AGM ahead

974

Are you looking forward to the AGM tomorrow? As always on these occasions, the questions after the votes will be far more interesting than the formal business of the day. The Living Wage appears on the agenda for the third year, courtesy of the Trust. Celtic now pay at or above Living Wage rates, although they have not signed up to the Foundation and the pay increase for lower-waged members of staff was accompanied with the withdrawal of a discretionary bonus.

Not sure what the cost of this was, or the impact on staff, but we’ll no doubt hear about it tomorrow. I should also say that I’m not signed up to the Living Wage Foundation either, as it has no relevance for my business.

The performance of the team (imperious domestically, impervious to improvement in Europe) will be the central concern from the hall. Celtic are a Champions League club, this is our focus. We need to be competing on that platform regularly.

I expect, and hope, shareholders get an update on Resolution 12, which looks increasingly relevant. You can bet questions will also be asked on whether or not there was a conspiracy to break tax, SPL and SFA rules, and to subvert an SPL Commission.

There’s not a great deal Celtic can say on this matter for now, beyond their statement last week.

Many thanks to Jim Craig and Brendan Sweeney for joining us on the blog last night. These events see the blog at its best and last night’s was no exception. You can buy Brendan’s book, Celtic: The Early Years, or Alex Gordon’s latest, The Winds of Change, Managing Celtic from 1991-2005, at the CQN Bookstore.

  1. My friends in Celtic,

Glad to hear that Ronny has the full support of the board. Not the dreaded “vote of confidence” that perhaps some wished to hear.

Regarding suitability of Celtic board members, frankly a few good Euro results would have the majority of fans onboard and the “issue” of political allegiances would be ignored.

Not all fans, but I would wager the majority.

I personally do not expect all Celtic board members to agree with my political thinking, to emulate my allegiances or follow my lifestyle any more than I would expect of my Employers board members. Why should they. ?

It is better to do our talking on the park and let the Celtic foundation do our talking off it.

Daily Ranger reporting BDO to appeal Tax Case. No mention of this anywhere else yet.

    ————————————————–

The quote in the article from BDO actually says “The Joint Liquidators are still considering their options in light of the court’s decision.

“The Joint Liquidators intend to consult further with their legal advisors and the Liquidation Committee before making a decision about whether to appeal the case. No decision has yet been made.”

Cheers mate – that’s an article and a half, isn’t it? Just one of the other wee (£1M) bungs to our erstwhile ‘Old Firm buddies’.

Hard to comment on Bankier’s stance in terms of that interview – he comes across as a dispassionate businessman in terms of ensuring product placement – although it is notable that they were only keen to see their brand when the ball hit the back of the Ibrox net!!!

Irrespective of that article and his business acumen though, I must say have seen nothing from him in his time that does anything other than harm the public perception of the Celtic supporters – he seems to only ever open his mouth about us when it is to say something negative or derogatory.

Ridiculous that a small number of our fans bring politics into what should be a footballing AGM …. SAME OLD, SAME OLD …. Ian Livingston is a really good Celtic Supporter, which is good enough for me ….Mr Bankier should not have taken the bait….

And what sickens me to the core is that the campaign is conducted in the name of (Celtic founder) Brother Walfrid.

I have to say I was proud of the 10,000 that signed up and I cannot see why using Brother Walfrid´s name here is a problem.

I cannot work out Bankiers juxtaposition with it .

I think if he was properly questioned on it and he answered honestly it would be highly revealing.

These parasites need removed from Celtic. The quicker the better.

Once they are confirmed as being Old Firm (and they will be) it will be interesting to see how that affects season ticket sales.

At that time WE hit the back of the Ibrox net so often that I wonder if his decision to invest in the hoops came about due to the miserable, ugly Hun mugs above his advertising board in every photo/video of a goal…

  8. Received an e-mail from customer services with subject line of tax avoidance and its consequences for Celtic fans.

Simply deleted it without opening it.

    Anybody know anything about his.

  9. Massive own goald by the gimlet eyed “behave yourselves” Bankier.

I have never heard this man open his mouth without damaging Celtic, usally through their fans and today must be the high-water mark of this “foot in mouth” buffooon.

I haven’t seen any racist comments about Lord Livingstone far less any that are “criminally racist” as Bankier claims. But if there are any then he shold bring them to the attention of the police and in accordance with the OB Act (that I am convinced Bankier had a hand in promoting) the perpetrators will be charged and prosecuted.

This will not happen of course because he is talking a lot of pish to get his Tory chum of the hook.

With friends like Bankier and Lord Livingstone who needs enemies.

  10. Sat through another embarrassing performance from our Chairman, again all too quick to turn on our own. He actually had a pre prepared statement backing Livingstone,as soon as the subject was brought up. His manner and body language,at AGM’s is shocking imo. He has all the charisma of a Celtic Park pie. A Celtic supporter, maybe. A Celtic man? Never.

  11. Just caught up with the agm.

    Mmmmmm.

So our chairman has accused the Celtic support of being criminally racist. Does he have the evidence of such criminal racism?

This in the same week that the msm start to equate calling for criminality at the Huns to be dealt with with sectarianism.

And in the country where a specific law was passed to criminalise Celtic supporters and aspects of Catholicism?

Do you remember that bit in Animal Farm where the animals could no longer distinguish the pigs from the humans?

What exactly is the difference between our board, the msm and the rest of institutionally racist Scotland.

More evidence, should it be needed of the betrayal going on in your midst. More evidence of the boards utter contempt for the Celtic support. More evidence of the disconnect between boardroom and supporter.

This should be bankiers Gerald ratner moment. What company can call its customers criminally racist and survive?

And still the sychophants on cqn try to find excuses?

Jeez who’d have thunk it eh?

  12. Awe_Naw

I sincerely hope he meant those Celtic supporters who abuse on social media

‘sicken him to the core’ and not ‘the campaign’ being conducted in the name of Brother Walfrid.

Though it would have been better if he had just said or been asked precisely what he meant, we’ll probably never know .

The AGM passes with a wee bit of deflection, on present political issues and being a tad unlucky in Europe, again.

We continue with the trying to find diamonds in the midden transfer policy, and even the poor EPL clubs are much richer than us.

No mention of how to stop, let alone reverse the emptying stadium trend.

Having read Bankier’s comments today as well as other things he has said over the last few years I would suggest it would be best for all concerned if he were to be replaced ASAP. I have never understood what he brings to the table other than division.

I like Lawwell, think he understands the club fully and does his best whilst following his remit. He is the link between the fans and the board. The only one brave enough to stand up and be counted. He’s not perfect by any means but I can’t see who’d do a better job.

On Lord Livingstone I have no personal view as I can’t recall anything he has said. I might not agree with his politics but it is personal matter. Is there any evidence he brings something of value to the club? If so, let it be known so we can judge him on that. After all, we put up with Dr. Death when he came out swinging for the club. I didn’t like his politics either.

The BDO committee consists of seven members, which includes the two liquidation partners from BDO. They currently have less than £15m at their disposal.

Engaging is more litigation, with the inordinate costs of a Supreme Court Ruling falling due, might decimate what’s left of the Collyer Bristow settlement. There is no guarantee at this point that a further consideration could be exacted from RIFC plc should the assets revert to BDO.

BDO cannot consider an appeal on their own. They will only proceed if David Murray chooses to risk his Knighthood by taking this appeal to its inevitable conclusion. I cannot conceive of any appeal being upheld.

I also cannot conceive that The Court of Session will grant BDO/SDM leave to appeal. This is ordinarily only granted on a majority decision, not a unanimous decision

This first appeared in The Herald, a paper which is very close to Murray. It is of no disadvantage to Murray if the fans think he is pushing for an appeal only for BDO to decide not to go ahead. That way he can shrug his shoulders and retire to his vineyards.

  23. Ian Bankier was unknown as a Celtic Fan when he was appointed. He has since only shown his poor performance that he is unfit for purpose. He doesn’t understand the club and he doesn’t know the history.

    Its time that we went.

I suggest that a campaign be started to oust this imposter. He is no financial big hitter and has obviously no feeling for the Fans.

My votes will be proxied against his re-election in future AGMs

on a more serious note ….

I dont understand why Bankier felt the need to make the comments he did today ….. if it was meant to defend Livngstone, it doesn’t do so …. either the criticism of Livingstone is valid or it isn’t, regardless of who said it. the response seems to be a cheap way to cut off discussion …. a poor man’s godwin’s law …. the inference being that if some people who criticized Livingstone are racist, anyone who criticizes him must also be racist …

more generally, I wish our Board were as passionate about defending our fans when our fans are unfairly attacked as they are about (i) defending themselves and (ii) criticizing our fans.

“Celtic fans should stop gloating because without Rangers to hate they’d be lost” – Chris Lowry, Irish Independent 8 March 2012

    Dear Gavin,

I was very disappointed to read the above article in the opinion section of the Irish Independent website yesterday. The high standards of journalism, that the IN&M claim to uphold, were clearly ignored when this article was published. It is frankly a disgusting piece of journalism that does a disservice to the IN&M Group. This type of gutter press is not what I would have expected from a company in which I have invested a substantial sum of money. Mr. Lowry’s article is littered with ill-informed stereotypical remarks, which are offensive to Celtic FC, Rangers FC and indeed football fans in general. He has made a broad brushed attack, branding both Rangers and Celtic Football Clubs as organisations whose “raison d’etre is …to taunt, abuse and whenever possible physically attack rival fans ” and describing their respective supporters as being “as loathsome as each other”. Effectively Mr Lowry is branding both Football Clubs and all their supporters as sectarian thugs and louts. This is a complete falsehood, bordering on bigotry. It is offensive, not just to me as a fan, but to the millions who support these two huge clubs. Mr Lowry also claimed that Celtic fans are gloating at Rangers FC’s financial situation. To be clear as a director, shareholder and supporter of Celtic FC, I take no personal satisfaction in the current misfortunes of Rangers FC. Anyone with even a basic knowledge of Celtic FC would know that it adopts a zero tolerance towards racism, prejudice and violence. These are major issues for all of football and one which Celtic FC takes very seriously. For your information, I have attached below Celtic FC’s pro-active strategy to reduce instances of racism and prejudice. It strikes me that Mr Lowry is exactly the type of person Celtic FC had in mind when it designed this code. It is the ill informed and prejudiced mindset of people like Mr Lowry, that clubs like Celtic FC are trying to root out. “Celtic Football Club will not tolerate unacceptable conduct at Celtic Park or at away football stadium. Unacceptable conduct is conduct which is violent or disorderly. Violent conduct includes any actual, attempted, or threatened physical violence against any person, or intentional damage to property.

    Disorderly conduct includes:

o Conduct which stirs up or sustains, or is likely or is designed to stir up or sustain, hatred or ill will against or towards individuals or groups of people because of:

o Gender, colour, race, nationality (Including citizenship) or ethnic or natural origin

o Membership, or presumed membership, of a religious group or of a social or cultural group with perceived religious affiliation o Sexual orientation

    o Transgender identity

o Disability Using threatening, abusive or insulting words or conduct Displaying writing or any other thing which is threatening abusive or insulting”.

A detailed description is then set out of unacceptable conduct. It says that any person engaging in unacceptable conduct may be subject to any, or a combination of the following:

    o Removal from the stadium

o Suspension from official matches involving Celtic FC

o Indefinite ban from attending official matches involving Celtic FC

o Report to the police and possible criminal proceedings.

These are not just words. It is widely acknowledged that Celtic FC has been at the forefront of the campaign to stamp out racism, sectarianism and other forms of prejudice in football. Substantial investment has been made by the club into this campaign and numerous ‘so called’ Celtic fans have been banned from Celtic Park for breaching the rules. Chris Lowry ignores the tradition of Celtic FC and what it stands for and the passion the fans have for Scottish football when he questions the point of Scottish Football I quote from the social mission statement of the Club as follows; “Celtic Football Club is for people who want to support a football club that strives for excellence in Scotland and in Europe, is proud of its history, supportive of its local community and seeks to support the following aims: “To maximise all opportunities to disassociate the Club from sectarianism and bigotry of any kind. To promote Celtic as a Club for all people, regardless of gender, age, religion, race or ability”

Mr Lowry’s article is not based on fact. Therefore, any response from you to the effect that “this is ‘fair comment”‘ simply will not stand up. I am calling on you to retract this opinion piece without delay and to issue an apology to both clubs. In the absence of a suitable apology, I will be recommending that Celtic FC make a formal complaint based on incitement to hatred.
