AGM ahead

974

Are you looking forward to the AGM tomorrow? As always on these occasions, the questions after the votes will be far more interesting than the formal business of the day. The Living Wage appears on the agenda for the third year, courtesy of the Trust. Celtic now pay at or above Living Wage rates, although they have not signed up to the Foundation and the pay increase for lower-waged members of staff was accompanied with the withdrawal of a discretionary bonus.

Not sure what the cost of this was, or the impact on staff, but we’ll no doubt hear about it tomorrow. I should also say that I’m not signed up to the Living Wage Foundation either, as it has no relevance for my business.

The performance of the team (imperious domestically, impervious to improvement in Europe) will be the central concern from the hall. Celtic are a Champions League club, this is our focus. We need to be competing on that platform regularly.

I expect, and hope, shareholders get an update on Resolution 12, which looks increasingly relevant. You can bet questions will also be asked on whether or not there was a conspiracy to break tax, SPL and SFA rules, and to subvert an SPL Commission.

There’s not a great deal Celtic can say on this matter for now, beyond their statement last week.

Many thanks to Jim Craig and Brendan Sweeney for joining us on the blog last night. These events see the blog at its best and last night’s was no exception. You can buy Brendan’s book, Celtic: The Early Years, or Alex Gordon’s latest, The Winds of Change, Managing Celtic from 1991-2005, at the CQN Bookstore.

  1. Mark McGee accused of mischief making as he say EBTs where wrong, honest men can’t be saying that?

McGhee fumes at Rangers EBTs over lost bonus

MARK McGhee has claimed that both he and the first-team squad he supervised at Fir Park in season 2007-08 lost out on bonus money due to them as a direct result of Rangers’ use of Employee Benefit Trusts.

The Lanarkshire club finished third behind champions Celtic and Walter Smith’s Rangers that season but McGhee argues that the Ibrox side’s unauthorised use of EBTs means that the Steelmen should be considered as the runners-up.

McGhee is equally unforgiving. “When I was [at Motherwell] first time around we finished third – and we probably should have been second, given what we’ve learned since about Rangers and their methods,” he said. (Various)

  2. Mark McGhee says cheating is wrong. And gets attacked for it. Only in Scottish football …

Anyway, back to matters on the pitch for the champions tomorrow. I heard that Tom Rogic picked up an injury on international duty. Has everyone else returned fit and healthy?

  3. I agree with SFTB. In that the AGM Is a total waste of time for fans to put their views forward

First and formost, Celtic fc is a football club and the most important thing is the team on the park We have a stadium and support 2nd to none Our financial clout is far far ahead of 3rd rate teams in Europe like Maribor, Legia, Molde and Malamo

Our appointed people on the board have one job that is to give us a team on the park , but we fail against clubs I have mentioned

They are failures and tomorrow they will blame everyone apart from themselves

EBT’s and living wage are of course important

But way way behind the team on the park

From scouting to coaching to projects on the park have failed us

    AGM’s will not change that

    Demonstrations in car parks will

If I was home that is where I would be

  5. Murdo was trying to draw attention to the situation that, Ronny’s a nae user.

Big Mark McGhee rattling the cheating huns ebt cage. Good!

Neither of these two gents will ever find their way into the PL puppet-manager box.

Roy Keane put his head roon the Parkhead gates and….he ran for the hills!

This ebt situation will be LNSed again….know why?

Cos, Celtic’s Tory directors ‘dont’ hurt as much as, the rebel Celtic fans who, are still on the outside….looking in, despite tens of £millions being raised over the years in countless share-issues.

Apathy will play a huge role in the coming weeks.

IMHO….Celtic will deal with this with their famous kid-gloves on.

They will say nothing for the fear that their complicity will be exposed.

    Can I prove it?….No.

    Can I smell it?….Yip.

Celtic’s cojones fell off when….Neil Lennon was reigned in after, bringing the establishment to its knees.

    Since then…..back of the bus.

The Internet Bampots will fight on gallantly but,…sadly….they don’t have the clout of an iron fist with the ‘official’ Celtic crest.

Sack The Board……or, the huns will come back and, get their twisted revenge….who in their right mind would want to pay into that?

    Good man!

The more that the anomalies of the Rangers saga and that of any other crime against sport, justice, integrity,aw f..k it,everything we were all brought up to believe in-that right is right and wrong will be punished-are highlighted, the better.

And as for highlighting the Moonman, more kudos. In the old days he wouldn’t have been near a newspaper. They still used sharp implements such as pens then…

  8. Listen to Sportsound last night, thought Paul done fine, didnt fall into the Rangers E B T S trap, and this about the living wage ,lord Livingston,i wish at times we would leave politics at the door at Celtic Park, fine by all means give to charity if you can afford it,personally myself I have done my bit over the yrs,and still do occasionally,a few months ago I said something about ,everytime I go to watch Celtic ,people with buckets asking for spare cash,i said at the time that enough is enough, and was called a miserable old GIT,well any body that knows me will tell you, that I’m not that type of person, anyway its my birthday to day 72 yrs old, been supporting Celtic home and away since I was 10 ,and just a stones throw from ,in my day Parkhead, now known as Celtic Park, season ticket holder for many a year, and yes that photo of the Hearse outside celtic park remember it well ,disgusting,

  9. Peter Lawwell: Our scouting department deserves enormous credit for the quality they’ve brought to Celtic.

*mibbees he’s a member of the same establishment doon in Helensburgh as naesurname.

  11. Good morning CQN , good to see Mark McGhee joining in the EBT debate . IMO this situation will only be resolved when the cheating and corruption that has gone on in Scottish football ( we all know the culprits ) is exposed to a wider audience . UEFA, FIFA ( I know there are issues with both organisations ) and real journalists in England and around Europe need to be used to expose the ongoing coverup.

If this fight is lost then the game is finished in this country .

  12. Awe FFS.

In a perfect world, Warburton would like to add an older player to his squad in January.

Whether money will be available is another matter, but the aim for the manager is to bring in more experience.

Asked if this is what he wanted, Warburton said: “If the right person becomes available, yes, but they’re few and far between who would be good enough to play for us.

I have noticed that virtually all of us more mature residents of this parish have a similar holistic view of the club.

We don’t seem as ” needy” for the club to provide the answer to all the world’s ills.

Perhaps it is due to our back log of Celtic memories, from the 50’s, which have taken us through all the emotions known to man, that make us more tolerant.

Or, perhaps it is down to the JFK phrase of “Ask not….”

More likely though it’s just because we’re getting old!
