your need to try and disparage the idea I’ve presented.

  25. Auldheid I am perfectly aware that football is an atypical business. Funny then that Celtic do not generally treat it as such.

If I didn’t know better I would think that what you REALLY mean is that we need a strong Rangers.

Perhaps that’s been the agenda all along.

  26. Incidentally Auldheid I find it fascinating that my idea is, ahem, made up, whilst yours is apparently not made up.

    That mask slipping a little?

  27. Or Auldheid is what you are really saying is that Celtic wanted to temporarily save the other clubs to wait till the Hun come back? And if so then is that what you want too.ma return to racism and old firm? You refused to answer me when I masked what you Would do if Celtic say nothing?   – See more at: http://www.celticquicknews.co.uk/aberdeen-fans-grasping-financial-fundamentals/comment-page-8/#comments

    ========

I answered that question the day after you asked it so I’ll assume you never saw the answer.

I’ll repeat the answer I gave to same question on Twitter and it covers my motivations.

I could not out of self respect continue to pay to a set up that I know from a trail of evidence I have seen (unless someone proves otherwise) tells me our governance is corrupt.

Now because I don’t want to give up supporting I’m working my wee socks off with the other guys to tackle those responsible for it and the thinking that motivated and protects them. So my motives are selfish. I don’t want to give up on Celtic but if nothing is done I’d have to. I did not imagine it would take over two years for Res12 to get to where it has which is why I never gave up close season. I thought about it but fact TRFC were not going to be opponents helped me stick.

Not being alone in this respect I think it is a factor Celtic will take into account purely on business grounds this time, but I hope that like me they are raging at the lies they have been fed.

Barcabhoy who is in a position to know and unlikely to exaggerate says they are.

If that were me I wouldn’t be getting mad though, I’d be too busy getting even. Going over the top to be msm gunned sounds great if you want to be a dead hero. I’d rather be a live sneaky wee bass.

Three years ago I wrote a chapter for an Edinburgh University publication Bigotry Football and Scotland.

In it I described the last time as a 15 year old I attended a Rangers game and why.

    Nothing has changed since.

I never made that up but you made up the ludicrous suggestion I might want Rangers back.

    You really are getting desperate.
