Alan Thompson, scourge of the Rangers

438

If you’ve been on Celtic Quick News since the beginning you’ll know how high a regard I hold Alan Thompson.  In 2004 I called him the most influential Celtic midfielder since the Lisbon Lions.  His goal won us our first Champions League points, he scored the only goal of our two-legged Uefa Cup tie against Barcelona in 2004, he has scored two thirds of our competitive goals on German soil and his deliveries for Larsson, Hartson and Sutton were legendary.  His free kicks and corners always threatened.

He also punished Rangers more than any other midfield player in the last 40 years, scoring seven goals against them.

We have had many more skilful midfielders, but no one since the Lions came closed to making the impact of Alan Thompson in the games it really mattered.

We wish him well.

Fair play sir for sticking to you’re principals, I don’t mind Lizzie at all and indeed felt it was only right to partake in Lizzie’s day along with my neighbours and work colleagues, each to his own I say…. We are all inclusive after all.

for me one of Thommos best characteristics is that he was a “winner” a competitor, someone who didnt believe in hoodoos or jinxes

there were a few other like him in that side

i will never forget his time at CP

And setting about that criminal thug at Tynecastle.

Little did I know whilst sitting in a bar in St Andrews reading about your signing by MON that you would be such a joyful influence in my life.

    Thanks Alan

  17. Get Big Vic signed up on a long term contract. His influence turned the season around for me and being so young he has a huge future and can play at any level. There is money to be made here Celtic but hopefully not just yet.

  18. Afternoon all .

Fairly appalled to discover one oft neighbours has Union Jacks all over their balcony. There goes the neighbourhood.

Sad to hear about the departure of Alan Thompson. Smashing player between 2002 and 2004 who was one of the most effective midfield players we have had – not always silky and prone to some rash moments but mostly he got the job done. I have no idea why he left and can only wish him all the best.

Saw the front of today’s Herald ( a former newspaper )in which there is a headline ‘Green warns the SFA on Rangers ban’. What next ‘Mouse threatens Cat on rodent danger’?

  25. Ocht in all this financial skullduggery and amongst the misty morass that is the SFA’s Love/Love relationship with the ‘Mighty’ Glasgow Rangers…

… I’ve clean forgotten what Neil Lennon’s Glasgow Celtic’s point turnaround total was. A turnaround which saw his team comfortably win this year’s league with administration points to spare.

Could anyone remind what that points turnaround total was?

I’d be mighty grateful if somebody could.
