Act before talk of shaming the club

1133

“I said to the players at half time that we were shaming the club at the moment and they had to go out and show some pride in the shirt”, the words of Neil Lennon to the BBC after the game on Saturday.

Pride in the shirt is a requirement any manager should ask of his team, and it is notable that the subsequent goal-scorers both have strong connections to the club, but it probably had little to do with the second half performance from Anthony Stokes, Charlie Mulgrew and our the impressive James Forrest.  Calls to pride are limited in what they can achieve, genuine talent is far more effective.

At the AGM on Friday and again in his post-match comments on Saturday, Neil alluded to the fragility of his own position.  Had the game finished 3-0 to Kilmarnock I think he would have walked away.  This would have been a great pity.

Neil is learning on the job. He was not gifted the benefits of experience without actually having to work through difficult times as a manager.  Before his thoughts turn to his own position, before our season is too far gone to save, he should recruit an experienced assistant.  Someone who knows the challenges of working with a disparate group of players, who can deal with the challenges of a demanding board and supporter base.

The need for a mentor was evident 18 months ago and is screamingly so now.  For the sake of Celtic, do the necessary.

sorry mate not got a copy of it, I’m sure someone will though. Good luck with that, HH.

Je suis – spot on: the mentor idea won’t work because Neil himself doesn’t want it. I know because I once asked him and while he was quite circumpsect in his answer I got the feeling he was distinctly unenthusiastic about the whole idea. My belief is that should a mentor be appointed it would be the beginning of the end, becasue neil wouldn’t utilise it and/or it would cause conflict. It would also be a clear signal from the board that they lack confidence in him.

I have to say it – if you want to be celtic manager you have to be able to do the job yourself. I think Neil Lennon would agree with this. And if he’s not able to do the job (and I sincerely hope he can turn things around) then that’s the fault of the board, who should never have appointed a rookie in the first place.

  3. Cheers @poolbhoy.

oldtim67 – you say that neil is learning on the job, so why are things getting worse, not better? We are worse off than last season, and Neil is still tinkering with his team. I don’t see enough signs of progress. I go down on bended knee and pray that he can turn it round, and i would dearly love him to, but I am not perpared to support his tenure indefinately should things show no sign of improvement – and fast. No one, not even Neil Lennon, not even after what he has given and been through, can expect to cut their teeth as celtic manager. The expercations of too many people are at stake. As I said a minute ago, that’s the board’s fault for appointing a rookie, not Neil’s, who will end up being the latest fall guy for men who aren’t fit to sup in the same saloon as him.

I tweeted at the time it was a joke based on how it was done, Jeanette insists it was a joke and I believe her, but for me it had “hostage to fortune” written all over it at the time.

If it is accepted, even for the purposes of debate it was a joke and had no more than minimal influence, the only other person I had in the frame at the time was Craig Levein and on balance I thought knowing Celtic and its demands tipped the balance in Neil Lennon’s favour.

I wonder now how Levein would have reacted to Dougiegate and would he have been so villified by the media? Hmmmm?

  8. TBB

you could replace the words James McFadden, with Shane Long or Jay Bothroyd or even Shay Given , Sol Campbell, and Jimmy Bullard .

It’s as strong an indication as you can get that Neil is not in charge of transfers. That and the first hand accounts that we have heard from impeccable sources. Micro managers don’t let other people make decisions.

They see it as an Alpha Male thing, others see it is EGO. The results of that are being played out at Ibrox as we watch. Sadly we haven’t learnt that lesson and are making some of the same mistakes

alderyde avenue 17.49 It was nothing other than a cynical ploy by Peter Lawwell to butter up the supporters for the AGM.Any Celtic fan who cant see through this ploy by Peter must be blind.H.H.

  11. Managing Celtic no matter who you are is no place to be learning the job,if a mentor was to be put in place it had to happen as soon as Neil was appointed. In Scotland if you dont win the league then nothing else really matters.Neil has enjoyed more fan support than our last two managers and now has to be judged in football terms as the majority of managers are.

  12. I do not like the Hun getting banged up for eight months just because he spouted some bilge on the net; this is a very, very slippery slope and should be resisted. The law is here to protect and serve, supposedly, this case speaks otherwise. It gives Amadeus the chills, but he thinks you are mostly too dumb to see it!

Prove Amadeus wrong and do something about it.

Frankly, looking around me, I doubt there are many in Scotvania to understand, never mind resist these assaults on our freedom.

I will ask again as my copy of the game has been deleted from my tv box – does anyone have footage of this so that I can submit this to the compliance officer at the SFA for review?

My query about McCulloch’s challenge has been vetoed by Darryl Broadfoot on the basis that he played the ball (so it can’t be a foul then?) as well as the proximity of the referee (that reply made me lol). I would still like it referred so that this goes on record as a permissable tackle – this could then be used in any future appeal should any of our players see red for a similar challenge.

The smal tax bill was discovered during CW’s due diligence. It had I understand been floating around the lower echelons at Ibrox for an unknown time before provsion was made for it in the last accounts publsihed on 1st April (going from memory). The date is significant as it is one day after the day a bill formally becomes a liability that falls under FPP tax overdue rules, but it would be interesting to know at what point it became a liability to HMRC, which had to be before April the first.

It is for £1.4M and appeared in the accounts because it was not contested by Rangers. It attracts interest and penalties that are under appeal but the £1.4M liability has to predate the 31st March on which date it had to be paid by unless there was any appeal or arrangement to pay made.

It is the timing that makes its treatment suspicious , suspicion that a clear statement of how it was treated by the SFA would explain. Client confidentiality will be used not to clarify, but if there is nothing untoward, why not just clear the suspicion?

Surely there can be no talk of throwing in the towel a fortnight before the clocks go back? We have had 4 home games compared to their 6 in the league. They have now drawn twice at home in the league not to mention poor displays in Europe. Between injuries and tough European games Neil has not had his troubles to seek. If he needs more experience in his coaching department then fair enough-when have we ever gave a thought to how the media portray our dealings? He will feel under the cosh at times but he is getting well weighed in and as he has proven, has a tough wee ginger nut to crack.

  26. Sky Sports had a massive counter attraction Man U v Liverpool on yesterday but naturally there was no way I was going to watch this in preference to the Celts. However, the first half was such an unbelievable shambles that I felt I just could not take anymore and felt like switching off the TV set.

I soldiered on and watching the second half was like seeing Lazarus come back from the dead except on this occasion we had two miracle workers young Anthony Stokes and James forrest.

The fighting Irishman and the Scot possibly saved our season after the good news came in from Ibrox. Stokes almost won this game single handed and possibly was also denied a penalty in that unbelievable second half.

Kayal looked to be still carrying an injury and he has been such an exceptional player for us I’m prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt after such a poor display yesterday.

Kris Commons please hurry back the team needs you badly and on fire like last season.

Since it did not happen then it looks like it.

But had it been me I would have foreseen it having the effect of making the support more cynical and not have instigated it unless there was real intent to sign.

Much better to have stayed stum and announced JMCF as a signing at the AGM than make a brick for cynics to throw at me.
