Alan Thompson, scourge of the Rangers

438

If you’ve been on Celtic Quick News since the beginning you’ll know how high a regard I hold Alan Thompson.  In 2004 I called him the most influential Celtic midfielder since the Lisbon Lions.  His goal won us our first Champions League points, he scored the only goal of our two-legged Uefa Cup tie against Barcelona in 2004, he has scored two thirds of our competitive goals on German soil and his deliveries for Larsson, Hartson and Sutton were legendary.  His free kicks and corners always threatened.

He also punished Rangers more than any other midfield player in the last 40 years, scoring seven goals against them.

We have had many more skilful midfielders, but no one since the Lions came closed to making the impact of Alan Thompson in the games it really mattered.

We wish him well.

Yes because we all know what a fantastic record the media have when it comes to reporting Celtic stories. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a negative one nor a fabrication ever.

We should all take a step back and wait until we hear from those involved. Speculation on what happened, who is right, who is wrong is neither helpful nor necessary at this stage.

  13. Wow – 35 points schwiiiiiiing!!!! (Inc RFCIA added tax) (Can I use tax in the same sentence as RFCIA?)

But I can’t help thinking what would have happened had an administrator been allowed to put his signature to a document allowing Rangers to sign Daniel Cousin.

But I’m just being silly – an administrator’s first action in his administration of a football club wouldn’t be to increase their weekly/monthly outlay which would in turn hurt any current creditors. I mean that wouldn’t happen would it? Nah, I’m just talking crazy again.

35 points – gosh we were lucky eh?

How can you ‘refuse’ to take a bank holiday when your place of employment is closed and locked?!

Simple. Thats what happens at all my places of employment. I should add that I am a burglar to trade.

A standout player for Bolton before falling out with Villa, Alan Thompson was yet another of Martin O’Neill’s great signings. Banned from Europe in his first season due to some obscure UEFA rule, thereafter a major player for us. Brought with him a mental and physical toughness that will be missed at Celtic. More than anyone else at Parkhead Alan Thompson stood strong alongside Lenny so for him to be sacked over the phone, (as Celtic seem to have confirmed) is nothing short of incredible. No doubt there will be some logic to it but for the love of me I cannot see it. Not against Celtic bringing in another coach, needs must, but I personally would have added another coach, not lost one. Not a great day to be honest. Still, got to look n the bright side, it’s gonna be pouring rain tomorrow!

  18. Hector can raise an injunction to prevent Ibrox and Murray Park being sold to the Newco for £5 million on three grounds: (1) It has been proved that none of Whyte’s own money went into the purchase of RFC. The argument which flows from this is that he cannot have any rights “in the goods” from a Scots Law standpoint, meaning they should have stayed in the Oldco. (2) The Phoenix principle via which any action to move assets between entities so as to deliberately deprive creditors of what they are owed is not allowed, in fact its also gives rise to criminal proceedings for fraud. (3) By allowing this the administrators are failing in their statutory duty to do their best for the creditors. The net valuation is a clear fiddle. The redeployment value was established at £20 million in late February.
