Alan Thompson, scourge of the Rangers

438

If you’ve been on Celtic Quick News since the beginning you’ll know how high a regard I hold Alan Thompson.  In 2004 I called him the most influential Celtic midfielder since the Lisbon Lions.  His goal won us our first Champions League points, he scored the only goal of our two-legged Uefa Cup tie against Barcelona in 2004, he has scored two thirds of our competitive goals on German soil and his deliveries for Larsson, Hartson and Sutton were legendary.  His free kicks and corners always threatened.

He also punished Rangers more than any other midfield player in the last 40 years, scoring seven goals against them.

We have had many more skilful midfielders, but no one since the Lions came closed to making the impact of Alan Thompson in the games it really mattered.

We wish him well.

They want strikers who don’t miss sitters.

Don’t think I have ever seen one of these mythical creatures.

I know, even Coisty and Tony Cascarino missed the occasional coosarsebanjo

  2. I will miss Alan Thompson.

Just seeing him their in the dug-out was always a reminder of, some of the best days in my Celtic supporting life.

I will now reveal that….I only came on here today to, provide a decoy for the huns next move. I won’t say any more than that just now.

May God Bless Paul 67 and ‘Every’ CQNer.

    Hail Hail.

  3. 67Heaven ... I am Neil Lennon..!!..Truth and Justice will always prevail on

Kev Jungle……you seem to be on roll……hope it’s a steep hill, with a small wall at the end of it, to assist you in engaging your brain……..haven’t read back, but

We were shafted for 3 years, to allow the orcs CL money to get them out of the shoite…..didn’t work, though……..LOL

THE GB HAVE RENEWED………Just didn’t find it’s way into the LL, whereby their hesitation did

For every negative poster, there are hundreds of real Celtic SUPPORTERS

  4. Best wishes to Alan Thompson wherever he goes next, thanks for all the great goals & assists. Better to remember him going out as a winner having helped regain the league title as a coach. Hope the matter is settled amicably without dragging both the club & Thomo himself through the press….both deserve better.

    Genuinely surprised at this news.

No idea what has happened – like virtually everyone else. But good luck to Tommo – I’ve always liked the guy.

I hope that turns out to be the case.

Tactics is the one area I find myself being critical of Lenny.

The way I see it is its not his fault – his entire diet of football during his career was the 442 / 352 rigid formations which are now by in large redundant anywhere outside the british isles.

If he does look to bring in a foreign coach then my opinion of the man would be maxed out – acknowledging you dont have all the answers is the the mark of those who are on the pathway to greatness.

  7. Garden work finito for the day, sunbathing in the garden with a cold yin….. Life eh….. Such a good time to be a Celt.

For me Ledley is a modern Centre mid.

He has excellent long range passing ability, very rarely gives the ball away which is crucial in his position.

He has intelligence in the position as well; back post runs, arriving in the box late, putting the boot in. He understands the game.

Is also very versatile, plays deep, pushes on, out left, fills in at LB (even tho he shouldn’t)

And this year he was a hunskelper.

    Nuff said.

Apparently he never missed a sitter tho. Sign that man!

Sorry to see Thommo go. His highlight reel is up there with the best of them and I hope it is resolved amicably.

With that said, a space now opens up on the coaching team.

Steve Clarke has just left Liverpool. He been round a host of top clubs and is regarded as one of the top coaches in the game. With his experience he could double up as the mentor that Lenny never had

  11. The GB renewed at about the same time as last season, the reason for lateness was they ST’s were under threat from the club, these issues have largely gone away and as the season progressed, the 111 section seen some rough, aggressive tactics from the …. Ahem police force, thankfully this seems also to be resolved……

Onwards n upwards, next season as last the whole Celtic support will join with 111 in a celebration of Celtic, past, present and the future…. Which as ye all know is Green and White!

  12. Thanks Thommo – your name will always be linked with Celtic success, with your place in our history assured.

    Roy Croppie – 12:59

Thanks for the excellent memories……loved the knock knockin at the very end to Fernando….all that was missing was the actual (very hard) slap that Thommo had just administered to his face a few seconds before…..

Was in the Celtic Club for a wet one yesterday. Nice wee club. I think abt 6 punters in all day tho!!

Just catching up and saw your comments about the GB not renewing their season tickets. When Mort, and others, pointed out that they have in fact declared their intention to renew, you apologised saying that you must have missed this.

You’re a liar. I posted the statement last week and you then commented that you were disappointed as you thought the GB had ‘baws’. We then discussed it over 4 or 5 posts.

If you keep telling lies eventually you’ll trip yourself up.

  15. Steve Clarke was my first thought when I realised we’d need another coach, he has a wealth of experience, is well respected in football and our young management team could do with another Celt on side.

McDowall….. Why dont we bring back the petite merde judice.

How many Bhoys on here refused the bank holidays in protest to Lizzie’s anniversary? No holiday in India for me.

  17. Kev “MediaHouse” Jungle. Ignore chaps. Let’s not be beastly to the hun. No use in speculation over Thommo. It will all come out eventually. Just a pity that the lawyers need to be involved.

  18. never mind willie mcstay what about paul mcstay.

bring him back from australia and give him a good contract…he knows what its all about to conduct yourself as a footballer at celtic park…infact i have never forgiven martin oneil for not giving him a job on the coaching staff 10 years ago..i cant remember who he picked instead..was it that traitor ‘kenny mcdowel’?

  21. How can you ‘refuse’ to take a bank holiday when your place of employment is closed and locked?!

Another one with a strange agenda.

  22. Hunskelpin’…a profession from which there is no retirement, never redundant, always rewarding,a joy to watch & a pleasure to impart.

  23. Best of luck for the future Alan, no idea what went wrong but thanks for the memories Hunskelper! My favourite AT goal was the toe poke at Celtic Park in MON,s first season to win game 1-0 and confirm us as the new force in Scotland.

    Who care’s man!

CQN and the official website are where I get my football news.

Thanks to them both and everyone who contributes to this site.

    The best bar none!

    ——

Completely agree with CQN’s great work and it will always be my first port of call for my football/celtic (same thing for me to be honest) news. However, what the rags print does concern me as with regards to the wider Scottish population they have a far greater readership and therefore contribute more to the general public opinion. As we well know the rags love twisting every little story involving, or sometimes not even involving, our manager into a negative. Whilst not directly responsible for the appalling treatment Neil has received over the last decade the papers have definitely helped create the ‘he brings it on himself’ mentality which exists amongst most scottish football fans outside parkhead. Again today the sun and records main angle seems to be; Neil Lennon sacks friend who helped him through his darkest hours over the phone. It’s pathetic, irresponsible and in my view dangerous. In this sense i really do care what the rags print. Its even more upsetting when you consider that Neil is in fact a well spoken, intelligent and genuinely all round nice guy. Was actually refreshing to hear him talk to Gray and Keys, i know they have there faults, on talksport a few weeks back and to realise that down south they aren’t so hostile towards neil.

Just wanna congratulate paul on his piece on the new media the other night. Caught the link on here. Came across very well. Good to see the MSM might, like the huns, die within my generation!!! exciting time
