AGM ahead

974

Are you looking forward to the AGM tomorrow? As always on these occasions, the questions after the votes will be far more interesting than the formal business of the day. The Living Wage appears on the agenda for the third year, courtesy of the Trust. Celtic now pay at or above Living Wage rates, although they have not signed up to the Foundation and the pay increase for lower-waged members of staff was accompanied with the withdrawal of a discretionary bonus.

Not sure what the cost of this was, or the impact on staff, but we’ll no doubt hear about it tomorrow. I should also say that I’m not signed up to the Living Wage Foundation either, as it has no relevance for my business.

The performance of the team (imperious domestically, impervious to improvement in Europe) will be the central concern from the hall. Celtic are a Champions League club, this is our focus. We need to be competing on that platform regularly.

I expect, and hope, shareholders get an update on Resolution 12, which looks increasingly relevant. You can bet questions will also be asked on whether or not there was a conspiracy to break tax, SPL and SFA rules, and to subvert an SPL Commission.

There’s not a great deal Celtic can say on this matter for now, beyond their statement last week.

Many thanks to Jim Craig and Brendan Sweeney for joining us on the blog last night. These events see the blog at its best and last night’s was no exception. You can buy Brendan’s book, Celtic: The Early Years, or Alex Gordon’s latest, The Winds of Change, Managing Celtic from 1991-2005, at the CQN Bookstore.

  1. I have no idea what religion Livingstone is, it’s the blue half of Glasgow who are into that kind of garbage, if he cannot show evidence TO THE POLICE (where it should go) of this “criminally sectarian” stuff then he should go.

Can Celtic be all inclusive AND have a support which demands the dismissal of someone because he supports Tory policy?

The real question is not about hid dismissal. It is about his appointment.

DD can happily support the appointment of numpties like Livingstone and ~Bankier, yet he would wrap his guts around a thorn bush before countenancing the appointment of a supporter’s director.

Very much a policy of keep the unwashed well away.

going back ( A LONG WAY!) to undergraduate philosophy …. what we heard today was a classic example of argumentum ergo decedo …. responding to an argument by crticizing the maker of the argument, rather than responding to the argument itself …. that would get you a F in a first year philosophy course …. we should be able to expect a bit better from our Board.

I was in the gardening class. However, it would appear that board are taking a leaf out the book of those practicing the politics we have all to keep out of Celtic.

    NEVER.

On BDO appealing, most professional commentators think it’s a shoo-in that they will. Whether they do or not will depend on the mood of the Creditors’ committee.

The Creditors as a whole stand only to lose from appealing the decision, given that there is no financial reward for a win, and only the costs of representation are at stake.

Win or lose, the Creditors’ pot pays the bill.

That said, HMRC now dwarf all other creditors, and if the BTC decision stands, will take the vast majority of the proceeds from the liquidation, to the detriment of the smaller creditors. BDO might well be minded to appeal in order to serve the interests of the smaller creditors. They’d be entitled to.

As regards the Murray Group, I understand that the liquidators – Deloitte – elected not to pay for MIH to be repesented at the court of session – Deloitte had the same decision to make as BDO. On this basis, MIH/Murray Group have lost standing in the case, and have no locus in the matter. They’re oot.

  16. Oh dear…..

Firstly, SFTB, a fantastic post this morning about the reasons for the existence of the Celtic Trust. Much of our work is done behind the scenes but often takes an incredible amount of organisation which is mostly unrecognised. That’s not a gripe it’s just a matter of fact. A lot of the stuff that we deal with is individual supporters who have issues with some aspect of Celtic but have got nowhere through their own direct contact with the club.

I know you know this but it’s worth pointing out that those of us on the committee are Celtic supporters of long standing, the majority still follow home and away every week.

We’re not about attacking individual members of the Celtic board. Our raison d’être is to uphold the ethos of Brother Walfrid and our founding fathers. Only if the Plc board go against that ethos will there be conflict and dispute.

In my opinion both Livingstone and Bankier should step down immediately.

I have my issues with PeterLawell but at least he’s a Tim.

  17. Very moving tribute to big Billy at the en of the AGM today.

I do hope all is well with him, I heard he had been suffering from ill health.

  18. So 137 of the 140 Celtic employees who received the Living Wage (for 4 months) were happy to receive it.

Hopefully that bangs on the head the suggestion from one or two that we were meddling without consulting staff.

  19. HT,

    Let’s call a spade a spade,

Tony Donnely and Macjay had/have a problem with paying a living wage

  20. Oh and no problem with executives taking unearned bonuses while labelling Celtic supporters sectarian, yes master springs to mind

  21. Official site;

CELTIC Chairman Ian Bankier has thanked shareholders for their attendance and contribution at today’s

Annual General Meeting, and following media coverage of the event, he has also clarified remarks which he made during the AGM.

“I would like to thank all our shareholders and supporters who attended today’s AGM. As ever, we enjoyed a healthy exchange of views and yet again it was fantastic to see the passion for all that is going on around our great Club.

“Already there has been some media coverage of my comments relating to Ian Livingston and his proposed re-appointment and much of it has been wildly exaggerated and taken totally out of context.

“I have not branded our supporters racist and it is outrageous to suggest that I would ever do that. I was only referring to a small number of specific comments which have been made on social media, which I believe are unacceptable, and I know Celtic supporters would agree with me.

“Celtic supporters are the lifeblood of the Club and I am delighted to say the best in football, with the best of values.

“I thank everyone again for attending today’s AGM to express their views.”

Can Celtic be all inclusive AND have a support which demands the dismissal of someone because he supports Tory policy?

    ———————————————————————————————————–

The answer to your question is basically self explanatory. No.

    HH.

  23. Canamalar

Indeed Tony and Macjay were the ones I was referring to.

Today our chairman claimed that paying a LW would not be in the interests of the club.

Meanwhile at Parkhead tomorrow the Green Brigade are holding a food drive which will be contributed to by thousands of ordinary Tims.

Walfrid’s spirit lives on just not amongst some of our board members.

  24. So Bankier was sitting reading social media when it all kicked off, aye right, fcuk off Bankier and take yer slavers with you.

  25. HT,

A pair of Uriah heep’s, too many for a club with our ethos, they shame us every time they demand the poor can look after themselves, and let’s be honest, everytime they argued about who asked the poor, that is exactly what they were advocating.

Let the low paid speak up for themselves and watch our board sack them for being uppity. A pair of low life’s that shame our club in my expert opinion.

  26. mike in toronto on

Whitedog …. that’s it! I’ll see you by the swingset at recess! :)

How ya doing? You’ll laugh at this … the better half is going pretty hard core vegetarian …. so my barbq course in January has turned into a vegetarian cooking course! I bet Ferran Adria never had to put up with that!

  27. Oops there’s three, good on you whitedoghunch, keep the poor begging, make sure pretentious food reviews can only be experienced by people that have money, that way taste buds will always be what exactly ? Definitely not shared eh ?
