Abject failure of leadership

1038

After they hatched their plan to blackmail Scottish Football League clubs into voting Newco into the First Division, Stewart Regan, Neil Doncaster and David Longmuir might have paused to wonder what reaction they would receive.

You better believe they didn’t anticipate the reaction today from Clyde and Raith Rovers.  Rovers chairman, Turnbull Hutton, told BBC Scotland’s Jim Spence, “If we are at the stage of bending rules and accommodating, threatening and blackmailing, we want to give it up.”

“Bending rules… threatening… blackmailing…we want to give it up”.

Hutton went on to suggest heads should roll at the SFL, SFA and SPL.  He’s the first from within the football establishment to call for sackings but he’ll not be the last.

An extensive statement by Clyde FC concluded, “The papers include a proposal to allow a Newco to enter the 1st Division. This is contrary to the rules of the SFL and nothing within the papers justifies this proposal.”

Regan, Doncaster and Longmuir will now be contemplating that their bully-boy tactics will fail. SLF clubs will vote against their recommendations and SPL clubs will not stop promotion from the lower leagues based on merit.  It looks like abject failure of leadership.

What is abundantly clear is that the current leaders of our game are not capable of delivering such a governance structure.

I think it’s worse than that. I think they’re no even willing to.

  3. People associated with the toxic ex club should not be anywhere near Hampden and the governance of our club. They will all be flushed out in time and then, and only then, Scottish football can move on.

Peat, Smith , Ogilvie and others have presided over Scottish football when one team totally disregarded the rules re contracts, their bread and butter. They ignored it to try and keep them on top. Never mind the other 101 offences that have brought our game into disrepute and put other member clubs futures at risk. They are a disgrace every last one of them. Celebrating goals in the main stand at Ibrox as they slowly strangled Scottish football.

  4. Starting to get why Celtic might have been silent for all this time: they know that those that run our footballing authorities are beyond redemption and they are doing a good job on their own in signing their P45’s

Campbell Ogilvie is a corrupt and compromised eejit and should resign immediately….but he won’t because the masons run the show in Scotia, and the o.o. seems to be running the ‘soccertainment’ show.

And they do not care about anything except keeping the bigotdome spewing its violent bile in perpetuity.

WALTER BLASTS SFA OVER GERS CRISIS

    By Ron Scott sport@sundaypost.com

Walter Smith has spoken for the first time since the Rangers rescue package he fronted was rejected.

Smith is disgusted at the SFA’s approach to the entire situation.

The Ibrox legend is also devastated at not being allowed to save the club along with Jim McColl and Douglas Park.

    SEE PAGES 86 AND 87.

    MISSED OPPORTUNITY!

WALTER SMITH is still coming to terms with the bid he fronted to rescue Rangers being rejected, writes RON SCOTT.

Speaking for the first time since the move fell through 10 days ago, Smith is highly critical of the way things have been handled at Ibrox since the club first went into administration then liquidation.

He still insists the consortium backed by Jim McColl and Douglas Park represent the best thing for Rangers’ future.

“The reason I agreed to lend my name and reputation to their bid was because they were not looking for anything in return,” revealed Smith.

“That was the big difference from other people involved at the present moment -They were prepared to fund the club without looking for anything back.

“The plan was to help with the running of Rangers, but every penny coming in — including season tickets—would go directly to the club.

“Never at any time was money going to be taken out, and both Jim and Douglas deserve praise, even though it didn’t come to fruition.”

Although Smith was being touted as the hew chairman, he categorically states that was never the case.

“During that period, there were stories about me looking for a job. I wasn’t interested in anything,” he said.

“We were going to put in a management team. I wasn’t going to be the chairman.

“Equally, I wouldn’t have taken any money out, as I’ve already made a good living out of Rangers.”

The consortium wanted the deal concluded quickly, but now it’s now dead in the water.

A major part of the plan was to drastically reduce the wage bill, possibly by as much as two-thirds to £5m a year. McColl and Park thought if Smith spoke to senior players, they would not walk away as they’ve done under Charles Green.

“To say I’m bitterly disappointment doesn’t begin to express my feelings,” continued Smith.

“Our plan was to ensure the club settled down over the next couple of years as there was not going to be a massive influx of cash.

“They were going to be two really hard years. Then we were going to try and raise some money.

“We were perfectly clear in what we were doing and what we were going into.

“Now the club has been denied the benefit of having two of Scotland’s better businessmen in Jim and Douglas at the helm. That’s the most disappointing factor.

“Rangers needed them. That’s why I had no hesitation going in to back them and front their bid. They were the best bet to get Rangers back on track again.

“I was confident we’d bring back tradition and pride back to Ibrox.

“Sadly that is now it over.”

Smith fires a blast at ‘negligent’ SFA

FORMER BOSS SPEAKS OUT TO THE SUNDAY POST

    By Ron Scott

    sport@sundaypost.com

WALTER SMITH has blasted his former employers at the SFA over the way they’ve handled the Rangers crisis.

The former Scotland manager believes the situation is now so grave, the future of Scottish football as a whole is a cause for concern.

“There has been negligence on the part of the SFA in handling the overall situation in Scotland,” said the ex-Rangers manager last night.

“Now I think everyone is going to have a fear about the very future of Scottish football.”

Rangers will be officially removed from the SPL on Wednesday when the clubs meet at Hampden.

Depending on in which division of the SFL they end up, there might be no Old Firm games for at least four years.

“That’s a drastic circumstance for Scottish football,” says the man who led Rangers into battle 74 times against Celtic.

“Whether people like it or not, you have to say the Old Firm are a major part of Scottish football.

“I know there’s a lot of resentment from other clubs about that, but it’s a fact.”

The money generated by the Old Firm undoubtedly helps keep Scottish football afloat.

Already Sky TV have said they’ll honour their current deal for the incoming season, despite the fact they will be minus four Old Firm League games.

But it’s difficult to see them continuing beyond that without seeking a reduction in what they pay.

That’s only the tip of the iceberg, though.

Every SPL club relied on Rangers to help make ends meet, while every SFL club hoped to draw them or Celtic in the two Cup competitions.

“I don’t think Rangers want different treatment from anybody else,” Smith continued. “It’s just that the whole thing has been badly handled.

“10 years ago, Motherwell went in to administration. Four years ago Gretna went defunct.

“So surely the SFA should have put sanctions in place then?

    “That’s why I’m saying they’ve been negligent.

“Now we’ve got a free-for-all around Rangers, where everyone is having a kick at them.

“If there had been proper statutes in place, a lot of the stuff that’s coming out now would not have happened.

“After what occurred at Motherwell and Gretna, other clubs should have known exactly what would happen to them in similar circumstances.

“Any club that goes into liquidation and wishes to come out again as a newco should know exactly how they are going to be treated.

“Instead, everyone is posturing just now.

“But the bottom line is that if they carry out what they are supposed to be going to carry out in the next few weeks — and Rangers go into the Third Division or even the First Division and not be com-petitive — then it’s going to affect the whole of Scottish football in a drastic way.”

Only 13 players turned up for the start of pre-season training at Murray Park on Thursday.

Although Rangers successfully appealed an SFA embargo on them signing any player over 18 for a year, that sanction seems certain to be re-applied.

So Smith is right to point out that Rangers may not even be in a position to compete in the Third Division.

  16. In Walter’s blue heaven everyone is to blame except them. Of course they should be on top, who cares what you need to do to stay there. Another myth and monster created by the MSM.

My God having to threaten Chic Young with Archie Knox as you couldn’t take him on verbally sums it up well. You just weren’t allowed to criticise him.

  17. Just been reading an “article” by yon Dick Wilson in the Independent on Sunday, about thems. He can’t begin to even contemplate that the rest of Scottish football regard thems as beyond redemption. That view can only be held by rabid Celtic supporters, in his estimation. He totally cynically rejects the idea that any club chairman could value sporting integrity above the monies thems bring to the sport, conveniently forgetting how thems defrauded everybody else.

  18. Apart from the battered bunnet’s brilliant post yesterday, the whole evening and night was taken up on here with a slanging match. What’s that all about?

Meanwhile,Scottish football is getting thrown on the slagheap to suit some evil bigoted ideology.

I despair. Ready to throw in the towel.

There have been lots of events during this soap opera which have surprised, shocked or sickened me. And yet they still have the capacity to shock me further. The story today (don’t know who posted it, I read it a while back and have been simmering since) that the SFL is going to call in lawyers to go over the rules to work out what majority would be needed to get newco in …. it just staggers me. This AFTER they’ve seen the outrage, disgust and indignation of fans and club officials alike. They really do not care what any of us think – not the fans who support the game financially, not their member clubs.

  20. 67Heaven ... I am Neil Lennon..!!..Truth and Justice HAS prevailed on

So, walturd fears for Scottish Football …..well, your club won’t need to worry …… They are no longer IN Scottish Football …….. And neither will sevco be, in a few weeks…….and don’t blame the SFA for your demise……. They did their best to keep you going when you and your criminally greedy EBTers sucked the blood from your club…….. Not that I am criticising you for that….you all did Scottish Football a great favour…..

My only surprise is that the sevco fans can’t see that you were a major contributor to the demise ……you and David Murray………

  21. Gotta love this walter smith quote from the article above –

“Equally, I wouldn’t have taken any money out, as I’ve already made a good living out of Rangers.”

And he goes on to blames the SFA for the rangers mess.

  22. •-:¦:-•** -:¦:- sparkleghirl :¦:-.•**• -:¦:-•,

The reason they don’t know what vote would be required is that what they want to do is not covered in the SFL rules. They would need to rewrite big chunks of it to get Sevco straight into division one – and Clyde showed yesterday how popular that idea is.
