Alcohol, poor facilities and dignity at Ibrox

1766

I’m a bit confused at the chat this morning of reintroducing the sale of alcohol at football games.  Alcohol is available for sale at games at Celtic Park, you just need to have a ticket for an expensive enough seat.  If you’re in the cheap seats, you get to queue to pay for some cola.  Is people’s ability to pay an indication of their likelihood to behave in a dangerous or criminal way with some alcohol in their blood?

This implication has always troubled me.

Alcohol, wherever it is sold, inevitably leads to over-indulgence and potentially dangerous behaviour, and requires strong stewarding, whether that is at a night club, or in the No. 7 restaurant.  Scotland’s licenced premises have changed beyond recognition in recent decades.  They are increasingly well-lit, family friendly and safe places to be.  They now sell better beer too, but our nation’s problem with alcohol remains acute.

Society needs to be educated on how to use alcohol responsibly; good venues are part of the solution.

While we are on the subject of facilities at Celtic Park…….  I go months without buying food or drink in the North Stand, Upper, for good reason.  Last week (pestered by one of the boys), I left for the kiosk with 40 minutes on the clock, didn’t get served until the second half started, only to be told there were no hotdogs or pies left.

You know me, I’m not one to get angry at Celtic, but the sheer frustration pushed me over the top, and I didn’t have a drink!  If you’re charging circa £4 for something that’s costing less than £1, make sure stock is sufficient.  Have two people serving each side of the kiosk, not two on one side, with a single person making hardly a dent on the queue at the other.

Needed to get that off my chest.

The ‘news’ this morning that Rangers International are trying to sack commercial director, Imran Ahmad, is more curious for being news than in itself.  Is it even possible for this news to be anything other than a leak from a director against another director?  These newspaper people don’t do irony, they just take careful notes and go write up their story.

This whole episode is beginning to feel a bit like sitting out the back when the neighbours don’t realise their bedroom window is open.  You can hear the noises and you looked up and caught a glance at something horrific looking.  It’s something you’ll laugh about later with your friends but these people really need to acquire some dignity.

There are games I’d like to see him in and others I wouldn’t have him within a million miles of.

I’m usually out of kilter with Celtic fans – I’d have had Sammi as POTY for last season. Now that many want him voted POTY, I’d give my vote to Hooper. How quickly people forget the early/middle part of the season.

Most of our players tend to underperform against Motherwell away – Paddy is an exception.

I couldn’t get past the opening paragraph of English’s piece on Paul Murray.

Not so long ago I would have stuck with it for a laugh, but the lies are becoming tiresome now. English simply has no professional pride.

Describing someone who was a member of the board that sent Rangers hurtling towards liquidation as “a guy you could hang your hat on to do what is right for the club” really is piss-poor churnalism.

English should be embarrassed by that – but he probably thinks that is good work.

  8. Having had the opportunity to watch a player over 4 seasons , I have never up until now been undecided about him after such a long period.

    I am undecided about him.

    He has been brilliant .

    He has been ineffective.

    He had been over eulogised.

He has been over criticised .

I do not believe that he has been given a long enough extended run in the team for me to judge him.

    Managers need to win games.

Neil Lennon has had to win matches .

This season the need to be as consistent in the league has reduced.

Yet Lenny has not trusted Paddy.

I will put my trust in Lenny, but I would have loved to have seen more if Paddy this season.

Paddy has done well at Fir Park, he won us the game the day we went there 15 points behind a former club.

And yes, many have under performed there.

However one of our better performances there was the 2-0 win earlier in the season when Forrest played very well in a front three with Hooper & Commons (his general play not his finishing which was awful). All I was thinking was similar set up only use Watt & McGeouch for Hooper & Watt, and Kayal & Rogic either side of Wanyama instead of Brown & Mulgrew. See what they can do, see how it compares to one of our better performances.

‘The Imran Ahmad story as per the darkside blogs is that he was posting from a Club IP and that is how he was rumbled. However the username he was posting under was set up in Oct/Nov 2011 which precedes Greens arrival ????’

    There’s three possibilities here

    1. Ahmad wasn’t the poster.

    2. Ahmad was the poster and there was a plan in place since October 2011 that would involve Ahmad being at Ipox and wanting to post on a hun site.

    3. The hun office have a number of log ins on hun (and possibly other) forums to enable them to monitor and influence discussion and Ahmad made use of one of these.

I think number 3 is the most likely.

  18. Squire Danaher,

6 months at Dundee United under Jackie would be great for McGeough….provided they rate him and would play him. In his particular case you may be right. He may not have a long term future at Celtic as, like you, I’m not sure what his best position is.

In addition, there are a whole bunch of players from this years u-20’s that would benefit from going on loan next season…..both Twardziks (does anyone know what happened Fillip??), Atatic, Irvine, Herron, George and Chalmers. First team football has to improve them quicker than playing for the development squad!!

  19. Kayal33

You said it yourself. Forrest was mediocre that day – his balls into the box were wofeul. Hooper and Commons won the game for us. Brown had a great game also.

We were 4-3-3 that day, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see that repeated, although it would probably rule out McCourt, who’d do better in CM or behind the strikers.

Perhaps Dylan, and a couple of the others you mention, on a season long loan with Jackie at DU could be used as a sweetener when signing Russell &/or Mackay Steven ;-)

  27. Just heard Gary McAllister talking about Celtic. He mad a comment that ‘people down south’ judge Celtic on the Champions League – he’s probably right but it irked me.

This has been a theme for the entirety of my life and I have never understood why Scottish people or followers of scottish football ever cared what people ‘down south’ thought of them.

Do teams in Denmark care what the people in England think of their game? Do the French or the Dutch? The Spanish? I guess not. DO the Spanish worry about how their latin cousins in Italy rate their game or vice versa? The English and Germans don’t harp on about how they rate each others clubs in each others countries.

The whole thing displays a great insecurity in the mindset of those who worry about what English football people think about the Scottish game.
