Admiration for both Southend and Henrik

146

The business between Southend United and Henrik Larsson has been fascinating and reflects well on both of them.  After a run of six defeats, Kevin Bond resigned as Southend manager six weeks ago.  Since then the third tier club have resisted the greatest urge in football – appointing a manager.  They sit second bottom of the table, above only Bolton, who are on minus 8 points following administration.

Speaking to Henrik was an outrageously ambitious play for a club that looks destined for the bottom tier of English football.  They wanted Henrik, but not at any cost, they wanted him to have the necessary support to be a success in the job.

That support included recruiting someone with a knowledge of their league to act as chief scout.  Henrik’s former Celtic team-mate, Tommy Johnson, agreed to be that man, but with contracts all in place and Larsson set to fly in with Johan Mjallby as his assistant, Johnson had a last minute change of mind.

Lots of managers and clubs would proceed as planned and hope to recruit a suitable head of recruitment at a later date, but Southend chairman, Ron Martin and Henrik believed this part of their jigsaw was critically important and without it the picture would not work.

Feeling betrayed, Henrik insisted Martin did not up his offer to Johnson and they agreed not to conclude contracts.

Having waited during summer weeks for a managerial appointment, I cannot imagine how Southend fans are coping.  Without a permanent manager, the club is rudderless and no recovery is likely, but you have to admire Southend.  Better to wait and get it right, even now, seven points adrift from safety, than plough straight into a bad appointment.

But still, can you imagine if it was Celtic sitting on the pot for this time?  They will probably go down, but I hope the delay works out in the long term for Southend.

  1. HOT SMOKED,

I feel that Calmac (imo, our most important player) has been played way too often over the last couple of seasons. He hasn’t had time to rest properly, partly, I suppose, because he is so pivotal to the team.

  2. Parkhead CS

    Good point.

Right, this paricular son of The Garngad must now make his departure from Arbroath on The Emerald Express as it winds its way to The Dear green Place.

  3. I know it’s match day but I’ve got a bit of egg chasing to watch first. In truth I expect the All Blacks to hammer us but shure you never know. I’ll watch the first 10 minutes anyway.

  4. *** CQN PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2019-20 ***

    ** BACK IN BUSINESS!! **

With the return today of the REAL football, it’s also time to remind posters and lurkers alike that you are all very welcome to have a say in who becomes CQNs Player Of The Year for 2019-20. So, if you’ve not participated so far it’s perfectly OK for you to start doing so now. There’s no joining up arrangements – everyone can just vote after whichever games they watch or dip in and out as the season rolls along.

So, how do you participate? Well, it’s dead simple. After today’s game, decide on who were your best 3 performers (or occasionally you’ll be looking for the 3 that were least bad!!) and put their names in an email to be sent to me at CQNPOTY@GMAIL.COM . Your choices don’t have to be in any order, just your top 3. For each game, votes can be sent as soon as the final whistle goes right up until 10pm the following day.

Once all the votes are in I tally them up and the player with the highest receives 5 points, with the next 4 highest getting 4, 3, 2, 1.

I don’t plan to read EVERY post that’s made on here 😉. So may I ask that you vote by sending an email – nothing long winded, just 3 players’ names!

There’s nothing ‘official’ in any of this – just a wee bit of fun to maybe stimulate some debate on the Blog and give us another topic to discuss as the weeks go on.

Before the International break, our top 10 players were as follows –

    1. Ryan Christie – 17 points

    2. Odsonne Edouard – 16 points

    3. Scott Brown – 15 points

    4. James Forrest – 15 points

    5. Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo – 13 points

    6. Christopher Jullien – 12 points

    7. Moritz Bauer – 11 points

    8. Calum McGregor – 9 points

    9. Hatem Abd Elhamed – 8 points

    10. Mohamed Elyounoussi – 6 points

But with Ryan about to serve a 2-game suspension there’s sure to be a change at the top – and YOU can have a say in that! 😉

I look forward to seeing the votes flooding in from around 4.50pm today when, hopefully we will be back on top of the league!

    Hail Hail!

    Jobo

  8. Melbourne Mick on

Hello again all you young rebels.

Back home safe and sound much to the relief of my wee princess.

” Thank god ” she said, thought i was going to make my own dinners

    all week.

    Ahh… true love.

today i thought i’d go back to a nice little town nearby us, Beaconsfield, the

first place i visited when i arrived here in Oz, it was special because when i

entered the one and only tavern there was a framed and signed Celtic top

    up on the wall.

You can imagine my delight, and after many visits and quite a few requests

to the owner Frank to let me buy it for our CSC in Mornington, but no way.

Sadly i learned today Frank has passed on, the pub has been redecorated.

RIP Frank, but no Celtic top on the wall.

Sickened doesn’t do it justice, and no one knows where it went.

Now i’ve got another mission in life, or whats left of it.

Find the Celtic top and give it a new home where it belongs.

    To be continued.
