  1. Brisbane 67

There has been an unofficial boycott for years. Thousands of empty seats week in and week out and our lowest sized travelling support for an age.

    Hasn’t changed a thing.

It could be argued that this drop and the income lost has got us to this position and that the stay aways are damaging the club.

It’s also an argument that the club are failing to attract these fans back.

If we want success we have to contribute to it as we are the biggest source of income. It’s a rock and a hard place for any protest.

Good to see you posting J.

That post was overly sensible for CQN at this time.

There, however, is one flaw in it.

I note you do not mention off shoring!

I think PL should off shore the playing side to an emerging market. As it stands stadium will soon be empty anyway.

Twist N Turns. Great post. Goes to the heart of the matter and argued from a position of personal credibility. Lawwell and Desmond’s ‘strategy’ for Celtic parallels the fallacy of austerity economics. Stripping out value as a matter of policy leads only to poverty. They need a lesson in Keynesianism. Use your investment power to generate value. Lawwell’s dismal austerity is about to catch up with him. If an economic minnow like Aberdeen begins to pull away from us he will be hunted.

  4. Marrakesh Express on

The last home game had a crowd of 30k. So probably around 10k who bought a season book couldn’t be bothered on a lovely sunny day. What will it be In freezing January v Hamilton? As someone suggested earlier, an unofficial boycott could well be happening.

To an extent the manager is carrying the can for the board’s parsimony and lack of ambition, but Ronny’s not helping himself either. He’s also the sacrificial lamb in waiting.

I hate to say it, but there is only one thing going on at Celtic FC at the moment – It’s called success.

Why do I hate to say it? You might just ask that question.

Well, my angst derives from the fact that my understanding of success and Dermot Desmond’s and Peter Lawwell’s are completely different.

Those chaps are quite happy. They control the flow of regular income in a largely noncompetitive marketplace which they are guaranteed to monopolise year after year.

Their idea of success is already being realised.

On the other hand, I am not content to see us be whipping boys of Europe.

I want and demand more from these custodians and stewards: they are nothing more than that.

I want more than just the chance of getting into Europe.

    For me that is failure.

We glimpsed a season of success when we lost the league and the UEFA CF.

    There’s irony for you lads.

  6. Boyata seems to be cursed by the perception versus reality problem.

There are a couple of Boyata doubters in my household so, together we counted every pass he made in the first half.

    14 passes, 11 accurate, 3 misplaced.

2 of the completed passes we all went “great ball”.

The 3 which did not find a Celtic player, none of which was he under pressure. None of which led to a goal being conceded.

Excellent post TnT !. I don’t understand how football clubs run and have struggled to get my head around where we are now. That post has sorted it out for me. I understand MON overspent, I understand we can’t compete against the English championship money, let alone the EPL but I don’t understand why we can’t aim for another Hooper or KC . I’m pro RD for now but I think the lack of quality in the squad could do for him.

    Great.

    A thoughtful piece.

I understand in principle what you are saying.

With respect, the difference is clear.

Plant and machinery have no say in the matter.

My understanding is that every effort was made to persuade V.V.D. for one to stay, but he was determined to leave. I believe the same may be true of several others of our high profile departures.

Who could blame V.V.D. for leaving after Malmo?

Why would any ambitious player , highly priced of course, want to come to Celtic? What are his prospects of achieving the Holy Grail….the E.P.L. ? or it`s continental equivalent.

The management of decline………Oops ..another inappropriate reference :-)………is what we are facing.

Unless the penny drops and the coach is jottered.

That ,for me,is the unavoidable step which must be taken

We have a squad littered with internationalists.

We are punching way below our potential.

    Why? That`s not P.L.`s fault.

    Surely.

    Nice talking to you.

  9. What’s all this talk of dwindling home crowds? Does that mean there are supporters who only support when we’re winning or at least playing exciting football?

Isn’t it when the team is not performing that they need more support, not less?

And if we now embark on a 10 game winning run in the league, will that bring the crowds in? Or do we have to win all the European and cup games too?

Honestly, the only thing which would make me choose NOT to go to a home game is if it’s against the newest team in the league. Now you may want to turn my own argument on me. The difference being my choice is not about win, lose or draw. It’s about integrity.

  10. CultsBhoy likes living wage hates heated driveways on

Yesterday Celtic had Leigh Griffiths trying his heartt out….Aberdeen had 11 players trying their hearts out…

  11. That. Good post.

Your analogy is close but I would differ on two points.

Celtic are not an ailing company IMO.

Also Forster, VVD and Wanyama were not as expensive as the players they were brought in to replace. Their value increased because they were given the platform to show their worth.

  12. PeterLatchfordsBelly on

Macjay. Except the choice of RD as manger is also a symptom of the strategy of non investment. Cheap options leads to underachievement against potential. Supports TnT’s argument. Who chose the cheap option? Lawwell and Desmond. Despite the fact we have England on our doorstep, we don’t have to be the passive victim of circumstance. We can and should take control of our own destiny. All the rest is just an excuse for failure. The support (apologies Peter, “the customer base”) won’t tolerate this dross much longer.

  13. Macjay

I didn’t say it was possible to keep the players, I said, they need to be replaced by quality when they go.

Soon, we will nothing of value to sell, then you are left with less income stream, which in turn leads to less to invest, which leads to a half empty stadium, which leads to less income, which leads to…….you get the picture

    Danny….hope all well.

    Peter L and I’vehadtochangename…..Ty.

  14. A fish rots from the head down.

    Celtic have an absentee owner.

I’m not quite sure why The Great Desmondo bought his shares. Maybe it was to keep up with his horse racing pals. Maybe he took a punt on us getting into the EPL. Whatever the reason he’s not interested. He’s delegated responsibility to Peter Lawwell, surely the most high profile football CEO in the game, and seems to have told him just to keep the Club ticking over.

The result is we’re going nowhere. It’s four flat wheels on a muddy road. No vision and no ambition.

That’s why supporters are losing interest and slowly drifting away.

  15. Supersutton

they may have been less expensive, but they were better or comparable quality, and CL football followed.

My point is you cannot continue to replace good quality with poorer, or you will suffer long term.

    Off for run…….

  16. Supersutton – interesting post on Boyata. Did you see the post about our changing defensive line ups and the wins and losses for each.

I noticed Izzy has never been in losing defense this season and yet he’s a target.

  17. Supersutton

Crowds have been falling since 2005. since Mowbray they have dropped off a cliff.

There is numerous reasons for that.

The club need to attract those fans back and not just ones like you and me that would turn up anyway.

  18. Failure?

Four titles in a row, odds on to make it five. Ten out of the fifteen titles in this millennium. Regular domestic cup wins. Group stages in Europe in nine of the last ten seasons, three times through to knockout stages.

If that’s the benchmark of failure then expectations are ridiculously high.

We have a recruitment strategy that’s main purpose is buy to sell rather than buy to build a team. When is the last time we’ve had the same first choice central defensive pairing for two seasons in a row? Caldwell & McManus? As long as we pursue the current strategy in the way we do, we will begin each season inconsistently whilst new players in key positions bed in. Mid September and we haven’t seen all of our defenders play let alone have any idea what our strongest back four is.

Will this strategy change? No. Reason why, see first paragraph. For those in charge it’s working a treat, success on the park and a nicely set of balanced books off it.

    We differ on the solution.

  20. Gary your comments are fair enough. The problem is that we hope to win the European Cup again. This is the standards we have set ourselves and why we feel the pain of not doing better in Europe.

    ==============================================================

    Exactly how I saw it.

    Who should be providing motivation?

  22. I’m a great believer in natural talent, and I’ve been saying to my mates Celtic have lots of it but the players don’t show it as individuals, I was thinking maybe just a wee bit over coached, if there is such a thing, as far as I saw yesterday Aberdeen individually man on man beat us yesterday but not as a team, it sounds daft I know and it’s difficult to put it in print, I’m just saying maybe the coaches should let the players let themselves think out of the box now and again, I’m not panicking it’s just a thought, but what I will also say is the officiating was bad yesterday, really bad, the sheep should had three off that park yesterday, and I’m not exaggerating either, and mark my words the closer the games are, the worse it will get, NEVER forget that semi against Cally, NEVER.

  23. A simple comparison on contrasting styles.

On Aberdeens goal just inside our half they sent a diagonal ball into our box.

We had a few free kicks in those same kind of areas and always played a short sideways or backwards pass.

Does not need a rocket scientist to see who had the better chance of scoring.

I am sick to death of modern coaches obsession with possession.

There are two kinds negative and positive .

Unless a coach understands this he should stick to a simpler strategy.

Of course we want to do better in Europe, well the fans do at least. But compare recent years in Europe to the dark days of the 80s and th 90s when one or two European games at CP in a season was the norm.

It can get better, it should get better but it’s not all gloom and doom like many on here are desperate to tell us.

  27. I can see similarities with the Jeremy corbyn situation….the grass roots wanted change, and they got it.

DD and PL need to be gone from Celtic Park….and before you all jump on me, I don’t exactly know how….but I do know this….there obviously is a protest against the PLC, and that’s by supporters refusing to go watch the team…..until something is done about the decline of Celtic as a football team, they wont return, and who can blame them.

The potential Celtic have is being squandered by what I can only describe as halfwits, and that me minding my words.

Its gone on too long…..Change now before it gets worse.

That’s a pity as it would be easy money

Get your cash on us on Thursday, the EL helped moulded our Lenny and I have a feeling Ronny will get us to the knockout stages AGAIN

  33. The problem with having people like DD and PL running Celtic…is that they like to hide when things are going badly.

But when things are good…there they are, basking in the warmth generated by the supporters, milking it for all its worth.

They aren’t supporters….DD is a Man Utd fan, Lawell is a businessman who thinks he knows about football.

Those who fear change, fear it for good reason.

Celtic is being run like the plaything of rich businessmen, who do not care obviously about the team on the park.

There should be a revolution in thinking…..Celtic need to be a football team first and foremost….businessmen who don’t understand the fundamental nature of Celtic, should be chased.

    Get them out.

    We need action.
