Alcohol, poor facilities and dignity at Ibrox

1766

I’m a bit confused at the chat this morning of reintroducing the sale of alcohol at football games.  Alcohol is available for sale at games at Celtic Park, you just need to have a ticket for an expensive enough seat.  If you’re in the cheap seats, you get to queue to pay for some cola.  Is people’s ability to pay an indication of their likelihood to behave in a dangerous or criminal way with some alcohol in their blood?

This implication has always troubled me.

Alcohol, wherever it is sold, inevitably leads to over-indulgence and potentially dangerous behaviour, and requires strong stewarding, whether that is at a night club, or in the No. 7 restaurant.  Scotland’s licenced premises have changed beyond recognition in recent decades.  They are increasingly well-lit, family friendly and safe places to be.  They now sell better beer too, but our nation’s problem with alcohol remains acute.

Society needs to be educated on how to use alcohol responsibly; good venues are part of the solution.

While we are on the subject of facilities at Celtic Park…….  I go months without buying food or drink in the North Stand, Upper, for good reason.  Last week (pestered by one of the boys), I left for the kiosk with 40 minutes on the clock, didn’t get served until the second half started, only to be told there were no hotdogs or pies left.

You know me, I’m not one to get angry at Celtic, but the sheer frustration pushed me over the top, and I didn’t have a drink!  If you’re charging circa £4 for something that’s costing less than £1, make sure stock is sufficient.  Have two people serving each side of the kiosk, not two on one side, with a single person making hardly a dent on the queue at the other.

Needed to get that off my chest.

The ‘news’ this morning that Rangers International are trying to sack commercial director, Imran Ahmad, is more curious for being news than in itself.  Is it even possible for this news to be anything other than a leak from a director against another director?  These newspaper people don’t do irony, they just take careful notes and go write up their story.

This whole episode is beginning to feel a bit like sitting out the back when the neighbours don’t realise their bedroom window is open.  You can hear the noises and you looked up and caught a glance at something horrific looking.  It’s something you’ll laugh about later with your friends but these people really need to acquire some dignity.

Power hungy, red-tape shower of bollocks – why not just reverse all trains on the line by 10-mins and 5 miles, to collect us late-comers. Selfish bollocks. >:(( When you think about that, you’ll understand my anger, exemplified in the video below. Well I have to be angry at summit – the rozzers were a bit too tax-payer-friendly for my liking.

Personally, I put the blame on the Tory Govt, the DD side of the Celtic Board, North Lanarkshire council workers, and Network Rail.

    A Sense of Shame

I have lived most of my life in and around Glasgow , I am not Glaswegian by birth having been born just outside in Cambuslang , but I consider myself to be Glaswegian . The city has several claims to fame , some good , some not so good . The razor gangs of the 40’s and fifties were long gone and the housing scheme gangs of the sixtes had all but disappeared in my childhood years . The rivalry between Rangers and Celtic did however still exist and huge drink filled crowds caught up in the tribalism that football brings often had characters that went too far . I remember carrying in 24 cans of Wellparks finest to a cup final at Hampden against our city rivals , not an uncommon site back in the day , to “ quench the thirst of my friends and I as because the Rangers ends became a dustbowl after we scored “ . It wasn’t all sweetness and light and I remember the pitch invasion and mounted police hitting everything above the grass after the 1980 Scottish Cup Final . Trouble which led to the ban on alcohol that is still in place today . After the match my friends and I met up with some misbegotten friends who were supporting the “ wrong “ team and we all went home together in the same van slagging each other relentlessly but peacefully . Not a footballing or social utopia but in general everyone carried on without letting the rivalry run our lives .

Things have changed now though , and not for the better .I still have several friends who support Celtic , and by that I mean they actually go to the games . In days gone past it was possible to have conversations about football in general and the old firm in particular and if someone was getting a bit to vociferous in their comments someone would pipe up “ Hoi , mixed company “ and peace would ensue as the offender would rain back . These days are gone and a new bitterness has taken their place . So much so that all talk of football , religion and even politics is banned on the odd occasions we meet up . Its really sad and we all agree that we used to enjoy the banter and some excellent patter flying back and forward . Now even if we are not offended by our conversation the chances are someone else nearby make be . Its very disappointing to think that at one time we could sit in the same van singing songs at each other , mostly at the same time , that would get us a criminal record now, but we can’t even have a discussion in a pub about it now .

As I said at the start I class myself as a Glaswegian and while others may disagree I feel our best qualities are our sense of humor and willingness not to back away from a fight if we think we are in the right . I am proud to say I am from Glasgow and in my frequent trips to deepest England I find myself steadfastly defending my ‘ native city ’. I can always manage to counter criticisms of Glasgow by expounding some of its many virtues and trying to dispel the false impressions people have of our ‘ dear green place ‘ . This just makes me all the more sad and ashamed at the news I read on twitter and a couple of days later in the papers, *no change there then* . It seems the guys from @FoundersTrail a group of Rangers historians had been refused their application to put a stall up at the @GibsonStGala because the gala committee had received 4 complaints accusing the founders trail of being bigots . The Founders Trail has never had any bigoted actions or comments ever attributed to them . They are fans who are historians who run tours showing Rangers history and who have stalls at event such as Gibson St Gala perviously raising money for Yorkhill Hospital and the Rangers Supporters Erskine Appeal . The committee at first stated they had refused on the grounds that the founders trail were a bigoted organization following anonymous complaints . Then after several complaints from Rangers fans and appeals to the media they retracted this spurious claim and stated

“ the Founders Trail just didn’t fit in “ and that We have never had any complaints about any other stalls before , so it stands out . This is not a slight on this organization . We just felt it wasn’t fitting with our event “

This despite the fact that the Founders Trail had perviously had a stall with no problems whatsoever at the event. The fact that Peter McNeil one of the founders of our club lived on Gibson St would have been a link I’d have thought the Gibson St Gala would have wanted to highlight but it seems not . The city of Glasgow has become so divided that the committee felt it dare not even allow a historic society collecting for local charities be present in case it was seen to be taking sides Pragmatic some may say , while others say cowardly for allowing real bigots to cast aspersions on genuine football fans looking to raise the profile of the cities famous club and put money into good causes at the same time. I understand the committees reasons for this , I disagree with them however and would have demanded the accusers validate their accusations in public before bowing to their bigoted hatred . I cannot can find an excuse or justification for the actions of these warped and vile people . They not only shame themselves but have no regard for the charities that stood to loose financially from their hatred.

I am ashamed to say I live in a city and society where people like this are not only not shunned but are encouraged and applauded in their disgusting behavior by others .Let Glasgow Flourish, if this is what it has become then its better left to wither and die .

On a brighter note and an update to the original post. Rangers fans, being the amazing people that we know from previous exploits, have again dug deep in theeir pockets and have donated over £1200 and this will go to Yorkhill Hospital and Erskine, two charities who are always crying out for donations

THE CULL of the Rangers board continued yesterday when Imran Ahmad, the club’s commercial director, left his position.

His exit came just a day after a report linked with him posting messages on a fans’ forum that were critical of Ally McCoist and Walter Smith. Rangers confirmed that Ahmad has gone and said that they would not be making any further comment on his departure.

McCoist said that the first he’d heard of Ahmad leaving the club was when he was told the news by journalists in the minutes after Rangers’ 4-2 victory over East Stirling. The manager would not be drawn on the development but it is believed that he will shed no tears for Ahmad or his main ally, Charles Green, who exited ten days ago.

Ahmad and Green were last week reported to the Serious Fraud Office in relation to their takeover of Rangers last summer, a company close to disgraced former owner, Craig Whyte, The Worthington Group, making the allegations. Ahmad and Green are also the subject of an independent commission set up to determine what links they had with Whyte. It is believed that Green intends to sell his shareholding to James Easdale, the owner of McGill’s Buses, and his brother, Sandy, who was convicted of fraud in 1997. They already own about

8 per cent of Rangers with Green’s shares possibly giving them another 8.6 per cent. Reports last night said that the Easdales could move sharply to buy Green’s and Ahmad’s shares, although it is not yet clear whether Ahmad intends to sell anytime soon. The suggestion is that the Easdales are looking to buy up to 29 per cent of the shares in Rangers with a view to taking control of the club.

When informed of Ahmad’s departure, McCoist said he wouldn’t comment until the commission (headed by Deloitte and legal firm Pinsent Masons) had finished its work. Asked if the club needs a Jim McColl-type figure to invest in whatever shares become available, McCoist agreed. “It would be unfair of me to stick Jim right in it to be honest, but he’s certainly a fine man, a very fine man. That would be a decision for Jim or anybody else. The most important thing is that the fans need somebody to come in who they can relate to and who will agree with their vision in taking the club forward.”

At Ochilview Park yesterday, the visiting support held up a banner before kick-off that said “We want our club back”. McCoist agreed with the sentiment. “The fans are right,” he said. “If anybody deserves the club back it’s the fans. We’ve already talked about how phenomenal the support has been this season, just when we’ve needed them most. It’s their club. And when one or two individuals start thinking about themselves, it’s not [acceptable], far from it. The club belongs to thousands and thousands of supporters and we need to get our club back.”

At the heart of the club yesterday there was undisguised relief that Ahmad had left as they saw him as a divisive character who was closely aligned with Green.

McFadden the creative spark so many looking for?

    By Andrew Smith

    Published on 28/04/2013 00:00

CELTIC manager Neil Lennon has refused to rule out a summer move for James McFadden. The 49-times capped Scotland internationalist will line up against the champions for Motherwell today as he continues a re-emergence that began when he signed a short-term deal to return him to his first senior club in February.

Following an injury-blighted three years, the mercurial forward is now in his longest run of games since his time with Birmingham City and a good showing today could persuade Lennon to pursue an interest in a player he has previously admitted rating and to whom he made overtures two summers ago, before McFadden rejoined Everton. Asked about re-igniting this interest, Lennon offered: “I’m not going to talk about transfer targets [but] I wouldn’t rule it out, put it that way.

“We did make enquiries [two summers ago]. I did speak to him but we decided to go elsewhere,” Lennon said of the player who stated in an interview with The Scotsman that he would like to stay in Scotland for the sake of his family. “I don’t know if they would be happy to move down there again,” McFadden, pictured right, said. “They enjoy being back in Scotland. That’s the difficult thing, they are back here and they are settled. My two kids are at school now, loving it with their wee pals, so it wouldn’t be ideal to move them. But if needs must.”

Lennon has spoken about having four players earmarked for every position the club are seeking to fill, with first and second-choice targets potentially difficult to trap. McFadden could be a fall-back, with the Celtic manager admitting he wanted to add creativity to his squad and McFadden’s wage demands now unlikely to be beyond Celtic’s structure.

Celtic are already planning for next season with their games over the next fortnight to be contested by understrength teams as players are given one-week breaks to compensate for the fact that a mid-July first Champions League qualifier will allow them only a three-week summer break.

Kris Commons, Joe Ledley, Efe Ambrose and Kelvin Wilson have all been given leave this week with Gary Hooper, Emilio Izaguirre, Fraser Forster, Charlie Mulgrew and Georgios Samaras having a week off following the trip to Fir Park. Victor Wanyama and Beram Kayal, both suspended for the Scottish Cup final, will then have a ten-day break before the squad trains together ahead of their Hampden meeting against Hibernian.

“We will have all of [those who can play in the final] back for the build-up to the St Johnstone and Dundee United games,” said Lennon. “It took a bit of working out. I don’t think three weeks in the summer is long enough. We wanted to give ourselves enough time to prepare for the cup final and the two weeks training and preparation will be plenty. We feel it’s important otherwise these players are eventually going to suffer burn-out. Maybe looking at Barcelona in midweek it’s starting to take its toll on them. I’m not saying it’s the end of Barcelona by any means, but there are a few players there who look tired. ”

Meanwhile, Lennon will meet major shareholder Dermot Desmond next month to discuss his contract. The Celtic manager currently operates on a one-year rolling deal but is likely to push for improved terms.
