Alcohol, poor facilities and dignity at Ibrox

1766

I’m a bit confused at the chat this morning of reintroducing the sale of alcohol at football games.  Alcohol is available for sale at games at Celtic Park, you just need to have a ticket for an expensive enough seat.  If you’re in the cheap seats, you get to queue to pay for some cola.  Is people’s ability to pay an indication of their likelihood to behave in a dangerous or criminal way with some alcohol in their blood?

This implication has always troubled me.

Alcohol, wherever it is sold, inevitably leads to over-indulgence and potentially dangerous behaviour, and requires strong stewarding, whether that is at a night club, or in the No. 7 restaurant.  Scotland’s licenced premises have changed beyond recognition in recent decades.  They are increasingly well-lit, family friendly and safe places to be.  They now sell better beer too, but our nation’s problem with alcohol remains acute.

Society needs to be educated on how to use alcohol responsibly; good venues are part of the solution.

While we are on the subject of facilities at Celtic Park…….  I go months without buying food or drink in the North Stand, Upper, for good reason.  Last week (pestered by one of the boys), I left for the kiosk with 40 minutes on the clock, didn’t get served until the second half started, only to be told there were no hotdogs or pies left.

You know me, I’m not one to get angry at Celtic, but the sheer frustration pushed me over the top, and I didn’t have a drink!  If you’re charging circa £4 for something that’s costing less than £1, make sure stock is sufficient.  Have two people serving each side of the kiosk, not two on one side, with a single person making hardly a dent on the queue at the other.

Needed to get that off my chest.

The ‘news’ this morning that Rangers International are trying to sack commercial director, Imran Ahmad, is more curious for being news than in itself.  Is it even possible for this news to be anything other than a leak from a director against another director?  These newspaper people don’t do irony, they just take careful notes and go write up their story.

This whole episode is beginning to feel a bit like sitting out the back when the neighbours don’t realise their bedroom window is open.  You can hear the noises and you looked up and caught a glance at something horrific looking.  It’s something you’ll laugh about later with your friends but these people really need to acquire some dignity.

Good morning to all you bhoys (& ghirls) in green

Had a fine day yesterday meeting so many CQNers. A fine mix of old and new. Bailed out early as usual to get home and see the family and then fall asleep! Lightweight as always.

Looking forward to watching the game today and then onto the PoY awards tonight.

If you haven’t already read them I would recommend Harry McShane’s No Mean Fighter and Wal Hannington’s Unemployed Struggles 1919-1936.

  4. News ofe Jones’s death is indeed sad but whilst a great singer and talented he was a violent husband and Tammy Waynette famously didn’t Stand By Her Man!

Always loved Liz Locheads version which I believe goes something like”and if he tries to thump you, before he tries to hump you and snores while you’re hatching up a plan to up and leave the scunner, cause it is any wonner that you can’t bloody stand your man.”

Been enjoying a recently issued Johnny Paycheck compilation —— Nowhere to Run [ Omni].

A very good compilation of his choons for the excellent Little Darling label.

  6. Regarding Pablo- we got talking one night about Beatles books and I sourced him an out of print copy of one he had never read before, which I sent to his home in Clackmannanshire- he was out in Cork working at the time if I recall. He was so humbly grateful for this small act of friendship from an almost total stranger, but kindness was something he routinely gave to many many people.

He passed away not long after this, I never did get to meet him but like everyone else I lost something that day.

  7. Summa @ 4.08 Every now & then I read or hear an article or phrase that affects me profoundly. Your post at 4.08 provided me with one of those moments. Not sure if the words are originally yours or something you picked up yourself, it doesn’t really matter, it was an absolute gem. Its a concept and a phrase that this Tim is going to buy into big time. Thank you.

  11. Paul Murray has Tom English putting his slice of propaganda in the battle for core values at Sevco

Core values…………….Brown brouges, No surrender,……… you all know the rest

BTW Tom did you ask Paul if he ever discussed the problems in Govan with bomber Brown? i suppose that question was off limits

IN THE cast of characters in the recent history of Rangers, the unreliables have come to outweigh the upright with near Apocalyptic consequences. Paul Murray can be counted in the second category, a guy you could hang your hat on to do what is right for the club or, to put it another way, an endangered species in this brutal saga.

The former director has plenty to say about what is happening at Rangers. The damage caused by Craig Whyte, the desperate uncertainty created by Charles Green, the role of the administrators Duff and Phelps in allowing Green in the door in the first place and the changing fabric at Ibrox. Among other things, Murray suggests that when – or, perhaps, if – calm is restored in the club then a new constitution should be drawn up to make clear what Rangers ought to be about. Some of that has been lost along the way.

“Whoever is involved going forward has to look after the club’s interests first and their own interests second,” he says. “You are a custodian of the assets and you’re passing it through the generations. That’s your role. They should actually write a new constitution for Rangers which says that everybody who goes on the board has to agree to core values and if they don’t they can’t join. It sounds preposterous in some ways but I don’t think it’s a bad idea.

“All of these people arrive and talk about global brands. We’ve heard all this stuff before, for years and years and it’s not there. I’m a Rangers supporter and I’ll defend the club against anyone, but Rangers are not Manchester United, let’s be honest. It’s good to aspire to be, but we’re not. It’s a different financial landscape altogether. So all these guys who arrive and talk about global potential and brands…Get your feet back on the ground and look at the reality.

  12. Hoping to see a few youngsters get a chance today but doubt we will. Ambrose, Wilson, Commons & Ledley sent away on their holidays with Forster, Hooper, Samaras, Izaguirre & Mulgrew to go after todays game.

Thanks very much for that message. I hadn’t heard that, even though my family and his have been close for decades. God rest him. A very fine man, as you say.

  14. Kayal33, Did I read somewhere that Matthews is close to coming back, if he is ready I’d expect him to start. I’d certainly agree with you re playing Dylan, Rogic & Watt. Surely this is the time to give them the chance to establish thenselves as first team players.

BBC website match preview has Matthews as still out injured along with Brown & Lassad.

  16. If the U20s complete the league and cup double for 4th successive year on Wednesday night, they should be rewarded by playing the whole team against Ross County next Sunday. We can then bring back a rested first team squad for league trophy party v St J and final game at Tannadice as part of build up to Cup Final.

  17. Kayal33

A lot of untried stuff in your preferred line-up.

Mcgeouch’s never played as a no.10 in the first team – did he play there in the U20’s?

Interesting CB duo – Lustig and Mulgrew play pretty well at Fir Park. Think they’ve played once before at CB together, and did ok.

However, I just can’t see what the fuss is over Forrest. Given ample opportunity, he seldom delivers the kind of performance you’d expect from a player Lenny values so highly.

After Matthews, Rogic is the last player I’d want see start at Fir Park – not enough evidence, admittedly, but so far so bad.

Kayal/Wanyama isn’t great – both destroyers so there would be a lack of creativity from middle of park.

It’s good to talk about the football.

  18. No word in the chip wrappers about Celtic being disrespectful to the other SPL teams by playing a weakened side today?

I’m sure Snyde can manufacture a negative spin for “discussion” tomorrow evening.

Never been impressed with Mcgeouch but we’ve never seen him play through the middle. Always stuck out on the wing, should be given a chance through the middle. Him & Watt played together through the middle in youths last season, why not give it a bash today.

Rogic had a poor game last time at Fir Park, let’s see if he’s learned from that.

Forrest needs games in this injury hit season. The main thing lacking in Celtic is pace going forward, only when Forrest plays do we have that.

A nothing game where we can experiment and rest the players who have carried us through the season.

  20. up over goal, I agree Rogic has yet to prove himself but surely that is what these games should be about, I’d play Rogic & Dylan alongside Victor & Kayal in a 4 man midfield, My team:

    F.F

    Lustig Rogne Mulgrew Izzy

    Dylan Victor Kayal Rogic

    Watt & Stokes

  21. I love how Paul Murray is being portrayed as a great Rangers man and some sort of saint. However, wasn’t he on the board of oldco as it was run into the ground leading to it being flogged to a spiv for a pound?

Get him back in now is what I say.

Oh and weren’t Walter and Ally there before too? King as well?

    Yeah, get ’em all back.

And a genuine apology to MWD for the last-minute independence discussion after I had previously done so well, eejit that I am….

Time to inspect the damage,I suppose!!!!

  24. Kayal33

Rogic had a poor game last time at Fir Park, let’s see if he’s learned from that.

Orrrrr we could give a starting berth to someone who plays consistently well at Fir Park and has lit up those games on more than one occasion, i.e. Paddy McCourt.

re. Forrest – there’s no point having pace if you don’t do something at the end of it, and Forrest typifies that (unlike, say, Samaras, who has pace to burn but won’t usually lump the ball in like an underpaid postman). I’d rather see players wait patiently for an opening. Pinpoint passing and skilful dribbling can cut through a defence just as well as a guy who runs fast.
