Alcohol, if you’re rich enough

953

As you and I know, alcohol is sold at football games.  If you are in a corporate seat, you can drink before kick-off, at halftime and again at fulltime.  Prohibition only applies to the cheap seats.

Alcohol-related issues remain a problem in towns across Scotland in the hours after big games, but suggestions by First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, that there is a potential correlation between those drinking from cheap seats at games and violence (including the domestic kind) are simply unfounded.  People are free to get tanked up before and after games, the wealthy can do so during games, and millions can do so in pubs and at home while watching games on TV.

I have some concerns about reintroducing alcohol for the rest of us.  Alcohol requires appropriate infrastructure and ambiance – like there is at the Kerrydale Suite, for example.  The North Stand Upper, where I sit, does not have the space, supervision capabilities, or even the toilets to become an appropriate venue to encourage the consumption of any more fluids.  In the 20 years it’s been up, it’s never had enough paper towels to make it to halftime, and may God go with you, if you need to spend a longer visit, but don’t let that be a reason to stop the rest of you.

Modern football stadiums have many safe areas where alcohol can be consumed.  Those who cannot handle their drink, would find themselves supervised to within an inch of a football banning order. Scotland needs to learn what a healthy attitude to alcohol looks like – check out the Kerrydale Suite for a glimpse.

Build the lounges, toilets, and grills.  Put carpet down, dress stewards in black ties, have them welcome fans as “Sir” or “Madam”, treat football fans like responsible adults.  It works in the hospitality areas and in the Kerrydale Suite, it’ll work from Palmerston to Peterhead.

Thank you for the tremendous response yesterday to the line-up for the CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner.  We have (St) Packy Bonnar, Tommy Coyne and Joe Miller for a Q&A, an unmissable address on Jock Stein by Archie Macpherson, and Celtic’s First Lady of Song, Patricia Ferns, for those of you who enjoy a song or dance.  Let me know if you’re still looking for tickets,
celticquicknews@gmail.com

And Celtic, how hard can it be to put enough paper towels in the toilets? I love the family approach the club has now, but bringing kids means dealing with the toilets, and that’s never a highlight of the trip.

Keep your eye on CQN Magazine site, as we’re changing how the magazine content is delivered.

Just 1 Ticket needed for the Inter Game Please!!!!

    Hi Fellow Celtic Fans,

As my Father is not very well I find myself now travelling up to Glasgow from Hampshire on Wednesday evening and staying until Sunday. I know this is a very long shot indeed, but if there is any kind CQN soul out there who has access to a spare ticket (I know, I know, don’t laugh!) for the Inter match I would dearly Love to take in the game if at all possible. If anyone by some CQN miracle does have a spare ticket, could they please contact me at jim at xanzada dot com. Thanks in advance! :-)

Thanks Skin. Hope you enjoyed the Belfast embassy regal. Love now being able to put faces to blog names. We truly are a special club. I was saying to HT, Vp, Gordy and Roy C the hospitality that I received in Scotland was unbelievable. I stayed in Ferguslie in Paisley and the free Republic of Coatbridge. So I was delighted ,along with the rest of the Irish brigade, to be able in some very small way to be able to return the compliment. Sorry you or Petec couldn’t make the unabridged taxi tour.hh

  7. Muppet in the Daily Record this morning says clubs will not be punished for ‘old firm’ sectarian shame. Mentions use of the word ‘Hun’ but no details of singing of the Famine, Pope and Fenian blood from that lot. Absolute disgrace.

Just for the record I don’t buy that rag, it was lying in a staff room at work.

The ole Northstand upper gets well steep towards the top where you sit and if you trip on the way out you could easily make the Northstand lower in unfortunate circumstances before a drink.

  9. “…Scotland needs to learn what a healthy attitude to alcohol looks like – check out the Kerrydale Suite for a glimpse.”

ok, i will check it out on thursday then

oh hang on, i cant, its been handed over to the fat cats for the night. (looks for angry smiley on keyboard)

Personally i dont think selling alcohol to the likes of me during the game will be a good idea.

If i drink my usual bottle of mad dog, 4 pints and 3 double voddies and coke before the game, then go to the pub after it for 3 hours of voddie and cokes chased down with a few aftershocks and jagermeisters, then i can generally wake up in the morning in my own bed

im worried an extra pint or 2 during the game might push me over the edge ;-)

  10. Alcohol at games? Not sure this is needed.

Folks would be up and down getting beer, going to the toilets. Everyone else in the row would be up and down with them.

And we can’t go without a beer for 2 hours?

At stadium prices, it would be another outlet for people to moan about getting ‘ripped off’.

Honestly, Paul, I don’t see the upside of this. Better to focus on, and keep pushing for Safe Standing.

    Just my 20 bucks worth…..:)

  11. Bada,

Possibly. Especially if you have clicked one link too far.

Some of these phishing emails are frighteningly good. As I said before, always click on details of sender first.

Avast is a good freebie or kaspersky if yer feeling flush ;)

  12. Ps. There is not a chance in hell that alcohol will be sold in grounds in Scotland. Scotland has a very unhealthy relationship with alcohol and as such the governments agenda will be to discourage consumption with things like the drink drive limit changes. This is all part of a bigger plan to tackle the problem.

I am old enough to remember the so called good old days when drinking was allowed at football matches I remember how on a cold winter day the back of your legs got warm when some cretin behind you peed down the back of your legs.I have seem the terraces running like a river and the smell that went with it I can remember when the drink recepticals were empty and they got launched as the drunks couldnt be bothered to take them to a bin or carry them until they were outside the ground. I can also remember many more fights starting between fellow fans than there appears to be now.I must agree with Paul 67 on unless you have the facilities in place that alcohol should not be allowed to be freely available at football matches I am not anti drink I like a couple of beers and a few whiskies now and then but for me there is a place and a time. H.H.

    reintroduce ?

I cannot recall when it was ever possible to buy alcohol inside football stadia in Scotland, well, certainly in the cheapest/terraces.

  16. I love a drink but not fussed for it during the game.

In fact, most weekends I enjoy the 105 minutes without one. Does me the world of good :))

  17. One other point about the stewards. I am sick of being searched at every away ground by some jobsworth. The stewards have no right to search anyone, only the police can search you.

This alcohol thing is not as big as some folks are making out. I think people are wrongly comparing the idea to what it used to be like before 1980: Folk getting tanked up on their own carry out on the terraces throughout the game. That’s never going to happen.

The basic difference to what is available now, is that you would be able to queue up for a reduced-alcohol pint at half time. You may be able to do so before or after the game too but you can already drink anywhere outside the ground before and after the game, or in the Kerrydale suite.

Currently if I leave my seat on the half time whistle, I can almost-justabout-mibbeez get to the front of the queue before the second half starts – and that’s just to buy coffee.

Offering pints at half time won’t shorten the queues any, nor would I expect it to cause a spike in disorderly behaviour either. I don’t see any reason not to introduce it but it won’t change my matchday experience any. More paper towels might though :-)

  21. ‘and may God go with you, if you need to spend a longer visit’ – Best quote I have ever read. Call me immature but I am actually sore laughing at that.

  22. Do the same as they do in fatcat areas. Sell alcohol in the concourse prior to kick off and for a defined time following the final whistle. Sell in plastic holder and prohibit bringing it up to the seating deck.

Works fine in such salubrious areas as Newcastle, Sunderland where I have enjoyed such refreshments in EPL games.

  23. Limit the alcohol content in the beer to below 4.5% and nobody gets stupid drunk, because it’s impossible. That’s what the Scandi’s do. Also, just ban from the stadium pubs anyone who turns up drunk and make an arse of themselves.

  24. personally i think you should only be allowed to buy a drink at the game if you are already half drunk

it would stave off the drooft setting in before the end of the game until you get back to the pub and so is actually for health benefits

so you should be breathalyzed, and if you are more then 3 times over the drink/drive limit for example, then you are entitled to buy a pint to keep you lubricated

sober fans have no such health needs for a pint so can stick to rancid salty bovril

I have sat in the same seat since they built The NORTH stand.

I got one recently from HMRC asking me where to deposit my tax rebate. Honestly looked the part, every document was perfect.

  27. Go to the pub before and/or after if you want to drink. Just watch the football for 90 minutes…it’s not hard. Personally I’d ban food too. People moving around etc etc …hate it.

    Just watch the damn football.
