AGM ahead

974

Are you looking forward to the AGM tomorrow? As always on these occasions, the questions after the votes will be far more interesting than the formal business of the day. The Living Wage appears on the agenda for the third year, courtesy of the Trust. Celtic now pay at or above Living Wage rates, although they have not signed up to the Foundation and the pay increase for lower-waged members of staff was accompanied with the withdrawal of a discretionary bonus.

Not sure what the cost of this was, or the impact on staff, but we’ll no doubt hear about it tomorrow. I should also say that I’m not signed up to the Living Wage Foundation either, as it has no relevance for my business.

The performance of the team (imperious domestically, impervious to improvement in Europe) will be the central concern from the hall. Celtic are a Champions League club, this is our focus. We need to be competing on that platform regularly.

I expect, and hope, shareholders get an update on Resolution 12, which looks increasingly relevant. You can bet questions will also be asked on whether or not there was a conspiracy to break tax, SPL and SFA rules, and to subvert an SPL Commission.

There’s not a great deal Celtic can say on this matter for now, beyond their statement last week.

Many thanks to Jim Craig and Brendan Sweeney for joining us on the blog last night. These events see the blog at its best and last night’s was no exception. You can buy Brendan’s book, Celtic: The Early Years, or Alex Gordon’s latest, The Winds of Change, Managing Celtic from 1991-2005, at the CQN Bookstore.

Brendan Sweeney was right the other night when he spoke about us now having the opportunity to be inside at the AGM as opposed to standing in Kerrydale Street in the pissing rain.

    Thank you for that Fergus.

Question them folks. This is our club, the millions of us over the past 127 years who’ve physically bought into Celtic Football Club, in some way, for our own reasons.

Today, after work, I’ll be adding to that vision of Brother Walfrid by collecting my daughter’s first season ticket from Parkhead.

    But I do know this….

Murdo MacLeod was booted in the cojones by two Celtic hierarchies.

Auldheid etc…have been the gallant crusaders in the pursuit of justice, I wish them well.

But, I have said all along that….the ‘only’ way that there will be any justice is if….a Celtic board with, the fans financial gun pointed at the boards heids….are forced to finance a team of legal eagles to rattle the cages of the Scottish establishment….and….to make it clear that, there will be no let up until that justice is ours.

Anything else will, I fear….be no more than a gallant crusade….maybe even, a board constructed charade.

Brendan Sweeney and, the rest of the Celts For Change group are thee, authentic heroes of 1994.

BS says that it’s great that fans are allowed into the AGM but…the fans dont have any more control of the club than they did under the Kelly’s & White’s.

Celts For Change and, the Celtic clique in the media from 1994 – Keevins / McNee / Cooney / Delahunt / Provan were all….USED…by Fergus McCann…to win the hearts and minds of the Celtic support.

Fergus McCann took all the share-issue money then….locked you all outside…were you’ve always been!

The AGM today should see the Celtic board coming out with the following statement – “Celtic supporters / players / manager / shareholders were all cheated by Rangers FC. We, will have the best team of legal eagles on the case and, they won’t rest until justice is served.”

    ….Off oot….

I see bigger leagues being mooted again. I’m in favour only once the mess that is the administration of our game is sorted…not because some teams and tribute clubs have reached their glass ceiling.

Thanks Chris McLaughlin for telling me I’m not happy….never remeber having a conversation with him….yes much needs done with our club however, we’re light years ahead of everyone in Scotland and many in England living with-in our means, maybe a wee bit too cautious. The last few months have excenuated what we have been against as a club over the previous twenty years, cheating and duplicition on an industrial scale, not an easy thing to set a course through. We are where we are despite this!

AGM today I won’t attend although I can, I would like to see employees get a fair wage and be happy with that not meeting a cause that sets a minimum standard, I would like to see us better prepared for the Champions league qualifiers by buying in January ( I still think that the Europa section will go down to the last game…that’s our style!) and better facilities for match days supported by better traffic management getting away from the grounds.

I hope these ads are worth it, becaue now the ‘experience’ is like tryin’ to listen to a favourite programme on the ole wireless only to have the content drenched in static. Gggrrrr

  16. Whilst I commend the work being undertaken to help my club become a more ethical employer, I am, mostly underwhelmed or uninterested in AGMs. I cannot recall any historic Celtic event taking place there or any momentous decisions being announced there. Like most AGMs for limited companies, they are an occasion where the big shareholders get to organise things so that they can sail through as unscathed as possible. I think this is one occasion where anarchist thinking is right- if AGMs changed anything they’d abolish them.

I know we will get a chance to challenge Ronny Deila on his weak European record but I’d rather that was done in a football forum and not a business setting. I know that some will relish the chance to “challenge” our suits on business strategy and obscene bonuses and I genuinely wish them good luck with that, but I have severe doubts that you can make people change their attitudes through individuals asking individual questions at a public meeting where the agenda is controlled and biased against influence from the floor. Without organisation and discipline, such as that exerted by the Celtic Trust, you will not get the coordination necessary to land a blow effectively. You need to have difficult questions posed by effective point-makers who have co-ordinated in advance to not make overlapping points on the same small area. Too often the reports I receive make the AGM sound like a Clyde phone-in where any effective blow landed by a fan is reduced by the effect of follow up calls concentrating on squirrel-sighting.

I hope that a better resolution of The Living Wage comes about. I hope the Board voluntarily reduce the level of the bonus culture in the Boardroom. But I do not expect that to happen without real pressure- too often they just breathe a sigh of relief that they have “survived” an AGM rather than contributed to an effective AGM. In doing business to reflect shareholder’s interests, they reflect largely the interests of the major shareholders, not the many shareholders and the many more disenfranchised non-shareholders who are merely stakeholders.

    My modest solution-

    1) Separate the Football feedback from the Business feedback. Ronny is not responsible for corporate policy- he is a distraction at an AGM.

    2) Let the AGM become the bland vessel the Board want it to become

    3) Organise the discontent via the Celtic Trust or the Celtic Supporter’s Association and use the minority small shareholder’s votes to try to embarrass the club into holding an EGM in years where there are issues that desperately need to be tackled. The embarrasment and extra expense may concentrate minds more and it would become less of an annual ritual if it was not indulged annually.

    4) Use the Celtic Trust or similar organisation to suggest ways to mitigate our vulnerabilities as a club being the plaything of the major shareholders because we are a private company.

    5) Do not become a Trust or Supporter’s group who just cries for a bigger player spend each year- those decisions have to be made by a smaller, more informed football group- the hired management. Instead, concentrate on how we present ourselves as a club to the world and how we get back and maintain the ethical and charitable values that we would like to see ourselves as having.

Having said all that, good luck to those of you who find these events more fascinating than I do.

    SFTB – great post.

Like many others on here, I am a small shareholder who takes little interest in the AGM.

If there was a real effort to concentrate discussion and voting rights on specific issues – RES 12, OBAF Act, Executive Bonus compensation – rather than participating in an organized rabble, I would certainly be interested.

The idea of having a pressure group to force EGM’s in specific circumstances to address specific issues is a very good one.

  20. Just listened to the Sportsound podcast featuring Paul.

Thought it was good, of course we’re never going to get the praise we deserved but the panel did seem to appreciate we are a very we’ll run Club, they did seem to appreciate our Social Charter makes us different and they did seem to appreciate our Foundation does good works.

Of course they tended to examine the negatives, our European form and Ronny’s record/future, but as that what we do who can blame them, the vast majority of the programme was given to discuss Celtic issues as well, yeah I thought it was good.

Of course I didn’t agree with it all and I can’t describe much of Tom English’s input as fair comment, it’s sad to hear a well informed man use his knowledge to come to some preconceived conclusion regardless of the facts that he is all too aware of.

Of course Paul did very well, I’m sure when fair minded folk hear this type of programme and listen to a Blogger who is assured of his opinions, very we’ll informed and the most measured of the panel – people must wonder who are these internet Bampots the SMSM are talking about.

Also anyone who was expecting more on the EBTs, more what, bombast? Paul struck just the right note with his – wait to see what happens on an appeal and then due process must be followed before talk of any punishments should be discussed.

We know their narrative, it was espoused by Tom English, it has been ramped up for weeks since the BTC decision. The fall-out is going to be huge, for oldco, newco, Directors and Footballers.

I’m 100% sure the Scottish Football authorities know they can’t avoid this – they will be many praying for an appeal, if it doesn’t happen the Blue Touch paper is lit….

As you know I appreciate all your efforts on res12. However, I am not sure there will be any consequences. Ideally title and trophy stripping and SFA dismantling. Everything regrading EBT’s and SFA cheating will be proven. However, at best I think there will just be a few sacrificial succulent lambs.

    =========

Personally I couldn’t care less if it is shown they broke the rules in a manner so serious that titles should be voided but aren’t.

It tells much about their values if they do not recognise the unfairness of such a decision.

It is that apparent inability to appreciate they were cheating that bothers me. If it’s part of their nature what’s to stop them doing all they can to damage Celtic or win unfairly repeatedly?

We need governance that recognises that one of the dogs in the dog pound simply cannot avoid biting others and in the absence of removing it, it has to be muzzled.

That does mean a few heads rolling but if it is not accompanied by a root and branch review of how our game is governed and the introduction of a more accountable mechanism than resolutions to club AGMs then I’ll think the game will have failed itself.

That is absolutely spot on. In a country where a request for due process to be followed to allow for sporting integrity to be upheld is viewed as interference or sour grapes or motivated out of hatred – in our case presented as Bigotry – (I apologise for using a cliche) but you would have to go to North Korea to find such a concerted effort to disregard wrongdoing on this scale.
