Aberdeen liberated of expectations for 90 mins

224

The euphoria of moving a further three points ahead on Wednesday night now gives way to the serious business of facing Aberdeen at what is expected to be high winds on Sunday.  Celtic always do well at Pittodrie, but you should question your victories as much as your defeats.

Celtic have won seven consecutive games at Pittodrie since back-to-back defeats there in season 2016-16, scoring 20 and conceding four in the process.  It has become a regular party away trip.  This will boost the players’ confidence and should worry Aberdeen, but every game is different.  Aberdeen are third in the table; this is one of our most difficult games left in the league campaign.

Derek McInnes is under pressure for the first time as Aberdeen manager.  The 0-0 he got at Ibrox this month surprised his own fans as much as anyone.  That game was a liberating opportunity for Aberdeen, free of expectations for 90 minutes, they found common purpose.  We will need to work for any points we take back down the road on Sunday.

  1. Sunny with ~20 mph winds gusting to ~40mpg in the Granite City on Sunday during the game. Better conditions than against Clyde so we should be able to play in that.

Making our game on Sunday a must win to extinguish any hope they would have of a fightback

They’ve conceded more goals way from home than everybody except for Ross County this season but if they play like they did against us last season when we drew 0-0 they’d be a decent bet

When you see it printed out it all looks pretty normal. And yet what is being advertised is yet another game played at brunchtime on a Sunday. In Aberdeen. Then again I think Setanta used to have a Sunday 6.30pm slot .. Been to Pittodrie many times in the past, Saturday 3pm kick offs and a rare midweek match, but never ever 12.00pm on the Sabbath. Of course the Dons, Caley Thistle, and Ross County have made the reverse journey many many times. All in all more proof positive of the contempt broadcasters have for travelling fans. Ah you may ask what about the Quid pro Quo? Alas for us there is little or none. Time for Celtic FC to seriously examine the opportunity cost, of doing something else.

Unlikely that you are…. unless the media is much less effective than I believe it is.

Celtic fans are encouraged to be negative whilst the Huns, often to their cost, have their expextations built up.

FWIW, I think the Huns will win tomorrow but I don`t think they will go through against Braga.

Aberdeen’s form is no better than Hearts’, and marginally better than Motherwell’s.

    Before the split we play: Dons A, Kilie H, Livi A, St M H, Sevco A, St J H.

From that lot, and considering current form, our the toughest matches are Livi, St J and Kilie.

  13. BHOYJOEBELFAST, both us and the deid team were in need of a centre half, we due tae a Jock retiring and they as a result of big corky doing the same.

Ironically both initially only got a game as fill ins for the regular centre half’s being unavailable, us because of injury and them as their captain had been sine died.

So both clubs enquired about “dicke” valentine, since he was with the snottery upper class spiders they won, or so it seemed at the time.

The huns will stabilise and win all their league games until we play them in March imo.

Its tempting to look at their poor form since New Year and await the next meltdown but looking at the bigger picture and evidence across the season so far, teams tend to revert to type – Sevco have a goal difference of +44. Outwith Celtic(+62), the best goal difference in the league is +4 (Aberdeen and Livi), followed by Motherwell(+1).

The rest of the league have a negative goal difference!

They will be favourites for all their upcoming league games and Lenny will know that, even if publicly he states he is only concentrating on our own fixtures. He’ll keep our eyes on the ball.

  16. SIEMPRE – there is what should happen logically and what we’d love to see happen :) I hope they are in a tailspin that they can’t get out of. It has happened before. Players are fickle things, they might not be up for the fight – that’s what Gerrard has deduced anyway. Their fans say Kent, Aribo and Morelos are all playing poorly.

One more poor 90 minutes and they will implode.

For Gerard’s reputation to be enhanced, he needs to win the title and get good European results – the latter is what really got the attention of his friends down south. If Braga beat them over two legs, maybe even beat them in both legs, then there will be some serious doubts about him.

  18. There is a difference between being a good player and in being a player in good form.

Edouard and Griffiths are good players; Morelos and Cosgrove are/were/ players in good form.

Form is fleeting; class is permanent.

  19. glendalystonsils on

The situation with us and Sevco will be rather similar. If we drop points while they win in a corresponding fixture they will get a big boost even if they are still behind us . If the situation is reversed and we widen the gap , I believe we will play with even more freedom and confidence.

They are the ones under pressure and it’s very much reflected in their performances and results , whereas we seem to be playing with a very positive mindset .

  20. The Battered Bunnet on

If the problem at Sevco – as their manager has said repeatedly – is one of mentality, pressure and bottle – we can expect their form to improve when the pressure is reduced. In other words, if/when they mentally concede the league, they’ll start performing again.

It’s a big if, of course, and I note their manager’s comments today along the lines of “we need proper winners” and he’s “not giving anything up”. Good. The players now know that they’re not very good and that they need to keep playing with the pressure on.

Personally, I see a direct correlation between the behaviour of their PR and the performance of their team. The more crap Jum puts out there in the media, the more crap they are on the pitch. In that light, I’m pleased to see another instalment of the Morelos-racism story out today. The more they think about what’s happening in the papers, the less they’re thinking about the important business of winning football matches.

All that said, the working assumption at this end remains that they’ll win every match, and so must we. We need nine wins, one of which versus them, and that’s that. It’s all about Celtic. Starting on Sunday.

  21. Jim, Was wondering that myself, funny no one picks on Aribo. Morelos get’s stick not because of his colour but because he is a diving cheat and a sly nasty player, the fact he is an ugly grumpy bassa doesn’t help either.

  22. Although we are playing well at the moment , I hope we don’t take things for granted . We have a good cushion ,but things are not over not by a long shot , we still have some tough games .and of course v them which we must all turn up for ,we cant face them carrying passengers ,its a failing we have against them . we have a few in the squad at the sight of they blue jerseys sets the brown stuff flowing . All turn up we will be victorious. We will secure the 9 how bad do we want it .

  23. Intrigued by the quote from Peter Lawwell today, considering whether Sevco will have to enter Administration any time soon, he said :-

With reference to the level of punishment that should be inflicted on the Ibrox club in the event of administration, Lawwell said: “We have a strong view in terms of what happens. But we need to know the facts and wait and see what happens. It would be totally inappropriate to talk about it now.”
