AGM ahead

974

Are you looking forward to the AGM tomorrow? As always on these occasions, the questions after the votes will be far more interesting than the formal business of the day. The Living Wage appears on the agenda for the third year, courtesy of the Trust. Celtic now pay at or above Living Wage rates, although they have not signed up to the Foundation and the pay increase for lower-waged members of staff was accompanied with the withdrawal of a discretionary bonus.

Not sure what the cost of this was, or the impact on staff, but we’ll no doubt hear about it tomorrow. I should also say that I’m not signed up to the Living Wage Foundation either, as it has no relevance for my business.

The performance of the team (imperious domestically, impervious to improvement in Europe) will be the central concern from the hall. Celtic are a Champions League club, this is our focus. We need to be competing on that platform regularly.

I expect, and hope, shareholders get an update on Resolution 12, which looks increasingly relevant. You can bet questions will also be asked on whether or not there was a conspiracy to break tax, SPL and SFA rules, and to subvert an SPL Commission.

There’s not a great deal Celtic can say on this matter for now, beyond their statement last week.

Many thanks to Jim Craig and Brendan Sweeney for joining us on the blog last night. These events see the blog at its best and last night’s was no exception. You can buy Brendan’s book, Celtic: The Early Years, or Alex Gordon’s latest, The Winds of Change, Managing Celtic from 1991-2005, at the CQN Bookstore.

I think Ronny has the makings of a top class Manager.

I think anyone who cannot see that is not very bright.

I think controversial posts are interesting.

Humour is an interesting form of argument.

Desperate to come on here and say “I told you so” if we win f all and Ronny gets pumped.

I wanted Tony Mowbray replaced but I never missed a game supporting the team to hoped for victories.

And I was at Paisley that night supporting my team.

You and your friends on here will say you are entitiled to your opinion, but you speak of Celtic and her manager as a hun would.

    Not for me.

    C’MON THE CELTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    C’MON RONNY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Doesent matter when the AGM is, it’s the same malcontent Trotsky (a want on the board) mob, the AGM stands for Anual Groundhogsday Muppets. Fun on the first couple, but after that it’s boring and cringeworthy, IMO that is.

  4. Anyone criticising the manager is clearly anti Norwegian, Think our number 11 is a waste of money? You’re anti Dutch. Can’t stand Richard Gough? Obviously a case of severe SwedishbornScotaphobia.

You get the point I’m sure.

  5. BMCUW

I agree with you re Bankier.

It will be interesting to see if the board sits on it’s hands on this one.

For me this is a SERIOUS matter, a game changer.

I doubt bankier has the bottle to resign.

Serious question – What does Bankier deliver to the club/fans in his role at Celtic?

  6. FGF

    Hope the leg is better!

Can you bring your boots on Saturday, big Bo is injured!

    Take care.

  7. Did bankier say ‘anyone abusing Livingston is racist’

Or did he claim he’s received racist abuse from some?

Any links to his exact words?

    Ta in advance

those suggesting Ronnie is the right man to lead us to better things will be better informed after the next two european games..as will those who think he is not the right man for the job…

But whoever thinks whatever..it doesn’t matter. The only view is Lawwell’s view and that’s my way or the highway.

Dwindling attendance/ turnover + drying up of saleable talent will be his undoing….

You may well be right. Everyone who had any reason whatsoever to disagree with the board is a raging Trot.

Do you think, therefore, that it is acceptable to accuse a person who disagrees with the active politics of a board member to have done so on the basis of his religion, and to have been decried as racist and sectarian?

Tony, support the board by all means. No problem.

    But that is indefensible.

  10. thats the red tops headlines made for tomorrow morning then!!! never fails after every AGM…we give them way too much ammunition…anything to stop them writing about the huns they will jump all over it…….

  14. BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS on

    PHILBHOY

As reported on here-i was somewhat absent-he is not for me.

    He never was.

As chair of a company like ours,a club like ours, holding a tradition like ours,he has been anonymous except when telling us to behave ourselves,or accusing of us racist and sectarian abuse against a man whose religion we neither knew nor were the slightest bit interested in.

As chair,he is as much use as a two-legged stool. On a waltzer.

  15. I think it’s fair enough for the chairman to raise the issue of one of the board members receiving racial abuse if that’s what has happened. In fact he has a moral duty to do so – it’s important that racists are called out.

However, he appears to want to use this to have a go at a shareholder asking a question. That’s a different thing altogether.

    We need some clarification.

  16. Bmcw

What I will tell you is, I’m accompanying my brother to the boardroom tomorrow for the game, and if mr Bankier is there I will ask him where this came from, of that I can assure you.

  17. BMCUW

I suspect your post will be agreeable to many on here, including me.

I take it he gets a salary, car, benefits package including pension, death in service, health insurance and health care (BUPA), oh and an EXPENSES account.

I guess he could take his pals to the CP to watch a match and enjoy hospitality at no cost.

I would like to see his KPI’s before his next appraisal.

(I made that last bit up – he won’t get an appraisal)

We really need to hunt this guy, imo.

First I knew of Livingston’s religion.

I’m sure I’m not alone in that.

Does anyone know the religion of any other board members?

    Or care?

Bankier has made this an issue. Not the shareholder who raised the question. Nor even Livingston himself,IMO. He has an absolute right to vote as he feels.

Bankier doesn’t have an absolute right, nor any right at all,to label us as racist and sectarian while defending him.

He has to go. And he might do well,in future,to refrain from sampling his next company’s product.

He was clearly allergic to Celtic, and I doubt his previous post served him well either.

  21. ” I am looking forward to it tremendously and hope that my own contributions to the future success and well-being of this club will be as positive as those of my predecessors ”

Ian Bankier on being appointed our Chairman, lifted from Wiki.

  22. STV out with the PR offensive

One shareholder was given a rousing round of applause when he claimed Livingston’s “role in society is contrary to the ethos of the club”.

Bankier rounded on some of Glasgow-born Livingston’s critics but his speech was met with calls of “shame” from some in the hall at Celtic Park.

Bankier claimed the former BT Group chief executive, whose full title is Lord Livingston of Parkhead, had been “subject to a torrent of utterly base personal abuse conducted over social media over recent weeks”.

“The messages posted, in quite a few cases are criminally racist and in all cases the vocabulary chosen is base and highly abusive.

“And what sickens me to the core is that the campaign is conducted in the name of (Celtic founder) Brother Walfrid.

“Ian Livingston is a consummately able business executive. We are grateful that he is prepared to devote his time and considerable talents to the affairs of this club.”

He added: “The fact that he also happens to be a member of the House of Lords creates no conflict of interest with the business of Celtic. We are a football club. We play football – and we are good at it.

“Our fans come from every quarter of society and share the common bond of supporting the team.

“We are not a conduit for political statements and campaigns. No fan or section of fans has the right to set up a stall that proclaims political intolerance in the name of what they invariably cite as their club.

“Our club is not available to anyone for that purpose. I condemn this activity and appeal to you to see it for what it is because intolerance soon leads to hatred and hatred leads to a lot worse as we well know.”

Bankier also said at the AGM that the living wage is not in the interest of the club.

The living wage replaced the previous scheme at the club which included a lower rate but a bonus for staff. This left some employees unhappy.

A resolution was made at the AGM for the club to become an accredited living wage employer. The issue will go to a poll and be voted on later.

The rate was this month increased by the Living Wage Foundation from £7.85 to £8.25, however Celtic bosses say they are yet to make a decision on the introduction of the new rate.

The independent Living Wage Foundation is a non-statutory body which aims to make wages match the cost of living has been adopted by around 380 firms across Scotland.

However, Mr Bankier said on Friday that it is not in the interest of Celtic shareholders to have its wage policy “directed by a non-statutory body”.

He said: “It’s not in the interests of Celtic to sign up to the living wage because the Living Wage Foundation is a non-statutory body. It’s a complex area for government to balance out all the factors.

“It’s important to us we can run the business and the club for the benefit of all the shareholders and it’s just not in the interest of the shareholders to have wage policy, an important part of our cost base, directed by a non-statutory body.

  23. I suspect the accusation of racism stems from someone having criticised Livingston for being a Zionist.
