ANGE FOR EVERTON? OH, GOOD(ISON) GRIEF!

APPARENTLY, Ange Postecoglou is on Everton’s radar as a potential managerial successor to Frank Lampard.

Don’t hold your breath, folks.

The report is coming from a so-called “in the know” reporter who has a history of being wildly off target with some of his “exclusives”.

The same journalist informed us last month that former Spurs recruitment chief Steve Hitchen was heading to Celtic to work alongside Postecoglou. The story appeared online in one newspaper before being hastily pulled because it was a work of fiction.

The link with the Hoops gaffer can be filed in the same bracket.

PARADISE…Ange Postecoglou watches Celtic beat Ross County 2-1 at Parkhead to go nine points clear at the top of the Premiership.

Coincidentally, Celtic and the Goodison Park club meet in the Hoops manager’s adopted homeland of Australia a week today in the inaugral Sydney Super Cup.

Lampard, who was out of work for a year after being sacked by Chelsea in January 2021, may be feeling the strain on Merseyside and the fans were not slow to show their displeasure yesterday when the team were booed off the pitch after a 3-0 loss to Bournemouth.

The club are now just a point above the relegation zone heading for the World Cup break.

However, there has been nothing to suggest the struggling Premier League club have plans to dismiss their manager who has not even been in charge for a full year after taking over from Rafa Benitez.

GETTING HIS COLLAR FELT…Frank Lampard faces the media after Everton’s 3-0 loss to Bournemouth.

There is no vacancy and, therefore, there is no job on offer, real or imagined, for the 57-year-old Greek-Australian who was named Parkhead gaffer in June last year.

According to the report, Postecoglou has the same agent as Lampard and “he would be well informed about the club and the salary they pay if the call comes”.

An Everton site picked up the tale, but asked if the Celtic manager could make the step up at the Goodison club.

Laughingly, they informed their readers “it may be too big a job for the Aussie”.

Postecoglou won the Premiership and League Cup in his first season in Scotland.

Everton’s last major honour was an FA Cup win in May 1995 – more than TWENTY-SEVEN YEARS ago.

PRIZE GUY…Ange Postecoglou proudly holds the League Cup which he won only six months after arriving at Celtic as Neil Lennon’s successor.

The Scottish Sun on Sunday tucked the Postecoglou/Everton link story away in three brief pars contained in 12 lines in today’s print edition, tagged on at the end of another Ange story almost as an afterthought.

If they believed there was a grain of truth in the tale, they would have had it all over their back page with an enormous cross-reference on the front. Possibly worth the newspaper’s splash if they did not have a failed politician doing something daft on I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here.

In recent months, Postecoglou has been linked with manager’s jobs at Brighton, Wolves and Southampton.

He has shown no inclination to pack up and quit. Long may that continue.
